NFL network showed super bowl 4. But only a black and white version. Even though they have SB 3 in color.
Anyway, during game, this promo came up for the next Sunday.

It's hockey-related, but only between the end of June and the end of September.

Baltimore-ish
January 1, 1954 -- color tvs cost the equivalent of a car, in 2018 dollar terms it would cost a family $11,878.03

January 1, 1967 - 17.3% of households had a color tv

January 1, 1971 - half the households had a color tv

Not to mention the Battle of Bogside from August 12 to the 14, 1969, which some say decided once and for all who held sway over the airways.

Pretty cool that they played a whole football game just to give the NHL a platform for this ad.
I find it interesting that it was a major station/national broadcasted game. Not just a local station.
But obviously they were pushing expansion with the Kings being new

What's Bogside ?

Why is Super bowl 4 in Black and white and super bowl 3 in color?
It's simply the broadcast they chose. Probably couldn't find a color one they were happy with

CBS erased the videotape shortly afterwards (as they did for Super Bowls 1 and 2) so the only surviving copy is from Canada CBC and French version on Radio Canada. Videotape was expensive so they transferred it to a kinescope . Most of the game does exist in color..discovered in 2023 except for some of the 4th quarter.

Vikings had some fans in Canada and their coach Bud Grant was a head coach in the CFL for a number of years.

I imagine Super Bowl III exists, or most of it except for some of the 4th quarter, in color because the AFL Jets beating the NFL Colts was seen as this great historic upset. Of course the following year the Chiefs were a big underdog and won, but hey, they play in Kansas City.

The Vikings were a 13.5 favorite and lost 23-7. I completely understand the pain of Vikings fans young and old.

IMO the13.5 line was the worst in Super Bowl history. The Jets had won in 1968, proving the AFL was legit. By 1969, the talent of the top teams in the AFL (Raiders, Jets, Chiefs) was pretty close to equal to the top of the NFL. KC had 6 hall of fame defenders AND a hall of fame QB. The Chiefs beating the Vikings in 1969 (in dominating fashion too) isn't considered to be an all time upset, just a terrible betting line.

Does anyone know, was this broadcast from the US or Canada? If if was the Canadian broadcast, it makes a lot more sense advertising the NHL the next week.

CBS had the American broadcast for Super Bowl IV and also had the NHL broadcast rights that year.

And it looks like they started their national coverage earlier in January (Kings/Wings is listed under 1969-70 here):

Lol the betting line wasn't terrible. It did exactly what it was supposed to do. Fool the public.
Th betting line means they knew KC was the better team and played on the sheep's bias.

A Superbowl promo probably only cost a nickel back then
It likely didn't cost anything. CBS broadcast Super Bowl IV and they were the US NHL broadcaster at the time. So, it ws just a network putting in a quick plug for their upcoming programming.
