NHL/hockey TV ratings 2024-25

i am really worried this 4 nation cup will be a big flop and will draw 0 interest in U.S.

No U.S sports shows are even talking about it, and it starts tomorrow. i've heard many MTL'ers here calling this a joke of a tournament and most not interested in this gimmick. And MTL loves its hockey. Imagine ur avg US fan?? I bet 98% of americans don't even know this exists. Tons of great players not even there. No Russians (it's like the NHL is punishing them, what a joke).. no kucherov, no panarin, no Ovi, no Vasilevsky). it's not a real tournament. it's not getting the exposure at all in US right now. Hopefully it changes

I hate the scheduling. SAT 1pm in BOS. Finland/Sweden. will boston even fill the arena for that?? No bruins in this game either. Will they even watch?? Will there be 6,433 fans at the game??? And the SAT night matchup of CAN/US, is going head to head against the NBA all star skills challenge.

I just pray this won't turn out to be a flop in the US and everyone ignores this and makes NHL look like a joke. So far, it's leaning that way, BIG TIME.
lol, you don’t care that game is on at 1 pm, as all you do in your post history is look for ways to shoot down the league.
Just read the tv ratings thread for proof of that.

1 pm is the perfect time for the 2 countries represented.

I understand that the 1pm game is to cater FIN and SWE, but who gives a crap about them. they are 4,000 miles away from us in a different country. Look at trump, we are his neighbors in CANADA and he doesn't give a crap about us. he wants to take our country. so now we care about FIN and SWE??? now ppl in BOS have to wake up early on SAT go watch 2 meaningless teams for them with no rooting interest. Who's going to dish out money for that in BOS??

Speaking of not buying tickets. I am in MTL and i live 3 min walk from Bell Centre. i just came back and the streets are deserted. There is no buzz at all. Usually for habs games, the buzz around Bell 2 hrs to puck drop is unimaginable. NOTHING for this game. There's nobody out there. In fact, 2 scalpers came up to me and offered me 2 center ice tix in the whites, not the bottom reds, but not all the way up. About 35 rows from the ice.. They told me they'd give the 2 tix for 180 for the pair. I can't even get that for a habs/ducks game on a MON night.

They are having so much trouble getting rid of them. What do u expect for this silly tournament that means nothing.

I don’t think you do understand.

Not everyone gets up at noon. Not like you’ll be watching any games anyways.
All you do is complain in the TV hockey ratings thread.

Sorry Wayne, didn't realize u r from there. It was nothing against u, it was why the NHL would care about tv viewers in Europe.
Its ok, you are free to think and feel whatever you like, i dont take it personally.
It could be money involved, i dont know how big the TV contract is in Sweden and Finland but it is probably more than one think. As I wrote in "TV contract thread" reagarding SHL league

This was a 6 year contract

it was approximately equivalant to 580 million US dollars at the time article was written, since then the swedish krona has lost much and is now 455 million.

SHL has 364 games in regular season, playoff has play in for 4 teams best of 3
and the rest QF SF and Finals best of 7, and some regulation games also

oh and the cost is 499 swedish krona per month, ca 45 dollar todays exchange rate or ca 60 dollar back in 2020, with this you also get 2nd tier Hockey and more sports, but the 2nd tier had a separate TV contract, hope i didnt went to off topic and put this in the wrong place

So it could be quite some cash for hockey in sweden, how it is in finland i dont know, except they are fanatics, espacially against swedes, they hate our guts, they used to have a Radio show named
all Swedes are gay, back in the 90s :)

I like to hear the costs in other countries, thanks

The ratings and tickets won’t be good because it’s an unestablished tournament. Very much like when the World Baseball Classic started. There was zero investment in international baseball at the major league level, and at times it showed after the USA did so poorly and people bandied about that it should only be minor leaguers, which defeated the entire purpose. With the last tournament, people were talking about it being some of the best baseball we’ve ever seen.

International hockey is much more like an investment, and it’s exactly how they see it. The only bet they can make is that the hockey delivers and the people who do watch are impressed by it.
Except the wbc tapped into the Latin and Asian diaspora in North America which is s huge reason for it success. That why they put wbc games in Miami and Arizona. How big of diaspora does Finland and Sweden still have here?

Seems fairly close to World Junior numbers. So essentially it is only reaching the hard core hockey fans.

Comp to make would seem to be the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

Here's the (English-language only) numbers for Team Canada in Canada then:

Semifinal v. Russia: 3.09M (CBC/SN/SN360)
Final G2 v. Europe: 2.27M (CBC/SN360)
Final G1 v. Europe: 2.07M (CBC/SNO)
Group v. USA: 2.05M (SN)
Group v. Europe: 1.75M (SN)
Group v. Czech Republic: 1.57M (SN)

So 1.79M for round-robin is in line with the SN-only Group games from 2016. Would beat all but v. USA, of course.

-Four Nations on TNT Wednesday-

Canada-Sweden: 1.04M (TNT/truTV)

Most-viewed hockey game on TNT Sports this season, obviously.

Oh man we could be looking at 1.5M plus for USA-Finland and potentially 2M plus for USA-Canada on ABC

I will add that if Finland-Sweden can get 1M at 1pm on Saturday, that would be a great showing for this tournament
