After Day 3
Standings-Table-Day3.png

Wow, what a difference a day makes! After yesterday's goal fest that saw nearly 40 goals scored in just 3 games, today's action saw defense and goaltending take center stage. The last game of the day featuring Russia and the Czech Republic amazingly yielded ZERO pool points. The other games didn't offer up much in the way of scoring so the standings actually remain unchanged. Statsy was the winner on the day with 5 points including an unexpected Levi start (which was very nearly a shutout), as well as a pair of points by Kasper Simontaival. As with yesterday, Tom also ends up with the second best day, collecting 3 points from Cozens and Tomasino. Much of the rest of the field ended up with just two points on the day. Tomorrow's action features just two games (AUT/SWE and SVK/GER), with those having Swede heavy rosters primed for a chance to move up the standings.

Here are today's numbers:
Statsy - 5 pts
Tomsburninghat - 3 pts
Canada4Gold - 2 pts
Christien - 2 pts
FightingSioux - 2 pts
WeThreeKings - 2 pts
GrandLarseny - 1 pt
Khabby - 1 pt

By the way, I have to say that today was just another example of why I love this tournament. It remains predictably unpredictable. If you told me that there would be only 11 goals scored in the 3 games after 37 yesterday I would've said you were crazy. The underdogs came to play today and with the Czech win over Russia this tourney just got turned on its head. Awesome!

3 days in the books and pretty damn exciting! Those were a crazy couple of unexpected late games yesterday. Let's hope that wakes up our Canadian crew a bit. One point that was made was it was the first time in a very long time any of those kids have played back to back games at this kind of high level of play. Only 5 of our players have been playing some form of hockey in the last month or so. Should've seen that coming...

It will be interesting to see how Slovakia plays vs Germany. The Germans might actually have a chance to keep it tight and maybe pull off an upset. Stutzle and Peterka look pretty strong as expected. They'll have their legs for today's game.

Sweden today? Could be a blowout...8-1? Austria got 10 shots on the Americans so it should be much the same today. Could see Christien head out of the basement today with a big showing.

Well Slovakia has f***ed me by not using Hlavaj in winnable games.

All I can say is at least it was my last pick, unlike others who are watching Blomqvist, Gauthier, and Wallstedt getting no starts either.

I have Raymond and Abramov in literally almost every pool I'm in. Oh year I also have Garand or Wallstedt in all of them, and Schneider in 2 of them. Good night for me.

After Day 4
Standings-Table-Day4.png

The fourth day of action is in the books and things continue to make little sense. After the US trounced Austria we were all set for Sweden to do the same. Instead they struggled to score four. In the other group, the team that got absolutely wrecked by Canada just beat the team that put a serious scare into Canada. Up is down, black is white and cats now chase dogs.

Not a whole lot of pool points handed out this day, but Tom continues his solid run as he picks up a win and a shutout from Alnefelt. The four points put him into a tie with Statsy (who picked up a single assist from a snakebitten Holtz), but the goals tiebreaker gives him first place. Grand Larseny has Holmstrom and Perterka each pick up a pair of helpers for the only other 4 point outing on the day. As predicted, Christien does get out of the basement (also on a tiebreaker) as he cathes up to FightingSioux's 12 points.

It's back to the three game slate today starting with an interesting tilt between the US and the upstart Czechs. Canada also looks to return to their stat padding ways as they take on an underwhelming Swiss team, while Russia looks to tee off on Austria. They're goalie was dynamite yesterday but can he do it again? Will the Russians get their struggling offense going? We demand answers, dammit!!!

Today's numbers:
Tomsburninghat - 4 pts
GrandLarseny - 4 pts
Christien - 3 pts
Khabby - 3 pts
Canada4Gold - 2 pts
FightingSioux - 1 pt
Statsy - 1 pt
WeThreeKings - 1 pt

PS - Sorry for the late update, but the good news is I'm off work for the rest of the tourney (except semis I think) so updates should come the same night. Unless my team starts getting crushed... obviously. :sarcasm:

WeThreeKings and FightingSioux both cleaning up in the US game! 9 and 6 points, respectively. WTK just took over the pool lead.

After Day 5
Standings-Table-Day5.png

This year's tournament seems to be alternating between goal fests and low scoring days, and today was another absolute shootout! The US, Canada, and Russia each take turns beating up their opponents and there were points aplenty to be had. Trevor Zegras starts the day in fine style for WeThreeKings as he collects the nifty five point game. This was part of a huge 13 point day for WTK that also included some help from his Russian guys. Not to be outdone, Christien more than doubles his previous pool total on the shoulders of Quinton Byfield's massive 6 point outing (in 11 minutes of playing time, by the way). He too gets some help from his Russians as the top line with Podkolzin and Amirov woke up today. At the top of the pool, strong efforts today by Tomsburninghat and Statsy, each with 9 points, continue their armwrestle with 33 points apiece. They just managed to hold off the surging WTK who is now just a single point behind. Christien finds the middle ground behind the leading pack but five points clear of the trailing pack, a glut of four players lead by Khabby at 20 points. Among that group, only FightingSioux had a decent day, picking up 7 points on the strength of some American scoring as well as the shutout effort from Spencer Knight.

Today's numbers:
Christien - 13 pts
WeThreeKings - 13 pts
Statsy - 9 pts
Tomsburninghat - 9 pts
FightingSioux - 7 pts
Canada4Gold - 5 pts
Khabby - 4 pts
GrandLarseny - 2 pts

Three more games are on tap tomorrow including some match-ups that will be integral to the standings race. Finland tries to keep pace with Canada as they take on Slovakia, while an oddly full strength German side plays the Swiss looking for a berth in the Quarters. On the other side of the pool, it's a massive battle with Russia trying to end Sweden's lengthy prelim win streak.

Ideal situation is a Hlavaj shutout, but if not, then I'll need Jarventie & Niemela to score at will.

Momentum from Afanasayev needs to continue as well and hopefully at some point the Swedes realize that Sundsvik is Sucksdsvik and puts Niederbach on the top line.

If the trend continues, today might be a lower scoring day as matches become a little more challenging although the Germans might have another breakout game playing a tired Swiss team.

Although he's been playing fairly good I'd like to see Simon get the Knak of getting on the scoring sheet.

You know it's a bad night when you don't even feature in the daily recap paragraph. I want to blame it on losing Dach but my picks have just not panned out. What a shame, but that's just how she goes.

I often mention who had a bad day, but I thought your day was so comparatively terrible that I would give you a break and not bring it up.

So far it looks like each team in the top 3 have enough to keep pace with one another.. Khabby should get a boost from Stutzle.

Wallstedt starting? Here's where my comeback starts. 5 straight shutouts to finish the tournament. :sarcasm:

I assume Alnefelt will start tomorrow.

Every comeback starts somewhere! Just ask the Swiss. Of course, their's fell short, but don't take that as any sort of omen or anything.
