Is he worth it right now? Yeah, perhaps. Will he be worth it at 36 years of age? Wouldn't bet on it. Are Blues competing right now? No.

The Blues just barely missed the playoffs. Six years is a ridiculous span of time in the NHL. Most teams don't bottom out for nearly that long. The ones who have picked super high and missed the playoffs over and over are exceptional management disasters.

If by studs you mean half way decent 2nd lairing D at some point in their careers, then sure, there is a fair chance of that happening.

Buchnevich is a really good all around player. Robert Thomas gives up 4.2 GA/60 at even strength without him. He gives up 3.1 GA/60 with him over the last 2 years. They desperately need Buchnevich to prevent Thomas from being the worst defensive C in the league.

4.2 GA/60 without Buchnevich isn't solid defensively. Even 3.1 GA/60 with him is pretty bad. He's horrific defensively. Maybe the worst C in the league defensively.

If Buchnevich were on a high profile team that gets a lot of media attention he would be considered a big time star player.

Most of the time when I see these contracts I cringe, but I honestly think this is a very fair contract for him based on the current market. He's 100% worth 8x6.

THAT SAID... I'm not sure if this makes sense for the Blues right now... feels like they are settling into picking in the 8-12 range in the draft for next few years and I'm not sure what that's really going to accomplish long term.

It's not that I don't like Thomas. It's that Buchnevich is a much better player. It's not even close and people have no problem with the Thomas contract even though he doesn't help you win at all.

Oof. What a terrible post. He gave up over 4 goals per 60 at even strength away from Buchnevich over the last 2 years. That's painfully bad. Even with him it was just over 3 goals per 60 against at even strength.

Buchnevich is very underrated. Thomas is basically the C version of Laine.

Where are you even pulling these stats, those aren't the numbers when you filter for 5v5 or even strength. Why don't you look at the same numbers for last season? Because those don't fit your narrative. Thomas and Buchnevich for the past few seasons have been our only top 6 forwards with quality defensive games. Besides them you either have Kyrou who is a work in progress defensively, Neighbours who last season is starting to get top 6 level, or a bunch of 3rd line guys.

The more you post, the more it's obvious you don't even watch any Blues games. If you seriously think Thomas and Laine are comparable defensively. Every Blues thread you make into some weird Thomas obsession. Does it come from those Blues/Tkachuk threads from years ago?
