Hopefully the next GM doesn't think grunts like Chris Kunitz should be on the team over Claude Giroux.

We won the gold in spite of some poor roster choices, not because of them.

I think Yzerman's plan was always to step down after this one. Otherwise I'm sure he'd have given it some thought or talked to Hockey Canada about it. I had no real expectations he would remain in place, when he probably feels there are other worthy candidates. Seems like a very Yzermnan-like thing to do to step aside.

If the NHL returns, smart money's on Sakic to take over. He'll have some experience by then and he would provide a lot of name value/interest.

The Kunitz selection remains debatable; however, he played well in the final two games and the Kunitz-Crosby-Bergeron line came together and played a lot of important minutes. Nonetheless, I would love to hear about the other poor roster chances that were supposedly made by Yzerman and staff.

Stevie Y was all business this tournament... after a Canadian goal, everybody would be jumping around, high-fiving one another but he'd be looking serious and down to ice-level, hands in his pockets.

Do you imagine the pressure he have to deal with?

Also, much respect for him going back for another one in Russia when he could have very much just call it quit after Vancouver.

I kind of want it to be Cherry at the expense of gold medal hopes just out of curiosity of what kind of "good Canadian kid!" teams he would make.

I was a skeptic of some of his picks, but some of them made sense now that I look at it. I can't complain for a second about the defense. I wondered about Vlasic and Hamhuis over some more mobile defensemen but there is no way you can complain for a second about that defense. Still didn't like Kunitz on there over Giroux or initially St. Louis. He did come through in the gold medal game today but I get the feeling there would have been more goals with someone else.

That being said Yzerman was under plenty of scrutiny and delivered. But you can't hang onto this post for very long since there are so many candidates.

Maybe it's Lemieux's turn, who knows? Or Messier? Or even Ron Francis is someone who I think would pick a great team. Let's just stray away from the Bobby Clarkes and Pierre Gauthiers (how Pierre helped with 1998 I'll never know). We won, but let's not rest on our laurels here. Keep blitzing.

Best time to go out, if I could, I'd thank him for all the work he did for the last two tournaments.

Anyone think this is because the NHL might not be at the next Olympics, which if he then can't choose from NHLers it would be harder to scout players to take?

I think this Olympics really took a toll on Stevie. He didn't look as comfortable in the interviews as I remembered back in 2010. I think he grew tired of the spotlight and you have to wonder if he feels it conflicts with his current job as NHL gm. The quick announcement by him means he had already made up his mind some time ago.

There are rumors surfacing now that St.Louis asked for a trade after being cut the first time the roster was announced. We won't know if that's true especially if things may have smoothed over after he was named as Stamkos replacement. But I do remember on TSN when they asked Steve how that phone call went with Marty to say he was cut. Yzerman shifted the focus away from St.louis but you could tell by his body language that the call did not go well.

Well said. I too would love to hear the poor roster choices made by Stevie Y and Staff.

Like I have said before in my posts. Some of the player selections were debated only because of the amount of skilled Canadian players! Tough to argue with the decisions made after such a convincing gold medal victory! :shakehead

2018 Roster:

Bergeron-Crosby-Stamkos
McKinnon-Tavares-Duchene
Benn-Toews-McDavid
Drouin-Giroux-Seguin

BOOM

I'd love to see Yzerman as the President of Hockey Canada one day. His professional attitude toward winning needs to filter down to all levels of hockey.
