In regards to some guys looking shaky, playing against Kane/Toews/Debrincat/Jones will do that. As garbage as Chicago is, that group offensively, is one of the toughest in the NHL to handle.

DeBrincat is maybe the most underrated forward in the league. That guy is just about unstoppable when he’s on.

Saw Gaborik’s name on the main board today. DeBrincat has a similar quality: if he has the puck, you’re in trouble.

I think the UFA crunch will be there either way. If the Canes sign Aho, and/or TT and/or Pesce in 2023, they are going to be long term deals, so whether its 2023 or 2024, the cap crunch will be similar (and Slavin is a UFA in 2024). Yes, it pushes the problem out 1 year, but doesn't really help the problem other than that 1 year.

It's 2024-25. Slavin is a UFA 2025.

My view is the Canes main cup contending window is now until Aho,TT, Pesce are UFAs (yes, I know some think it's longer given the prospect pool, but that's speculative). Given how this org has operated, I'm not convinced those guys will all be re-signed.

100% agreed.

it's why i didn't see the problem with signing Hamilton long term- core's gonna be blown up anyway

I think it's Nino. If Jarvis continues to play well, I think Nino is the odd man out and gets shipped at the deadline.

Or you send Seth back to juniors when Nino heals up and slot him in there next season, maybe.

Nino has size; Jarvis, despite the skill does not.

Right now for top 3 lines, Svech, JK, Nino, Staal, all provide needed size for playoff hockey (4th line of course has size and is gritty). I'm hard pressed on who the Borg would take out to play Jarvis (I would have said Fast but he's playing superbly this year).

Tough call.....

btw: agree re: DeBrincat....he's played terrifically against us and is a sniper.

Also want to let the record show that i agree DeBrincat is really, really good.

But beyond that I think if someone sits to make room for Jarvis it would have to be Lorentz, assuming everyone is healthy. Nino was on fire before he got hurt and has a versatility in playing a power or skill game that not a lot of our other forwards have. I like Lorentz's game a lot but if Jarvis keeps grabbing this opportunity like he has there are only so many spots

I think Jarvis will go back for WJC and the rest of junior season, then back to Raleigh for the playoffs.

But next year, I there needs to be a spot for him. I think Nino or Koktaniemi leaving would open a spot, but that's back to being overloaded at RW(?!?) I think we could see Trocheck leave as a UFA, Necas shift to C, and Jarvis on Necas's wing.

Id be surprised if we move anyone of quality out because of numbers. We are going for it, and should. We need the depth though. I bet everyone in the bottom six aside from Staal gets a "maintenance" night off and between that and injuries we could find a way to play Jarvis. Lorentz, Martinook, Fast, and Stepan are all guys who could get a rest for the kid. He could also use the occasional night off to watch as I'm sure he'll have bad nights too.

I hope he goes to the WJC's though. Great experience and we can just call him back after if he's still fitting in.

I think he goes back to his junior team before he plays 9 for so many reasons, including the WJC as you mention, but also the month long break the NHL is taking for the Olympics.

I forgot the olympics, he really should play during that so yes juniors make sense then. I dont think they care about losing the contract slide though, he can play in the NHL right now so he should if they can fit him.

A pleasant surprise for me is that he is not only demonstrating O quality but in addition he has been terrific defensively.

Don't know about that... he's played up in the N now, and legitly may continue to play. I think he's past the junior showcase tournament phase. You don't send NHLers to play in WJC.

If Jarvis continues to play well in this audition, I would not worry about WJC, Olympic breaks, junior team, contract status, any of it. Just keep playing him. If he falters, sure, those could be in play. We'll see how the important folks feel about it soon enough I suppose.

It happens pretty much every year. The Hurricanes did it with both Necas and Lindholm.
Neither of whom were really contributing at the NHL level at that point. Jarvis is.

We don't have to worry about an expansion draft like we did with Necas. Jarvis is a legitimately good NHL forward already. He's not going to get anything more out of junior, and we're a better team with him on it, and this ain't the easiest roster to crack. IMO, that's the end of the discussion. So we might have to sit a beloved 4th line guy on occasion when nobody's injured, c'est la vie. Sure, if his play tails off, fine, but with Nino out for a bit, and the other injuries that will certainly happen over an 82 game season, the idea of sending him back to juniors is insane.

Jarvis is good. I like him. They were 7-0 without him. The idea of sending him back to junior is not insane in any sense.

A 9-0 start gives you some level of comfort that you've got a team that's going to make the playoffs. With that, you can take advantage of all that the rules allow (40 games with the team, 9 games actually playing...or whatever) to give your prospect max exposure to the NHL, send him back down for a half-season to take it out on his Junior league, then bring him back up before the playoffs for roster depth and valuable experience. If injuries are a concern, let's not forget that any one of Drury/Rees/Suzuki could also use a look at the NHL.

I'll spare y'all the "teams need to be able to send Junior-eligible players to the AHL" rant.

It’s a good barometer for how far we’ve come. Just 4 years ago Jarvis would have been playing in the nhl out of necessity.

Now we’re debating whether or not he should get sent back to the WHL when he can clearly hack it in the bigs. That’s a certified Good Problem To Have.

It’s also telling to look at where former canes players/prospects are. Used to be guys would move on from the team and get signed to minor league contracts or f*** off to Europe. Now there’s former canes all over the league, simply because there wasn’t enough room for them on our roster. Guys like Roy, Bean, Geekie, Kuokkanen, Luostarinen, Forsling, Gauthier are all playing for nhl teams at varying levels of importance and success, and that list is nowhere near exhaustive.
