Dupuis just re-signed with PIT, which makes Iginla likely expendable. I still say take a run at throwing some jack his way, just to see what happens.

Money isn't what will attract Iginla, unfortunately ... he'll sign with someone that he thinks will give him a shot at the Cup. For us, that means we're not even on his short list.

That worked out so well for him in Pittsburgh. :sarcasm:

I doubt we will be willing to spend crazy money or offer crazy years to any free agent.

I'd guess we'll get our players through trades when the over the cap teams need to come to Earth.

Another year hoping #19 can start throwing up some numbers in lieu of signing a big name.

Not that I am necessarily complaining about that.

Just looking at some Foligno stats. His shot total was approximately 1/2 of his total from Ottawa. His scoring % was about the same, slightly lower. Last three yrs below 10. Double his shots and he is at 12 goals. Don't see him as a solid or even borderline 2nd liner.

Got to get someone to fill that slot.

1) Using league-wide parameters as a benchmark, we have a lot of players who are capable of second-line level offence. We don't have a second-line hole, we have a top-line hole, don't forget.

2) We haven't been using a typical two-scoring lines with a checking line and an energy line system. So I don't know if there is even a second line to discuss.

3) No one's calling Foligno a goal scorer. And I'm not sure where you're going with his shot stats in a shortened season.

4) I see Foligno as a very useful player in a lot of roles, including as a complement to shooters. His 47 points in 11-12 (easily second-line level) is just one piece of evidence for that.

This is a loser attitude.

Meh, im kind of glad he wouldn't come here. Maybe Iginla of old, but lets face it hes not the same. What would he be able to bring we don't already have. Yes he has some experience we don't have and he use to be a shining star, but he's not anymore. I truly don't think we need to makes any real moves. If we can snag someone like Clarkson for a reasonable price I would say lets do it. Give the kids a few years to develop and crack a spot on the roster. I don't want us to start signing older players for "vet help". We need to give our younger kids (Murray, Atkinson, Calvert, Johansen, Prout, Erixon, Jenner) all the ice time they can take this season. I think most with the exception of Jenner, Prout and maybe Erixon really could take every minute thrown their way and not see their game falter. Erixon was being sheltered hardcore last season and Prout emerged pretty well and I hope he can continue to develop and grow into a force on the line, but I wont be convinced until I see it on the ice all season. But I feel Murray, Cam, Matty, and Joey are all ready to take the next step.

I know a lot of people feel Murray isn't ready, but how many of you have been in the doctors office with him? In the meetings with the coaches and medical staff? In the locker room with the training staff? I mean the kid has been skating almost the entire time he was injured. There was a period in the beginning where he couldn't do anything, and since that point he has been doing nothing but conditioning and strengthening. On top of being NHL ready LAST season. Yes it takes time to be game ready, but he has an entire offseason to get into game shape. Between development camp, training camp, and preseason(yes we have a FULL preseason this year) he should be more than NHL ready. . Just my .02 though, I fully expect to see Murray in Union Blue for more than just a "tryout" phase in the big leagues. I would be really shocked to see him play more than 5-10 games in the AHL.

Yup, if Jarmo wanted him but didn't bother then he wouldn't be doing his job. We had no chance on Justin Schultz but Howson still phoned his agent and made an offer. (I think Howson made the comment of not doing his job if he didn't attempt to sign him)

Unless you've been in the doctor's office with him, I don't see how you can make this argument.

Moreover, there's a lot more to being NHL ready, than just being in game shape. Murray has never played in a professional game; he's never played against men, and he hasn't played a hockey game in nearly a year. I'm not sure how you can somehow decipher whether or not he's ready to take the next step, when he barely played last year.

I think people tend to want to rush prospects to see "the next new thing." I constantly argued that Johansen shouldn't have been brought up when he was, and he probably should have. Defensemen generally take longer to develop. Being the "most ready" prospect in a weak draft doesn't mean anything to me, really, especially a year and season-ending shoulder injury later.

Unless there's some sort of trade, Murray should likely start in the AHL playing pairing minutes. We have the defensive depth to actually develop him. Let him play where Larson isn't afraid of scratching or benching players who aren't working their tail off, and where Springfield has had some success lately. This is where the development of the hard work culture starts. Nikitin's contract ends next year, which opens a spot for him in the top-six. Prout and Erixon have less than a season of experience in the NHL level, adding Murray would make half of our defense extremely inexperienced. It irks me when posters are inking him into the top four when he's not only not played in the AHL at all, but barely played last year.

Iginla is a mercenary who would not fit in with the "hard working" "team first" mentality JD and JK are trying to build. He would be coming here for one year to win and leave. Seems totally at odds with what this management group is trying to build. I don't think they will even give him a sniff.

Wasn't that always thought to be the plan. The FA market was thought to be weak from the beginning. And unfortunately, the dominoes have to continue to fall, before those cap tight situations will present themselves.

And if nothing reasonable presents itself, then they go with what they've got. And that's not a bad option either. The team is miles ahead of where everyone thought they would be, another season to let the mix continue to come together and it's entirely possible we will find we've got a pretty good hockey team here.

...how in the world did a guy who absolutely refused to leave the declining Flames until the bitter, bitter end suddenly become a "mercenary"?

I don't think it likely he'll come here either, but this is a tad silly.

If the CBJ are looking at the FA market, any thoughts on Clark MacArthur.

Might be able to sign at a reasonable rate and terms, gets 20+ goals on a regular basis. not particularly gritty but that's not our need. Not a wow, flashy signing but might work as a productive bridge guy, to allow the prospect pool to mature.

My prediction is that Filppula to Columbus rumors start flying soon as "experts" just write those as if Jarmo probably tries to lure every player from his past to CBJ uniform :D

So what is Gabby doing here?
At least Iginla can play physical hockey. Also Gabby has moved to more teams than Iginla.

Bottom line this team needs scoring and Iginla could help. Like others I don't think he would ever come here, he wants to hoist the cup and there are better opportunities (it would appear) than Columbus in 2013-14. We should be a good team, but not a cup favorite lookking for one final peice.

Given Philly's cap issues, is there anyone we'd be able to/want to try to pry from their roster?

Wayne Simmonds and Matt Read are two guys I'd sure be interested in. Haven't read any rumors about availability, but Philly clearly has to do something.

Simmons would be the guy IMO. But I'd guess Flyers would start by trying to move Coburn and/or Meszaros. Possibly even Hartnell.

I doubt we will try, never mind attract him even if we do. Having said that, but I'll take this "not the same" Iginla in a heartbeat. He still produces.

I love this "not the same" stuff. He's still easily a top 20 RW in this league, which puts in on the top line on most teams in this league.

Any time a player gets to be around 30 around CBJ fan land he becomes "not the same". While in a lot of cases it's true to an extent, it's meaningless when you look at the big picture.

Maybe, however looking at the FA list there is a good reason to think the CBJ would push hard for him and it has little to do with his or our GM's nationality. He should be in the 2nd tier behind Horton.

Not endorsing the deal, just saying if we can't make a trade today we'll could very well look at FA and that's one of only a tiny handful of players that come close to addressing our needs.

If it was me, I might look at Mason Raymond.
