Rumor: Steve "Dangle" : Wheeler out of Winnipeg, will probably get bought out

Terrible captain and over the hill but they’re crazy to buy him out and they won’t because there’s no point. 1 year left, still a serviceable top 6 winger, been there for ages and they aren’t in a cap crunch.
If the plan is to rebuild, forced by other players or not, there's no point in waiting. If, as some have suggested, Wheeler is the biggest issue in the locker room and why players might want out, there's definitely no time like the present.

Makes good sense to buyout and create cap room. Then can take back dead cap to enhance returns for PLD and Hellybuck.

Pretty sure Wheeler is the one pushing for a buy out, pretty sure he was the one pushing for a trade last off season that the Jets didn’t really want to make.

Wheeler last offseason expanded his NTC, had his agent working trades but Chevy let it be known they won’t retain salary or take a contract back making it basically impossible to facilitate a trade.

You are wrong. But they did have a trade lined up but didn't want to retain 50 percent for 2 years.

Also since when is random Toronto Podcaster whose 15 minutes were up an hour ago a source?

I thought everybody had already taken this as the "expected outcome" basically since the whole Bowness-end-of-season presser? This is "old news" isn't it?

Wdym 15 minutes were up lmao?

He just quit his job at Sportsnet to work on his company full time.

Whether you like him or not, he knows people in the industry. His company employs Chris Johnston.

How are his 15 minutes up and how is he a 'random podcaster'? The guy grinded on his own for years and was then successful at Sportsnet and now has his own company. I'm not the biggest Dangle fan or anything but it doesn't seem like you know what you're talking about.

A buyout benefits wheeler as much as the Jets. He gets that money, plus can sign for a steep discount on a contender who needs depth scoring and "leadership".

If a team like Pittsburgh or Edmonton can get him for 2M, he can go into that room and just play. It's not like he'd take over the team or anything

Lol when did Steve Dangle become an "insider?

I'd say he's on the level of Tomy Marinaro in Montreal where he has a couple connections and will break news every now and then, but isn't really an insider.

They also have Allan walsh as well.

Yeah, I’m sure Chevy or Wheeler’s agent leaked that to Dangle.

Besides, this was already reported. Is Dangle just recycling old news?

He's old now but a buyout would be a pretty sad way to end the tenure of a guy who's been here since day 1, most points, most games, former captain, etc.

To be fair, this could be something that both the team and player are in favour of. A buyout gives him a shot at signing a low cost deal elsewhere.

Although I’d be surprised if they couldn’t find a buyer at 50% retained. But at age 36 and after $75m career earnings he may only want to play for certain teams and is willing to take a buyout and a super cheap contract to do it.
