Steve Yzerman is not a good GM.

Not defending him at all. He messed up significantly. Poor mid-round drafting early on. Won traded, then would lose that player for jack shit. Swung for goalies like Ned and Husso who didnt do anything. 32nd ranked pro scouting department is on him.

However, there's a lot playing against him during his time here. He was given a team that was about as bone dry as anyone has seen in years. Holland is the most overrated salary cap GM in modern history that people will never harp on. He didnt capitalize the cap as much as he should have. Take on a bad contract and player, gain a big pick, utilize it. He didnt add during the 23-24 season, they barely missed... that was the golden goose team that could have moved the needle for a while. Didnt resign Ghost, lost him, signed Gustafsson, bad move. Waited too long for a goalie. The biggest one - Larkin. If he was from anywhere else, he probably moved him in 2021-2023 at some point for significant assets and we would be moving forward right now, not standing pat. Hands were tied on that one and it didnt work out and blew up.

He HAS TO win the Larkin deal. Or rep is tarnished.

The fact that he still hasn't made any changes to the scouting department is extremely telling. In a bad way.

Clear a few things up...

Yzerman couldn't just trade Larkin immediately after the that comment. Larkin has a full NTC and ultimately controls where he can be moved.

Larkin also didn't publicly request a trade. The story was leaked. My guess is it came from another team involved in discussions, not from Larkin himself. Publicly leaking it does nothing but hurt his leverage.

Ironically, this leak probably helps Yzerman more than it hurts him. It puts pressure on Larkin to expand his trade list because the clock is now ticking toward opening night.

If Yzerman doesn't find a deal he likes before the season starts, Larkin is still under contract. He'll be in a Red Wings sweater, likely without a letter, and facing a fanbase that is furious with how this played out.

Yzerman knows that. Larkin knows that. That's why I don't think Yzerman is under nearly as much pressure here as some people believe. If he doesn't get his price, he can wait.
It was probably leaked by Larkin’s agent, that’s what usually happens. Hard to believe SY still has a job, no GM has gone that long without making the playoffs, and still with the same team.

Florida is now armed with 2 1sts and 2 2nds are they coming hard for Larkin?

Would be shocked if Florida doesn't trade for Hellebuyck. Larkin isn't really that big of a need for them. I don't really see a purpose in spending that many assets when your healthy top-9 is already:

Verhaege-Barkov-Reinhart
Rodrigues-Bennett-Tkachuk
Luostarinen-Lundell-Marchand

Would he be an upgrade to shift Bennett to LW and run with Bennett-Larkin-Tkachuk? Sure, but the upgrade in net to Hellebuyck seems like a way bigger upgrade than adding Larkin to this forward group.

That'd be dumb. His entire family lives in Michigan and now he exposed them to being harrassed on the streets, and Dylan and his entire family will never be welcome back to Michigan. This leak literally put a target on his entire family's back (not in a violent way, in a heckling way)

It'd def. be better for him if it was never leaked. Ironically, Yzerman benefits more from it being leaked.

I'm sorry, but why should family members even be brought up? Dylan Larkin is the hockey player here.
