I think Necas grew another inch this game

Wow, thats hilarious and I doubt we see it again (McDavids penalty shot)

It happens in the shootout from time to time. It's not exactly a rare occurrence. But it just doesn't usually happen to the best player in the game in such high pressure situation.

I mean.... Wow

Lucic scored again, too. Geoff Ward may be the best coach in the world.

Ahh, the cancer! It burrrrrrrnz!!

Aho's beast mode has been activated thanks in large part to the best player on the team, Tuevo (convince me otherwise). Svech continues to be top tier elite. He played a huge role in goals 4 and 5. Nino has been robbed so many times this season I honestly felt bad for him, but things appear to be edging the other way. Man that would be a huge lift for this team if he could find some consistency. Slavin as usual saved at least 2. Had some hiccups but overall pulled out a win against a very talented and fast Oiler team.

I am definitely calling Necas "Nitro" from now on. Whoever had that idea, it was brilliant.

What was funnier, McDavid’s penalty shot or Dougie’s center ice goal?

The sense of healthy and spirited competition between the top players on this team has been fun to watch. I feel like they all push each other to the next level. And,yes, , Turbo is criminally underrated. As a quasi-'noob' hockey fan I find his play to be incredibly artful and beautiful to watch.

The wildest part about it, to me, is that it was on fresh ice in Edmonton (the best ice in the league). Normally, flubs on penalty shots are on choppy ice or in the shootout on terrible ice. This was the best player on the best ice and he just whiffed it. What a break.

I'm going to go on record and state that McDavid doesn't make it to the end of his contract with them. He's going to get tired of dragging an overall bunch of meh night in and night out.

I maybe wrong, but for all I know I maybe right.

Good points.

Dougie went into full troll mode late in the game, and I’m 100% here for it.

Martinook nets game-winner in third, Aho scores twice

by Michael Smith @MSmithCanes / CarolinaHurricanes.com
Three goals for the Hurricanes. Three goals for the Oilers. Three goals for the Canes. A 6-3 final and two points for the Canes to begin this five-game road trip.
They'll take it, even if the back-and-forth nature of the game was a bit weird and hectic at times.
"We believe in this group," James Reimer said. "There are going to be momentum swings. That's how it is. That's how hockey is. You just stick with your game plan and trust it. If you execute, dig in and want it, usually it's yours."
The Canes built a 3-0 lead in the first period, only to see the Oilers chip away at it with a goal in the second and then two early in the third to draw the score even. Martinook's game-winner turned the tide, and the Canes hung three unanswered on the Oilers in the last 11 minutes of regulation.
"It's hockey. They're a skilled team over there. To think you're going hold that team, it's tough," Reimer said. "Marty with a massive goal, and we got 'er done."
Before the midway point of the third period, Jordan Martinook hopped on a loose puck in the slot and scored his second of the season to the delight of his family in the crowd and his teammates on the bench.
"Hometown hero," Aho smiled.
"That was a huge play in the game because everything had flipped at that point," head coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "We needed a couple of shifts, and he came out and got a goal. That settled us down a little."
That one felt good.

rod pushed the right button with nino by giving him an increased role and putting him back with aho and teuvo. you can even tell he was in the right mindset by mentioning to tripp that he scored 2 first period goals last year in this building with those two. it's almost like found money if he can get back to the concept of how he was playing last season and not forcing the offense but letting it come by good habits. who wouldn't covet that spot in the lineup?

dzingel had the right mindset tonight. he had 5 shots. if he's going to contribute, that's the kind of thing we're going to need to see more frequently. he has a really good shot and he's a little too selective with it. rod could stand to throw him a bone to get him going. it would be nice to see him get some time with svech perhaps. when haula went down it was devastating for dzingel because those two were showing some chemistry. playing with jordan, wallmark, and foegele is a failure to utilize his ability to be a passenger in a good way on a better line. he does far better being complimentary than he does creating his own offense. he's at his best when you don't notice him until he scores.

slavin against mcdavid is a beautiful thing even when mcdavid wins a few. to borrow a football reference, it's like watching luke kuechly audible in and out of plays at the line against tom brady doing the same before the snap. these two are playing chess while everyone else plays checkers. no pun intended. that's what you see watching maybe the best stick and body position defender in the league against the best skater and fastest hands in hockey. edmonton even tried to make carolina choose which assignment to neglect by splitting mcdavid and drai, which is a huge sign of respect. they sort of gave up on the combination that has been tearing the league apart in order to get one of those guys away from him. unreal.

the disparity between gauthier and necas tonight showcases the importance of preseason and better yet, reserving judgment until the games count. necas has been moving the needle in the proper direction. he's always been said to be a slow starter that adjusts towards the middle of the season like he did last season in charlotte and we were winning too much to call him up. (an incredibly convenient contract sliding excuse)
