The Oilers allow the fewest high danger chances and are playing great defense...and his save percentage is sub .900. Skinner is an AHL goalie cosplaying as an NHL starter. Play Picard and don't look back.
If the Oilers had a Price-like goalie for what they pay Nurse....cup for sure....we saw a few years ago how a goalie can get you very far....

I don't want to get rid of him. He is relatively cheap and outperforming his cap hit (in the regular season).

The problem is that Holland decided to roll the dice on a cheap backup/1B to start 20+ games in the playoffs after already seeing him incapable of that once already.

You don't roll the dice on your goalie with where the Oilers are as an organisation. Kind of baffling Holland wouldn't want to maximise this in his last year, standing pat both on D and in goal despite obvious holes.

Doubt this arrogant clown will accept being a backup on this team, and that’s what he has to be (at least until he actually earns a starter spot). Holland needed to get goaltending insurance, I agree. Not sure how he got fooled by this fraud, maybe the hot streak during the winning streak.

Step #1 is the new GM firing Schwartz into the sun and getting a real goalie coach. Every starter since Smith going and getting outside help is a massive indictment

Amazing that you shit on Bouchard for everything but Skinner gets a free pass.
This is completely different.

I'm saying Bouchard isn't elite. (comparing to other top defensemen)

I'm saying Skinner played ok and basically played to what he is. (he's a top 20/25 ish goalie)

It's Holland's fault we have a poor starting goalie. Skinner played a decent game for what he is.

Not my fault Skinner still sucks and will always suck.

You can’t be a starting goaltender and not be able to do the splits. His puck tracking and reaction time and movement are not NHL material.

It’s not going to change, he’s not a athlete
Seems like he can't handle a huge workload either.

Yeah, I think this is getting exposed big time. He's a big guy, but not remotely athletic. The other high-end goalies at his size don't have the mobility limitations.

This most basic of points seems to escape his few defenders.

I'd encourage anybody to take a look at how Tretiak revolutionized goaltending and the specific types and amount of training he had to do, to do that.

To be the best possible goalie you can be athleticism, stretching, conditioning, strength, speed is paramount.

Skinner reminds me of the type of Gump Worsely goalie that was found acceptable before any such revolution in goaltending occurred. Like a throwback you never want to see again.

Goalies flopping around throwing themselves at pucks because they can't skate worth a shit and have no mobility is the stuff you expected not to see long after NHL original expansion.

Please be trolling.

You don't think Skinner is a top 25 goalie?
I dont. He’s a backup on any contender. Modern day Dan Cloutier, basically. .887 career in playoffs speaks for itself.

Another terrible start to the game too by a terrible goalie who seems to get infinite runway, defenders and excuses. He makes one good save and lets in 20% of the shots he faces and people are praising him. Dude is the Mitch Marner of goaltending.

Any success they have is in spite of him, not because of him.

I couldn't have replied any better.

He needs to start a cult. Clearly he's found a way to get followers and supporters without warranting a fraction of a fraction of that support. We have swarms of Skinner stans on this board who will crap on Bouchard, McDavid, and anyone else before they blame Skinner for anything.

Koskinen, Smith, and Talbot were all better than him by a mile and were eviscerated by the media, yet almost every "hockey analyst" supports him continuing to play, and Sportsnet is isolating two games at a time to hide his overall numbers, that when adjusted, might make him the worst playoff starter in NHL history since they started tracking save percentage.

It's beyond baffling. Why is someone so bad at his job being defended at every turn as if he has the worst luck of anyone to ever play the game of hockey in the NHL?

Honestly, I'm starting to feel like Frank Grimes...

I don't think Koskinen belongs there.

I think him and Skinner are very similar and Kosko would have struggled in the playoffs too, we just never got to see him there.

Koskinen playoffs:

7
3
1
4
--
0
157
3.42
.892

How was Skinner after 7 games?
I mean those numbers aren't good and the sample size is tiny.

Give Koskinen two full playoffs at least two rounds deep and he probably has numbers similar to Stu.

Just looks weird putting him together with Smith and Talbot even if they also were up and down for us.

Oh the burden you carry.

There are few outright Skinner champions here and I’d like to see the poster who never ever says skinner was at fault. There are some, and at times that includes me who look at certain goals and say wait a minute, player x really screwed that one up in a bad way. It’s a team sport and there is some connection between goalie performance and the team and vice versa.

Conversely there are certain posters who won’t concede a single thing on a single goal and will say it was the goalies fault no matter what.

So the only real thing we can all agree on is I would hope this - the oilers are 2 games away from being in the Stanley cup finals. The closest they have been since 2006. Perhaps it’s in spite of Skinner, but he’s on the team and they will either advance together or get eliminated together.

Why don't you hang around the game day threads and see how quickly people defend him?

I’m there off and on, it’s honestly one of the worst places we have for good discussion and dialogue. We are all trying to get a quick take in, everything is happening so fast, there is lots of emotion and we don’t have much perspective. I know I’m guilty of being part of that frenzy at times.

I know though that when I do look at goals I tend to look at them from the unit on the ice and what happened upstream to create the conditions for the scoring chance. I think it comes from being a goalie dad (actually I’m sure it does) and wanting to make sure the situations are looked at from that viewpoint. It’s not that I don’t want a save form skinner in some of these situations but I accept in most nights we are likely to have the second best goalie in the ice. But I also know we are likely to have the best powerplay., so there are pluses and minuses every night.

In the end I don’t think there are absolutes here, skinner can be better in some areas, but so can the team in many ways. Both are often true at the same time.

I know the 4th goal is a flashpoint for many in game 3 and I get why, I don’t love that goal. But if Mcdavid scores that everyone talks about how creative he is and his vision. Sometimes nhl shooters do really good things. Let’s take the Dallas first goal the other night, lots will blame skinner, I’d like that save too. But a good shooter got to a good spot. Later in the game Drai scores on ottenger and we talk about how great Drai is, if skinner lets that in the dialogue is different I suspect.
