Just how much money are you assuming the average per player amount to go up?

Spending $7m on Callahan in a salary cap world borders on insanity. IMO, off course.

I doubt anyone will straight up offer Callahan $7M. If there are a few teams that want him, the price will go up, deservingly.

Given his age, Moulson might be more likely to take a 4 year contract, which I'd stomach a lot more than giving Cally 6+ years.

Regardless, really not interested in either for more than say 5.3 regardless of length.

I would do Moulson for $5.3 x 4 years no problem. Much easier to work with than Cally's demands

For what it's worth, he grew up a Sabres fan. What could be more thrilling than leading your childhood team to a Stanley Cup?

Callahan is pushing 30 and the Sabres are on the verge of being the worst team in hockey. Hardly a likely scenario.

Neither is worth what they are asking. If i had to pick it would be cally. yes getting the puck in the net is important since thats the only thing Hank cant do for us, but cally has a lot more going on for him then getting a puck in the net, which he still does does.

Don't overspend on anyone this offseason. Resign Boyle, Pouliot, Moore, Stralman. 4th line should be an energy, defensively stable line that can chip in the occasional goal and preferrably penalty kill. For me, Boyle-Moore-Dorsett/Carcillo/Hrivik fits that mold. 3rd line could be a younger line the likes of Hagelin-Miller-Fast. Brass slots in the second with Taco/Zucc on the wings and then you have Kreider-Stepan-Nash. Not the best lineup ever, but I think it keeps you competitive without blowing money. Keep the D at McD-G-Staal-Stral-Klein/Moore/McI/Allen.

I understand where you are coming from with this, but the idea is win the cup. Maybe if Kreider took a huge leap into Elite...but realistically that team gets eaten up in the playoffs.

Somehow , someway you have to have at least 2 elite forwards to get to the cup.... imo

And I think there is a way to get there...with some tweaking

I completely agree that we need more high end talent. I just don't see it available right now. I have no interest in paying $6-7 Mill per for Cally/Moulson and really don't have much in giving Vanek $8. I don't think he's the game changer we need. I have no issue spending Dolan's money, but I want to do it right. Resign Danny and Stralman and we have a solid top 4 with a bottom pair that can be a combination of players with different skill sets. I just don't know how we're going to acquire that second top forward, unless, as you pointed out, Kreider takes a huge step forward or a kid can come in and tear it up.

The Sabres need a lot more than a minor tweak. Callahan could be a good acquisition for them as they cut loose/trade some of what they have. They will need some veteran presence, and let's face it, Callahan is viewed as that around the league.

I wouldn't want either. In the world of the rising cap Moulson is a 6M player, and I suppose Callahan is a 5.5M player, though both will likely get over 6M. I wouldn't want Cally at 6M and I wouldn't want Moulson at over 5M. He's such a one dimensional player and he doesn't really create his own offense. He has a specific sweet area in the offensive zone and he basically doesn't exist outside of it. One of my least favorite big scorers in the league these past few years. I'd be all in favor of a 6M forward signing this summer (assuming Richie is bought out) but not on either of these two.

Can just try and pay 2 million more and get Vanek instead.

Agree with this.
Vanek for $7.5 is preferable to Callahan for $6.75m, Moulson for $6m, or even Stastny for $7m IMO.
Vanek is a proven goal scorer. He scores goals around the net..underrated passer.

If it's my money I might pass on all four, but if I had to pick one player and was looking only at annual value, it would be Vanek.
