State of USA Hockey after another disappointing Olympics Part II

They need better scoring wingers. Against the best teams, USA did not generated even strength goals and Kessel became Mr invisible.

I think team USA was built really well as an NHL roster but they should have brought a little less grit and a little more offensive skill to take advantage of the bigger ice. They had Quick at the top of his game keeping pucks out but they couldn't score against elite defense pairings.

I am sure their attitude is fine. They seem like a nice bunch of young men.

The only thing I would say is, at the Olympics and WJR's, all too often U.S. teams will start off like a house on fire, against the weaker teams, and then they are overrated by fans and non fans alike. I remember when I was at the WJR's in Buffalo, the U.S. dominated their division and everyone was saying they were going to steamroll the competition in the medal round. Then they were crushed by Canada. Yet, no one ever learns!!! No one ever says, "Let's wait and see". It happens over and over again. Heck, even I was guilty of it this week.

In this tournament, the U.S. beat up against Slovakia and Slovenia but were clearly outplayed by Russia, yet everyone had them rated ahead of Sweden, Finland and Canada. When will posters/fans ever learn?

Revisionist history. As far as the World Juniors, the US have learned and did adjust quite well. Two Gold Medals since 2010. Lesson learned

The US lost a 1-0 game to a great team and again the US needs to learn because the fans had some good feelings heading into the Semis. Way off again :shakehead

Once again you showed the US hockey fans how to Gloat but no lessons. Canada out-coached, out managed and out-played the US in one game, during the Olympics by a goal.

The point is, with the exception of the U.S.'s occasional win at the WJR's, they tend to disappoint. Again, usually with much hoopla. Nothing is being revised.

As for "good feelings", I think most posters would agree that the Americans tend to overhype their team compared to the final performance. The 2014 Olympics was no different.

Remember, you had Patrick Kane and many fans saying, "Gold or Bust". When you say something like that and then finish fourth after only beating one strong team, and needing a faulty net peg to do that, it is hard not to scoff.

Please name another non American player who said that.

The US are always a threat to medal in the U20 and U18 tournaments now that isn't occasionally. Comparing to how the US development program used to be, I'd say the US development is right where it should be. One of the reasons Canada hasn't won the U20 Gold in quite some is because of the US.

Most Canadian hockey fans don't like that there are a lot more US born players in the NHL and I expect them to not like it when the US looks good in the prelim. It wasn't hype as they were playing well.

No disappointment when losing to a great team like Canada by a goal. I suppose when a country is only good at a few winter sports you have to hold onto hockey with reckless abandon.

we finished ahead of the US in the medal count

The U.S. beats Canada on average, at the WJR's, once out of every 10 times. You really flatter yourself and your team - which is what I was saying in the first place.

I just wish they could back it up when it counts. Most times they don't. They just beat up on lesser teams and scream, "Look how good we are!!!"

Most of your players tend to be fillers and grinders. Nothing to see here.

You're a country of 317,000,000 and the only sports you dominate are basketball (altho you have struggled there in the past as well) and American football (which no one else plays). You can't even medal at the World Baseball Classic - and that's your National Pastime. So much for only being good a few sports. (On a per capita basis) You have nothing to brag about.

It should always be gold or bust.
Don't have a plan B.

The US finished with 28, Canada finished with 25.

USA is the only country in the world that goes by total medals, every other nation goes by golds, then silver then bronze.

All medals do not hold the same weight, is 35 bronze better than 34 gold?

So no, USA did not finish ahead of Canada.

we have more gold - i know the us sites organize medal count by total # to push the US up the standings

its by medal type over #

Golds then Silver then Bronze

It depends how you count. If you count by Golds, and many countries do, Canada finished ahead. If you count overall medals, the U.S.

Again, you are a country of 317 million people. We have 30.

Not flattering just looking at how many Gold medals the US won since 2010.

No Idea what fans you're speaking of except the ones you sat near in Buffalo Those aren't the US hockey fans I'm around.

Most of your players tend to be fillers and grinders. Nothing to see here.

Not if you look how well the US born players are currently playing in the NHL. Very dumb statement.

I don't quite understand why Canadians posters have to get involved on US team discussion, and arguing about medal count on this thread.
As a Canadian, I wish they cheer on their forum and leave the discussion alone. It makes us like a brag.

a poster mentioned Canada only being good at one sport clinging to hockey and i mention we beat the US in the medal count

thats hardly an argument
