Interesting, these guys are rumored to be asking similar deals. If you have to spend 6 mill who would you want to invest in?

We all know Callys intangibles, but Moulson is a more potent offensive player.

I still lean towards... we have invested the lion share to Lundqvist so the plan should be to GET HIM A TWO GOAL LEAD

If I had to choose one, it'd be Callahan.

Its amazing how players like Moulson, who latch themselves onto the coattails of one of the best centers in the league, continue to get handed big contracts.

I can certainly see the benefits of investing in a more offensive threat with the 6 mill.

Intangibles, heart and soul etc, are all very important. And as we've seen with players like Kovalchuck, offensive skill alone is not the whole package either.

What I do see is the investment in Lundqvist as seeing him as the backbone of the team. That his skill is to be trusted and built upon. So yes a good defense is key but unlike the shotblocking Torts system , AV favors a lets get Henrik a lead.

If you give Lundqvist a 2 goal lead, and he's on his game. You are going to win the majority of the time.

Yes that's a concern. Is he really all that? Would he thrive in our top 6 over the next 5 years?

Is he truly a top line winger capable of 30+ goals every year?

Ironically he's injured now, but traditionally he's been much healthier than Cally. But that's also part of the way each plays his game and his role on the team.

He has 9 goals in 40 games in Buffalo. Gives you an idea of his production without a generational center.

I'd just re-sign Callahan. I wanted him traded, but I think we're all living in the past if we don't think Callahan should get nearly as much as he will. Salaries are going up because the cap is going up. Maybe $7M is too high, but he probably deserves around $6M, maybe even $7M if a bidding war ensues with him going to free agency.

Can just try and pay 2 million more and get Vanek instead.

Even if thats a ******** of dollars I would rather pay Vanek 8 than give 6 to Cally and definitely to Moulson.

I would probably be cool with 6x5 to Callahan though.

Moulson won't be a 30 goal guy without a star center. That said, his Buffalo production is unfair to judge him by as well. The team barely gets puck control in the offensive zone. Moulson is a finisher, not a dynamic game breaker.

NYR can go into next year with Kreider, Hagelin, Pouliot, and Carcillo as the LW's. Sign Carey and groom him in the minors. These guys are going to get massive deals.

Maybe take Heatley on a cheap one year deal to see if he can revive his career.

I don't want either at that price. In order of preference:

1) No major UFA signings this offseason. Re-sign the RFAs, amnesty Richards, and fill from within using our own kids, players returned from the pending deadline deal(s) and any offseason trades that occur.

2) Everything in the first post plus sign Stastny.
3) Everything in the first post plus sign Vanek.

4) Everything in the first post plus sign Callahan.

- Five other options I haven't thought of. -

10) Everything in the first post plus sign Moulson.

If we can avoid giving either of those players $6-7mil deals, that would be fantastic.

You want to throw $6-7mil at someone this off-season? Throw it at Vanek.

I would be fine with giving Callahan $6M for a three year deal. My problem with signing Cally isn´t the money he want but the length he want. I fear the fans will have the same feeling about Cally in the middle of the contract as they did Drury. That´s bad for someone wearing the C. No way he is a $6-7M player in year four of seven in a new deal. He will be beat up as ****.

How about Jagr at 3.5 mill and we call it a day? Have him retire with us. 1 more left in the tank, use it.

Jagr at 1 year...

But Cally asking 7 year deal is a deal breaker for me. Maybe the market says he's worth 6.5 mill so be it, but the guy gets hurt an awful lot.

Injury prone players just deteriorate over time.

Moulson is young and a proven scorer. Than again so is Vanek. I'm just weighing the best use of the cap hit.

Cally below 5 mill sounds like an easy sign. But at North of 6 Mill I wonder if the team would just be better off with a 1st line sniper.

Even typing that made laugh

Cally at 6 is crippling. As captain of a team... that's unreal.

The distinction needs to be made to him that he's either getting 6-7 years @ 6-6.5 per from a bottom feeder, or he's taking less length and cap hit for a contender in a better city.

He's entitled to get the most money he will from wherever else he may be looking... but that's the trade-off he needs to distinguish. Last I checked 30 million is a hell of a lot of money. What we're offering is not a slap in the face.

If he wants mediocrity, frustration, and potentially even resentment from the fans of the team he signs for... he'll cripple whoever gives him that contract and take the highest bid.

If he wants to earn the "C"... he'll put the team over himself. 30 million sets you up for life if you manage it even remotely responsibly.

Need to look at more under the radar signing. Moore and Poulton have worked great this year. I'd find the cost of setoguchi. Right wing. A lot of talent. Size and speed. If Callahan is not retained, he can slide on the 3rd line wing. Find someone who can play there. We do have some y I une guys knocking at the door. Miller, fast, or Kristo could make the team.
