Need to look at more under the radar signing. Moore and Poulton have worked great this year. I'd find the cost of setoguchi. Right wing. A lot of talent. Size and speed. If Callahan is not retained, he can slide on the 3rd line wing. Find someone who can play there. We do have some y I une guys knocking at the door. Miller, fast, or Kristo could make the team.

Setoguchi is like 5'10?

Cally at 6 is crippling. As captain of a team... that's unreal.

The distinction needs to be made to him that he's either getting 6-7 years @ 6-6.5 per from a bottom feeder, or he's taking less length and cap hit for a contender in a better city.

He's entitled to get the most money he will from wherever else he may be looking... but that's the trade-off he needs to distinguish. Last I checked 30 million is a hell of a lot of money. What we're offering is not a slap in the face.

If he wants mediocrity, frustration, and potentially even resentment from the fans of the team he signs for... he'll cripple whoever gives him that contract and take the highest bid.

If he wants to earn the "C"... he'll put the team over himself. 30 million sets you up for life if you manage it even remotely responsibly.

I'm not convinced that Callahan would be a bad fit in a Buffalo or an Edmonton if he wants to chase the money. In 2019, maybe. But now? If I was a fan of a team like that I'd be screaming for a Callahan, who provides so many of the things that those kinds of teams are missing. The gap exists, but this is still a league of parity - look at Colorado.

If Callahan signs with Buffalo I'll lose much respect for him. Even though he's from Rochester. It's not exactly the suburbs. He'd be condemning himself to finish last or close to it for what could only be considered a modest raise from whoever the second highest bidder will be.

The players will use that same lame argument to justify their demands "but teh cap iz goin up doe"... yeah that doesn't mean GM's want to piss away crucial cap space to overpay you... Unless you're Toronto.

For what it's worth, he grew up a Sabres fan. What could be more thrilling than leading your childhood team to a Stanley Cup?

That's pretty silly. For signing with a bad team? So what? They could draft McDavid next year, fast forward a bit and they're probably better than the Rangers. How would you feel if he signed with the Penguins? Haha.

I'd just re-sign Callahan. I wanted him traded, but I think we're all living in the past if we don't think Callahan should get nearly as much as he will. Salaries are going up because the cap is going up. Maybe $7M is too high, but he probably deserves around $6M, maybe even $7M if a bidding war ensues with him going to free agency.

That about sums it up plain & simple.

IMO. He's being stubborn on the terms given he played "good soldier" in previous RFA deals whereas Staal, Dubi, MDZ played the game. Maybe in his mind that should bear some consideration on Glens part.

I don't want either at that price. In order of preference:

1) No major UFA signings this offseason. Re-sign the RFAs, amnesty Richards, and fill from within using our own kids, players returned from the pending deadline deal(s) and any offseason trades that occur.

2) Everything in the first post plus sign Stastny.
3) Everything in the first post plus sign Vanek.
4) Everything in the first post plus sign Callahan.

- Five other options I haven't thought of. -

10) Everything in the first post plus sign Moulson.

Realistcally I don't think it's possible to sign ALL of these guys...

If Richards is bought out, you would HAVE to sign Stastny, which means we have to throw $7M at him in order to get him to sign...

Vanek is going to want $7M as well...

If we assume Moulson wants $6M, we would have to assume his production is somewhere in the average between his time on NYI and is time on BUF.
If you do he comes out to be a 25 goal scorer
(average of his 36 goals in 11-12 and prorated average of this season in BUF of 18-20 goals over 82 games)

We're in the same boat as Callahan if we sign Moulson, minus the possible chemistry and a loss of intangibles... We'd be better off spending for Vanek instead

Sorry, each of those should have read "everything in the first POINT," not post. My bad.

And the list was a selection of alternative options, in order of preference. (That much I thought was clear, previous typo aside?)

If I had to choose one, it'd be Callahan.

Its amazing how players like Moulson, who latch themselves onto the coattails of one of the best centers in the league, continue to get handed big contracts.

I'm not advocating for Moulson to be signed, but this sounds oddly similar to what a lot of posters here said about PAP...yet he went to the Avs last season and in 48 games posted a line of 18-25-43...

Not exactly. The big problem with Callahan on this team is that he's the 3rd best RW. Moulson is a LW, and would either be the best or 2nd best on the team.

Moulson probably isn't the 30+ goal scorer he was when playing with Tavares, but I would be surprised if he wasn't a mid-to-upper 20s guy on a competent team. He scores goals from garbage areas. The real issue I have is his age combined with the requirement of a long-term deal (I'm sure). If we could get him for a medium term, like 4 or 5, then I might be on board.

The main reason I wanted to get Moulson earlier was to help our horrible power play. That doesn't seem to be an issue any more.

If Cally gets you 25 goals, Moulson will get you 30.

Except Cally bring a ton more than Moulson ever could to make up for that 5 goal difference, and I like Moulson and think he fits a need on this team.

Moulson isn't a great skater, nor does he PK, Hit, or Block shots. There is also the leadership factor, as well as jersey sales from an organizational standpoint.

Cally v. Moulson?

Cally every single time.

Saw Setoguchi often when he played for the Sharks. If somebody could get him to take his fitness responsibilities seriously he could be a pretty good player. I wonder what kind of offers he'll get. I'd be surprised if the aav is >4m. Pretty risky even that is.

He won't be in the league for long. Fitness and effort concerns for a pro athlete with over 5 years of experience?

He'll get a 1 yr show me contract from a bottom feeder. Guy is a loser.

Come on now. Toews and Kane do not make $7. Neither does Kessel. Heck, Lucic makes $6, while Chara (rounded) makes 7. Simmonds and Giroux do not make that.

I am not going through every team in the league, but to say that he might derved $7is putting him into some rather elite company. Frankly, so too does $6.

When did those players sign their contracts? What was the salary cap those years? How many of them hit free agency?

Moulson isn't handsome enough to be a Ranger. :sarcasm:

Seriously though, hell no to Moulson @ $6M...that's absurd. Especially when we don't have a center in the same stratosphere as JT.

Just how much money are you assuming the average per player amount to go up?

Spending $7m on Callahan in a salary cap world borders on insanity. IMO, off course.
