I thought Skjei and Gardiner had good games. They both bring a bit of offense, but I like the physical edge that Skjei plays with more on the 2nd line than I would having that on the 3rd. And I don't much worry about the occasional brain fart because with either Fleury, but especially Pesce, as the other half of the pair, we have someone available to cover those mistakes.

Necas really needs to be stronger on his skates. He flops way, way too much, and at least one time last night, it cost us a breakaway chance with one of our better scorers.

If Nino is having a good season again, it really does give us a lot of options on how we can roll lines 2-4 going forward. A good problem for us to have, which will be difficult for our opponents to plan for every night.
I ACTUALLY DON'T THINK HE FLOPS, HE'S JUST... IMBALANCED.

How about?
NAT
Svech-Trocheck-Fast
Dzingel-Staal-Necas
Foegs-Marty/Geekie-McGinn

I have always thought Dzingel and Necas have a good chemistry and both anticipate the other. They were on the ice together some in the 3rd and they had 1 really good chance that Necas didnt get (unfortunately) and a few other good plays. Is it just my wild eyes seeing that? If Necas is going to be with Staal, we need a 2nd scoring threat on the line.

To be clear, its one game I am not advocating for any changes at this point. I have worked up in my head that Necasnichov would be something special so, they looked disappointing together.

edit: are you in my head @Crazydounut ?

I have trouble imaging Staal playing the tough defensive matchups with Dzingel on the ice. Dzingel looked better and was an offensive threat, but I'm not there yet.

If you need a defensively responsible actual offensive threat with Staal, the best option is probably Teuvo. But that breaks up the top line in a way no one will go for.

Rod’s nose: “Good luck mask.”
I made much the same comment last night.

Some original thoughts:
  1. Someone mentioned that Fast was invisible, but that's true of the entirety of the Trocheck line.
  2. The 4th line was fine, but they would've generated a goal with Geekie in the lineup.
  3. Skjei's contract is now my #1 most disliked, and that's notable with the under-performers this team has.
  4. I was hoping Necas would appear more confident. It's not that it stops him from being creative or scared to make a mistake, but he seems to lack an inner calm to his game.
  5. bleedgreen is out to lunch with his assessment of TT's defensive play.

I dont think our goal is to have Staal play only tough defensive assignments.

I didn’t take much out of that game other than that the Canes are a far superior team than the one the played and who they will play 7 more times. That’s great and a position they haven’t been in for a long long time.

Need to see them against at least the BJs or Nashville before figuring out what this team is really capable of.

we had a very Peters-esque game last night. Thankfully, it didnt end like too many Peters' era games.

Last night's game showed what Peters was trying to accomplish with a much less talented group. What was so frustrating back then was that inevitably we were the worse team in the matchup, so that early 1-0 lead went the other way more often than not. I don't miss watching games like that.

Detroit didn't come anywhere close to scoring a goal last night. It's rare to see that in an NHL matchup. I guess the most threatening chance was when Mantha made the power move and got stripped of the puck at the last second, but even that one wasn't especially close to becoming a goal. We won't see that kind of performance every night, but the fact that this group is capable of doing that while also dominating offensively is a really encouraging baseline for where they are this season.

Eh, Nino's goal was alright, but he's no Victor Rask, Minnesota's new #1C.

:help:

Seriously, he ended up the game last night between Kaprizov and Parise, after Nick Bjugstad did a very impressive, Ninja like, "Now You See Me" impression for the first two periods. Don't ask me how a 6'6" human can disappear in the middle of the ice, but he somehow does it.

At least Bjugstad only costed a 7th round pick and your wingers and defense are very good. Marco Rossi's on the way, and Judd Brackett is there, so I think Minnesota's just fine in the long run.

Lol, because of one play? It was a magnificent play, best one I’ve seen him make. After Tripp gushed he threw in some interesting comments about how Rod tore TT up in scrimmage for effort about this issue, and that there’s a switch that has to be flipped with TT. Coupled that with some of the things Sara has said it’s seemingly something Rod has really had to push him on. Which makes sense, if he wants to play with Aho he has to be diligent to a higher level.

I’m just curious. Anything other than the one play?

A couple positive observations and inferences from 1 game:
  • Team defense was good overall. Looking across the box scores and watching highlights from other games I've seen high scoring games with a tons of blown coverages. We looked well prepared to play our system and the structure was solid. We are one of 2 teams that did not allow a goal in their opener. Yes, it was against DET, but they are professional hockey players too.
  • NAT line looked good. Having Nino be successful on that line will be key to our season for many reasons.
  • I think 4th line Dzingel is, by design, a match-up issue for the opposing team. He looks like he will be able to take advantage of the lesser competition at times.
  • All of the D pairings looked good together. Slavin looked in mid-season form. It was awesome to see Hamilton stand up for Staal. Skjei added the physicality and looked threatening in transition. Pesce did not look rusty at all. Fleury looks to be continuing from where he left off. Gardiner's mobility looked better..
  • Mrazek answered when he was called upon. Glad to see us get that shut-out.
I don't want to harp on anything perceived as negative because it was only 1 game, the first game, in an unorthodox year. I just hope lines 2 and 3 can develop some more chemistry. Those were the lines being flip-flopped during camp, so I think they need to pick the groups and stick with them for a few games. Also, I think we need to start Reimer on Saturday. Would be good to start off the season with a win for both goalies, even if it is against DET.

I thought from the replay it looked like TT deflected it to niederreiter.

Every time there's a selke thread on the main board, someone from here should nominate Teravainen. Don't offer any evidence, don't engage anyone who disagrees, just put his name out there. Eventually people will start repeating it (even though its likely they haven't watched a single second of Canes hockey that didn't involve their favorite team) and soon after it'll be taken for granted on this web zone. And its probably true, to boot!

I thought Tripp's statement from Rod talked about TT flipping a switch between practice vs games and that he needed to put forth the same effort in practice that he does in the games.

May have misheard that, though.

So we are still in the same spot of not finishing on a lot of shots.

I wish though they had an option to turn off the fake noise.

I don't remember whether it was Nino or Petr, but in the interviews last night one of them was asked about the fake crowd noise, and said that they much preferred it to the silence of the bubble.
