Ovechkiin has that Jagr-like passion for the game, he just LOVES the sport and will in all likelihood play until his body breakdowns. He's got another 10-15 seasons in him.

I don't think Ovy will go down as the greatest player ever. I just can't see anyone topping Gretzky in that regard. However, I think he has a chance to become the greatest goal scorer of all time should he pass 800 and approach the record.

I was old when Ovechkin entered the league. That is all I will say about that there. If you disagree with me about Ovechkin, that's fine.

You are certainly entitled to you opinion but a majority of experts (reporters, current and former players) would probably disagree.

Till he scores 895 goals Gretzky stays the best goal scorer in the history of hockey.
Adjusted stats is for wanna be's.

Not having any concern myself for 'best ever' debates, I'm curious: why do you think we shouldn't at least try and make comparisons like this? I don't think it's fair to say players are worse today than they were 30 years ago. Today's players are parts of a system that encourages more defensive responsibility and structure that didn't exist in the 70s and 80s. You don't think it's worth considering than in such a debate?

Show me that link where, majority of experts (reporters, current and former players) would probably disagree.
Just a false made up statment on your part.

Did i say there was already a study that had been done regarding this? No! Hence the word "probably" not 100% guaranteed fact. Do you "know" Ovechkin is the best goal scorer ever? If so please provide irrefutable proof of your statement. If you "probably" think he is then that is your opinion, see the difference?

If he were to achieve this feat, somehow pass Gretzky for most goals of all time, in this defensive game as we know it... would he be the best hockey player of all time? or just the greatest scorer of all time?

Just the great goal scorer of all time, not the best player or greatest scorer (points).

Still that would be quite an accomplishment.

No one "knows this", it's subjective after all but the evidence or stats with context all suggest that AO is a lock for top 3 goal scorer of all time as his floor...right now.

Yes that would be my opinion not the majority of experts (reporters, current and former players]as your trying to lead others to believe.

i disagree that Gretzky is the greatest, points dont tell the tale. But this thread isnt about that.

If you use points than you have to assume Messier is a top 10 player of all time, and I think we can all agree he isnt close to that.

From 1979-80 through 88-89, Gretzky scored 1837 points. The next closest was Peter Stastny at 986. He almost DOUBLED the 2nd place player in scoring. In points per game, he was the only guy who averaged more than 2 points a game. The next guy in line was Mario at 1.92 points per game, but he only played in 368 games compared to Gretzky's 774 games.

I get it that the league wasn't as deep. I get it that defensive systems weren't as good. I get it goalies weren't as good.

But you're overcompensating for all of those effects. He was way too dominant to simply suggest he was a product of the era. Had he started his career in 05-06 with Sid and OV, he probably outperforms Sid and OV easily.

How can Ovi be the best goal scorer of all time if he never scores 50 in 50 (or even comes close)? He doesn't even have a single 5 goal game. Sorry, but if he gets more goals than Gretzky, it's only because he'll compile them. Like Messier or Francis, Ovechkin will have compiled his way to being the best goal scorer

Ovi is far from a compiler he has 5 Rocket Richard trophies for christ sakes. Him not getting 50 in 50 means he plays in a different era.

Not sure I see the logic there. Gretzky set the record in 20 seasons. Ovechkin's on pace to do about the same. The only difference is Gretzky piled them up early and faded late, and Ovechkin has been remarkably consistent. Divide his career so far in half, and Ovi is scoring goals at the exact same rate in the second half as he did in the first.

Despite being an extremely physical forward, he's missed fewer than 20 games to injury. We can talk all day about his shot and scoring ability, but his physical fortitude is what's allowed him to stay so dominant for so long. And as many have said before, it was way, way, easier to score goals back when Gretzky was at his peak.

Nothing against Gretzky. Best player ever. No one else comes close (thanks in no small part to him being able to play at a high level for a couple decades). No single player has dominated any of the major team sports the way he did. His stats are bonkers. But yeah, Ovechkin is (already) the greatest goal scorer.

IMO he's already the best goal scorer of all time. Doesn't need to break the goal record to be that.

Goalies when Howe and Gretzky played were awful. Go watch a game from the early 80s and tell me goalies we're doing well. Wayne did start catching better goaltending the last half of his career. And not surprisingly his goal totals dropped.

Put this in perspective only 2 guys as of right now born in the 1980s have broken 500 goals, Ovi and Crosby. You can lump in Hossa and Marleau as they were both 1979 birthdays. And Crosby just broke the 500 mark while Ovi is closing in on 775. That's nuts.

Scoring is way down there is just no way to slice it. And to have dinner what Ovi has done in terms of putting the puck in the net is crazy.

Pretty uninformed if you really believe that and you don’t think it had more to do with being past his prime goal scoring years like almost all players at 30+, playing 100+ games year in and year out from deep playoff runs, and of course injuries like this: `One-In-A-Million' Injury -- Rare Back Ailment May End Career Of L. A. Kings Star | The Seattle Times

Yeah, Gretzky still put up video game numbers, but it drives me nuts how people think his career doesn’t have its own what ifs like anyone else and the slide after his first dozen years was due to not being able to adapt or goalies suddenly figured him out.

Ignorant comments like this tell me all I need to know.
