So this indicates the Wolves want an 08 in the deal

When that time comes, there will be two NTCs to deal with and possibly a reluctance of a team on Musty’s list to trade their ‘08-1st. Any kid or agent that had reservations about Sudbury and Papineau have more now.

But again, that's the GM's hang up. You can't tell me there isn't a deal out there, even with a short list, that revolves around 2 07's that isn't as good as 1 08. Also if I'm another GM, I'm cutting waaaaay down on the picks offered if Sudbury is so hung up on getting an 08. They just advertised that an 08 is the limiting factor.
That requires a team offering that.

And Sudbury is going to have to hope an 08 waives their NTC.
Ok and? If it's suggested that there are 3 teams then there are 3 possible 08s to look at either they do or they don't then you move from there. You don't say oh they may so no so let's give him away. BTW Dario himself said he ain't giving the player away for nothing.

A team looking to acquire Musty this year, will be a team looking to go all in this year. Perhaps the 2x07’s you would say would be fair return would be too big a part of this year’s team. Trading the 2x07’a might leave too big a hole in their depth? But moving their 08 1st might not affect this year’s team near as much.

We've all been patient with the Molnar news, almost there folks.

Musty and Molnar forming a new line combo would be exciting to see. Not sure who you put with them, maybe Villeneuve.

This whole situation has been a mess, how was management not able to find a dance partner over 3 weeks. The chances that there will be better value at the deadline is a gamble, what happens if there is an injury to Musty?

What if other contenders drop off and other prospects become available, a la Jett Luchanko?

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
*Yawn*. So sad that your team couldn't land him in a trade. Tough break, hopefully you can get over it.

I’m not losing sleep over it, it will be great for the league to have him back and playing regardless of the team.

I have a strange feeling that my team might just be okay without him!

Big difference between nothing and what you want.
There might be no real chance of getting Wassylin, Vaughn, Zurawski, Hawery, …or even Smith whose family moved to the Oshawa area.

I think people are making more of this than it actually is.

Clearly Sudbury tried to move him but they couldn’t find the right package.

I have been a proponent of teams waiting deeper into the season to see how the existing team performs. It allows the GM to put the emphasis on the existing players to prove augmenting the existing team is meaningful. Teams shouldn’t be relying on adding players to get competitive. They should already be competitive and then add to maintain their competitiveness or put them over the top dominant.

The issue is there are multiple potential players out there and a bunch of teams that have not determined if they want to make the big investment. If you were to GM of Erie, would you make a move for Musty now because he’s the one available? Or, would you wait until Jan. 1, get a stronger sense of who is actually available and make your selection based on that? It also frees them up to dangle Challenger. I mean, if Jett Luchanko is available as a two year player and you are Staios and have a two year Championship window, would you acquire Musty or Luchanko? I’d take Luchanko for a two year run. If I were Richmond, I Amy do the same since they could be really good again next year.

I think this is a situation where the opposition GM’s need to see how the market unfolds before they decide which players they will target and prioritize.

Additionally, waiting until Jan 1 allows for the ‘08s to be freed up for deals.

Also, if Musty is going to Team USA, he likely will only need to play in a Wolves Uniform for a little over a month. Then he joins Team USA for the WJHC. He plays 5 weeks and is gone for another 4-5 weeks with Team USA. So, not a big deal.

What will the players think? Who cares? It is a “hired gun” for around 5 weeks that will help them win games. He will be treated like a hired gun. He likely will have a few really close friends that he hangs out with and that won’t change. As long as he comes in with the attitude that he is going to work hard and expend the appropriate level of effort, the players will respect that. If he sulks and dogs it then that’s a different story but the internal competitiveness of players at that level usually takes over and guides them. I don’t think we will see any real issues.

Challenger

Maybe. Maybe Butler thinks Challenger is more useful by January than ‘07 wingers. Maybe Challenger has no interest in the wolves. Maybe Musty decided if does not get what he wants, the wolves will get nothing in return.

And it's usually somewhere in between, with Barlow doubt Oshawa is in, plus the thought is he wants to go home, so Challenger would be the likely 08. Question no one knows is what were the offers were. Some have suggested really low so you wait for a better deal.

That would be a nice line

I don’t think it is clear at all that Sudbury really tried to move Musty.

Well what were the offers then since you say they didn't try. Not that they are required to. As they said they would accept a trade that made the team better until then he is welcome back to the team.

I think the point @dirty12 is making isn’t so much that they didn’t try at all. The point is whether they made appropriate levels of effort to resolve the situation. That may include accepting somewhat of a lessor trade return in an effort to come to a final resolution.

In some cases, the demand isn’t necessarily a specific player. It can be a specific type of package. It may require a player and none of the teams interested are able to free up a player that makes sense. However, on January 1, a cohort of players will be freed up. So, how I take @dirty12 in this regard is that Sudbury may very well have scanned the market interest and understood they weren’t’ going to get the return they needed and instead of choosing to be flexible, they chose to be selective and by doing so, it effectively means they really didn’t make a solid effort to move the player.

However, IMO, that wouldn’t constitute not trying. IMO, not trying would mean they had no intention of trading the player at all and they fully intend ont he player playing the remainder of the year in Sudbury. At least that is the context I was posting with.

Surely how this was all handled will have 08s lining up to waive their no trade clause to Sudbury at the deadline.

I would look at it as Sudbury holding out trading Musty specifically to get me which they couldn’t earlier. That is the angle that it should be looked at. “I don’t want the sub-par player. I wanted you. And I held out to January 1st, took all the heat specifically so I could acquire you because I think you are the player that will help lead our franchise.”

My question is who looks better to players, Owen Sound who expedited moving Barlow and got it done, or Sudbury?

Barlow was known all off season. Musty no one knew until after he was sent back. If the wolves had been offered what Oshawa did or the 3 way for Bertucci (who also requested a trade from reports out of Flint) the deal would be done. I'm sorry but would you accept a 4th liner and 3rd pair with 2 picks for Musty a Top 5 player in the league?

So we know this is what was offered? News to me.

Also I'm confused, is Musty a top 5 player in the league, or a net negative to this team? Seems to be two very different opinions going on in this thread to if he's a good hockey player or not.

I'm all about getting the best value, but can't help but feel this is now just a distraction that will continue to hang over the team until January.

No but it seems like people are suggesting that the wolve should have taken the first offer made and because they didn't they are a bad organization so I put a bs offer that would never be accepted.

The fact that Dario said to fans he isn't giving him away says the offers haven't been good

Musty is a Top 5 point producer in the league and had the best points per game in the league last year. Where he lacks is defence, which is what San Jose wants him to work on and what our coaching staff has been working on with the team.

It's a distraction created by him not the team. The team made him an assistant captain and was ready for him to come back before Marek announced he wasn't returning.
