While Zhitnik, Satan, Briere, Drury, Lydman, Tallinder, and Spacek are all examples of him muddling on rather than reaping potential UFA wind-falls at the deadline. Re-upping Connolly can also fall into that category too.

Briere and Drury were during a contending year. It would've been stupid to trade them at the deadline.

Tallinder and Lydman were during the division winning year. It would've been dumb to get rid of them.

Striving and failing. Part of Regier's tenure has been under the "just eek in" ownership of Golisano, yet at the same time, he didn't maximize his possible return with any of those guys when presented with the opportunity. This team has bled UFA's for more than a decade.

Very true though he did get astronomical value for Brian Campbell and Paul Gaustad. From those two alone he received a kings ransom... 1st round pick that turned out to be Tyler Ennis, Steve Bernier who was turned into two picks which became Raffi Torres rental and Brayden McNabb. Gaustad essentially turned into Girgensons.

So when the two trades were all said and done we turned two impending UFAS into a young, proven top 6 scoring center (Ennis), a future top 4 physical dman (McNabb), and a future captain/shutdown physical center, which we haven't had since Peca. And also the failed Torres rental. It doesn't make up for the other failed opportunities but when Regier did move 2 of his most prominent UFAs to be, he received a kings ransom for them. Ennis, McNabb and Girgensons should be 3 important pieces to our team for the next 10 years. Campbell and Gaustad will be retired within 5 years or so.

I think his only failures in capitalizing on UFAs to be were Satan, and Zhitnik.

I was not happy about how that went down one bit. Zhitnik had been my favorite player for a while, it hurt to see him walk for nothing. Satan and Zhitnik both had solid value at the time (especially deadline value) and could've gotten a good return.

As someone who's only watched since 2004, how did Regier handle proceedings last time the Sabres were clearly not in the playoff race?
