Chicago doesn't have to worry about money as much as some other teams, and the most expensive salary years in Jones' deal will have passed by the end of this season. Including signing bonuses, Jones is due to earn $10.5 million next season, $8 million in 2026-27, and $7.5 million for the final three years of this contract.

But, again, this isn't just a salary dump and it would require the Hawks getting a top young asset or two for them to make the deal. But, if Chicago can get off the contract and another team feels it's getting decent value on a reduced AAV for Jones, this could happen. And Jones could use a fresh start.

From everything I've gathered, Chicago has had legitimate talks with the Dallas Stars about Jones. We'll have a better understanding where it leads through the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Foundation of deal feels there

Hawks retain $2-2.5M going forward (would seem like reasonable max for Hawks) and Stars can dump Dumba and his contract (Another year at $3.75M) in deal going back to Hawks

It's just a matter of what assets Hawks would get in deal to retain

Stars 2026 1st seems safe bet as ask from Hawks and then it comes down to what young prospect or player Hawks would have interest in that Stars would make available

Christian Kyrou and Tristan Bertucci are Dallas top 2 defensive prospects both were 2nd round picks (not including Bischel as a prospect who is now probably considered NHL regular).

If the Stars do add Jones it would mean their NHL 6-7 defenseman are set for a few years so could give up a defensive prospect as part of the deal.

A 1st in 2026
Kyrou or Bertucci
Dumba (1 yr remaining)

For Jones with some retention.

A base like that would be solid..

I'd bet on a big resurgence with Seth Jones if we saw him paired with say...Heiskanen. And for some reason, it really does just seem like a fit. But that cap number is brutal to work around. Even with the cap set to skyrocket.

I hate to pump my own tires.... Even called the retention amount.

They have Benn& Seguin contracts going off the books soon

Heiskanen is signed at 8.45M longterm so yeah they can easily if they want to
Wyatt Johnston coming up. Roberson and Harley the year after. Oettinger starting his extension next season. Seems like it’s/will get tight fast.

Blackhawks have a ton of prospect depth on the back end, would probably be looking for a forward instead.

Hawks D group of 23/under is sick. Keep your mediocre d prospects

It’s probably the only team that really makes sense. If I was Dallas I would only do it if Chicago really leans into salary retention.

The cap is expected to go up by 30M in the next 3 years

Oettinger is getting a 4M raise, Robertson& Harley are max looking at 4-5M raises in their next contracts. Heiskanen and Hintz are locked up for longer at below market value

Then you look at:

Benn 9.5M gone after this season
Seguin 9.85M gone after 2 seasons
Marchment 4.5M gone after next season
Dumba 3.75M after next season
Dadonov 2.25M gone after this season
Suters buyout money gone after next season

So they can definitely keep the band together and add a quality/high end player. Especially if they can drop Dumbas contract

Johnston will go from elc to real money but there’s zero chance he’s getting a superstar deal this offseason

Their cap is in pretty damm good place

I don't see Chicago retaining on $41 million. The contract stinks and Chicago isn't going anywhere, but that's a lot of money in dead cap.

$2-2.5M in dead cap for next 5 years with cap rising is not really a lot of dead cap

Hawks also aren't pressed for big extensions outside of Bedard for several years at this point and right now are not spending to cap during rebuild

If the Stars get Jones, he will be paired with an elite, highly skilled dman (Miro or Harley) OR one of the best shutdown defensive defensemen in the league (Lindell). Would be a win-win for him.

Heiskanen-Jones
Harley-Lyubushkin
Lindell-Ceci

*Even though Bichsel should be in over Ceci*

Retaining 2.5-3million/year isn't really that bad, especially with the mega cap increase that are coming.

Yea I think he'd do great in Dallas. People gotta realize hes playing on an atrocious team right now and would look much better with more defensive talent around him.

...so they can add a bigger, shyttier contract on a 30 year old who hasn't played a meaningful game in five years and LOOKS like he hasn't played a meaningful game in five years??...tough ask...

I do somewhat agree but I also think Jones is viewed as a good player on a crack team and someone will bite

Maybe more cap Dumps and salary retention

Is Marchment a dump ? Trade Donato back ?
