Stars vs Oilers: Rank the D

He’s lead the league in goals against in the playoffs without even playing all the rounds.

Ceci drags him down but he also sucks, definitely not Finnish Slavin like some Dallas fans think
Lindell has played in all the rounds what are you talking about?

Last playoffs Lindell had a GF% of 40 and an xGF% of 48. This season GF% of 39 and an xGF% of 38.

Lindell 23
GF 27% (11 for 29 against)
xGF 39%

24
GF 40% (17 for 25 against)
xGF 48%

25
GF 39% (13 for 20 against)
xGF 39%

Maybe less that he's being dragged down by Ceci this year and more than he benefited a lot from Tanev last year.

Lindell is the most overrated D in the league for sure. He's a #3-4 at the absolute best, and often more like a #5. He's "good" in the way that people used to call Ceci "good". Puck possession, puck retrieval, and controlled zone exit black hole. A modern day Kris Russell with size.

This is obviously hyperbole, but he's about as mundane as they come as "shutdown" D. Tanev is twice the defensive Dman that Lindell is.

Lindell led the NHL in goals against in 2023 with only 3 rounds of play and set the NHL record for goals against in 2020 when Dallas made their trip to the Finals. Part of this is because he's a #4 dman being misused as a top competition shutdown guy, but the guy just isn't it.

Here is the playoff scoring. I know offence isn't everything. Fully agree but... Cam Fowler also had a hell of a first round!

Cody Ceci is actually quite a good player, and I enjoyed his work in Edmonton (esp. in the 2022-23 season, which was his best of the three by some distance).

The only issue with Ceci is that he is... slow. One thing Edmonton has done a good job of since last summer is shifting their D-core to become really fast, and fast at puck-moving. Guys like Stecher and Klingberg and Walman are all zippy, fast skaters who make a good first pass. Bouchard isn't exactly speedy out there, but damn he can make quick first passes as well as anybody in the League.

Ironically, it's only the Oilers' best overall Dman, Mattias Ekholm, who is kind of slow, and that's mainly because he's getting old. But he remains their best shut-down guy.

I always felt Ceci was a victim of deployment (and still is). He's a tweener between top 4 and 5/6. Then gets over 20 TOI in top 4 for long spans.

I akin him to Brett Kulak.. Kulak is an amazing 5/6 who can move up in a pinch. I maintain if Ceci was our 5/6 (beside Kulak) and moved up in a pinch then he'd be a hero.

My issue was never really with his play. It was that we didn't seem interested in getting a better version of him and pushed him down the line a little.

Tanev is a pylon that can't defend though, he is also golfing because he chose Toronto over Dallas like a clown.

That first statement couldn't be anything further from the truth. On the flip side Lindell can sort of defend, and I would hope he could because he spends 70% of his time on ice hemmed in his own zone.

Problem was him making 3.25mil. He's a bottom pairing D who needs a good puck retriever and puck mover to succeed. The Oilers should never have been looking to push him down at that cap hit. Kulak at 2.75 is not only a better D than Ceci, but he doesn't need someone to retrieve and break out pucks for him. When Ceci doesn't have that you start to see CF%, xG%, HD and SC% in the low 40s which is a recipe for disaster in the playoffs at 5v5.

I actually felt he was underpaid for the role he was given.

Felt like taking a Lada to a Fast and Furious event and being mad at the car.lol

He was getting caved in that role for at least 2/3 years. So you're probably right he was underpaid for the role, but he was also failing at that role.

In contrast Klingberg and Walman are both succeeding in a similar role at a similar or lesser cap hit. Kulak as well these playoffs has been killing it in a harder role than Ceci ever got.
