Confirmed with Link: Stepan and Raanta for Arizona 2017 7th Overall and DeAngelo Mod Post #286

You're an optimist. Good on you. I like it. I'm more of a realist/pessimist.

I like the insinuation that only you and your opinion are connected to reality/correct despite literally just going through a season where everyone for some reason thought the team would be a dumpster fire despite having a lot of talent evenly dispersed across multiple lines. We STILL have nearly all that talent (Stepan was NOT that talented or impactful overall compared to what we are likely going to have as a result of getting rid of him), a bunch of FA money, some enticing FA options and the team just got better on its bottom 2 RD pairs.

People are MASSIVELY overrating the loss of Stepan and Girardi. I really like Lindberg, but he was topping out as a 3C. You can find a 3C. (I really, really liked that guy a lot though and feel he's one of those guys that just has IT in the PO's) So depending on FA here there's nothing realistic about assuming the team absolutely is going to be significantly worse. If they are? Who cares? It's pro sports folks, you don't normally get to stay in the PO's for 11/12 years. It's really not an issue to arm a contender a season or two down the line instead of slightly bolstering a weaker team AND hampering a future team. In fact, it's exactly what you're supposed to do to win and it's exactly why we HAVE been competitive, while building 3 or 4 true contending teams for over a decade

Losing Lindberg is more disappointing. Since he went for nothing. I think he really turned a corner this year.

If everything breaks right, #7 becomes what Stepan is. Way too much risk. Terrible trade.

That's a somewhat weird vacuum to look at this in. The league is getting faster. As it continues to do so, Step is looking slower. Couple that with locking into his NTC in a few days and keeping him is a risk also.

Essentially, Raanta is a thow in here. Backup goalies are one of the easiest things to find and our goalie coach develops them well as solid players and minor trade chips. Step more or less pulled in a strong RD prospect and a number 7 overall, a release from being stuck with his coming NTC, and a lot of open cap space, which is a good haul in time. Just taking G out of AV's hands and putting DeAngelo there in place of is a win in itself.

The reality is, this is a move to improve the team long-term and in 3-5 seasons will have solid long-range benefit. If this is the direction the team is moving, and it should be, then I like this trade and the global direction the team is going. Younger, more mobile and the flexibility of shedding two NTCs this off-season in G and Step.

I like this move. Get Smith signed, please don't sign Shattenkirk.

I think there is more coming before the draft.

I appreciate the optimism you spread around. We could use more of that.

But I'm gonna go ahead and wait to see what else we do before I get excited for this season. We could easily miss the playoffs for a few years as things stand. I'm OK with that, I'm just saying. I have no cause for celebration atm. I'm neither thrilled, nor unhappy. Mixed. Sometimes people believe in things that simply never actually happen. Santa delivering gifts. Various presidents doing anything they said they would. Happens all the time.

You're an optimist. Good on you. I like it. I'm more of a realist/pessimist. In the latter two scenarios... heh. Yeah. In the former, well, maybe with a few moves we're a contender again this season! Right now? Not impressive.

I do like the "going young" movement. But we're rebuilding or we're not. Let's not half-ass it.

Let's not confuse my being an "optimist" with not living in reality as you suggest Stasis...ok? Let's also not confuse your apparent pessimism with being more realistic either?

I am actually being very realistic and have looked at the facts, the moves GMJG has done since being given the keys to the car and I cannot be more impressed with the moves he's made and his evaluation skills especially when we compare them to the previous GM we had.

I look at our team and IMO with a tweak here and a tweak there, the window of ours is still very much open. I mentioned in my post the moves I'd like us to make...signing a Shatty,re-signing a Smith, signing a Bonino and maybe a BBoyle in FA...all of which are "realistic" and possible. Are all these things going to happen? Probably not but what I am confident in and I believe most of my Ranger brothers are, is Gorton has some things up his sleeve that he will make to insure we have a competitive, exciting and playoff if not Cup worthy team.

I don't think that is too much of a stretch to think seeing it's based on facts and not me just having some blind polyanna thinking. Gorton knows what he's doing. I trust him and I think the rest of Ranger Nation including pessimists like you should as well. He hasn't failed us yet.

I don't want a homophobic racist on my team. I'll take a cheap or dirty player. Or a guy who says some borderline **** to get under someone's skin. DeAngelo is an awful human being. He shouldn't have the privilege of wearing this jersey.

Rarely will I ever object to a player on the team I root for. I've defended all sorts of bad characters. But DeAngelo's outright bigotry is just part of a pattern of character flaws he has.

If he was just a dirtbag? Cool. All the merrier. Attaching his massive personality flaws and racism? Blech.

What did he say that was racist?

From my research, they didn't give specifics of what he said. Only that it was race-related and derogatory.

As for his abuse of officials, I think he was simply shoving the ref as he was trying to break out of their grip.

More like he knocked the refs hands/arms off of his to break free. The video is posted here somewhere. He raised his arms up and then lowered them somewhat forcefully to break the hold on him. Obviously a no no, but not a violent act or anything crazy.

I asked several times but I didn't see any confirmation that it was race based. Are you sure? Several people said it was homophobic. Regardless I cant judge him for good or bad without knowing what he actually said.

I'm with you Nicky. I couldn't find anything, even the articles I read about it just allege the remarks were made.

Yandle is good. Tony D is not.

He should be a sheltered 3rd pairing PP specialist this season. Hopefully he works on that aspect of his game and we get a TB Dan Boyle out of this guy.

Thanks. Obviously he's still young, but was hoping he could bring a little more than sheltered 3rd pairing minutes this year. Guess we still need to sign a top 4 RHD.

The first incident I remember involved him calling either teammates or a referee a "bundle of sticks." Not only did he apologize, but so did his father as he lamented he was using language he had heard at home.

Yandle was good at defense?! Compared to who

That is the first specific thing I have heard. Hopefully he has matured and can move on. Arizona fans said he was fine while there. We wanted him. Gorton said they researched him.
