Weird to choose Perron over MJ imo

Joseph is great for a month and is meh after. He probably got half his points in the first 15 games last year, and did the same the year the Sens got him.

I personally think he's overpaid, but getting a decent pick alongside him offsets that.

Joseph actually put up all of his 35 points in 72 games at even strength or on the PK.

Barely played on the PP and when he did it was almost always on the second unit after the first unit had their turn.

He brings great two-way play, elite speed and above-average forechecking and tenacity. The kind of player who helps you all over the ice and brings value when he's not scoring.

Looking at the insane contracts thrown around yesterday, pretty stupid of NHL GMs to pass up a 27 year old above average 3rd liner for only 2.95M for 2 years. Embarrassing really.

Brutal we had to give up a 3rd... Joseph still had trade value, in my opinion. Whatever, what's done is done. Now, sign Pinto!

Short handed goals guaranteed, he’s a rocket and great on the PK

Kinda hoped we were keeping him, but lots of possible explanations.

Surprised we had to add a third.

This trade isn't about Pinto.

They are going to bring in a #5 defenseman at a similar cap hit.

Pinto is staying on a bridge deal, if he stays. They now have 7.35M with an 18 player roster. Add Pinto and a D for a combined 5.5M-6.0M, another 1-2 six figure roster players, and that would be a 22 player cap compliant roster. If Hamonic goes on LTIR, there is possibly room to bring it up to 23 if the salaries are low.

If I had to make a prediction:
  • They acquire a #5 D who makes 2M-3M.
  • They bridge Pinto at 2 years 2.M-3.5M.
  • They acquire Kaliyev from LAK and he signs a 1 year six figure "show me" contract to bridge him to arbitration.
People need to understand that Dorion handed Staios a young team with very few assets or cap flexibility. Most core players and secondary players were locked down with term. His job this offseason has been to dramatically change the room, but moving anybody has been difficult because of the contracts given out. They also cannot move any core guys. By the end of the off season, he'll have swapped out almost half of the active roster if he can mange to move on from a few more guys like JBD.

They badly need to make the playoffs this season because Giroux is a pending UFA, and Tkachuk's NMC is kicking in. While they obviously want to keep Tkachuk and build around him, if he is unhappy they may not want to enter a situation where his NMC activates with only 3 years of term remaining. If they trade him after his NMC kicks in, they will get a lot less than if they trade him this summer. So winning now avoids that situation all together by showing Tkachuk that this team can get him into the playoffs.

Their way of winning now is completely changing the coaching staff, and switching as many secondary or tertiary roster players as possible in exchange for long time veterans.
