Stanley Cup Final Schedule

Previous 7 game SCF series:

03-Started May 27th and ended June 9th
04-Started May 25th and ended June 7th
06-Started June 5th and ended June 19th
09: Began May 30th and ended June 12th
11-Started June 1st and ended June 15th
19: Began May 27th and ended June 12th

None of these series took more than 14 days sans one. Now, we are faced with the possibility of it taking 16 days. Not only that, when is the last time that an entire postseason took 9 weeks (65 days) to complete?

There are 4 two day breaks between games as well. Not sure that's the best way to get the attention of people just getting in to hockey.

The finals really don’t need to take a month
The four three-day breaks between games is frustrating imo.

Ratings will be horrible for Edmonton vs Sunrise...not even Miami but Sunrise lol...nobody in Miami cares about this team

Dallas vs Florida would be bad as well but not that bad

NHL NEEDS New York!!!!

No offense to Canada but most Americans only know Toronto and Montreal. Only 50% know Vancouver or have heard of it.

Nobody can point to Edmonton on a map

However I'm cheering for McDavid to bring the cup back to Canada!!!!!
I don't think most people can point to much on a map these days lol

NBA claimed that day for its potential Game 7. ABC/ESPN wouldn't want to counterprogram itself or take one of those games out of prime time.

June 6: (T) NBA G1
June 7: (F)
June 8: (S) NHL G1
June 9: (S) NBA G2
June 10: (M) NHL G2
June 11: (T)
June 12: (W) NBA G3
June 13: (T) NHL G3
June 14: (F) NBA G4
June 15: (S) NHL G4
June 16: (S)
June 17: (M) NBA G5
June 18: (T) NHL G5
June 19: (W)
June 20: (T) NBA G6
June 21: (F) NHL G6
June 22: (S)
June 23: (S) NBA G7
June 24: (M) NHL G7
It's too bad for U.S.-based fans that both the Stanley Cup Finals and the NBA Finals aren't on TNT instead. TNT is much better than ESPN with the NBA and the gap is even wider with the NHL IMO.

Three-day breaks between upwards of four games is pure silliness. The season potentially ending towards the end of June and mere days before the draft is unnecessarily drawn out.

I personally don't like the Cup being pushed back, but there's a problem with looking at the scheduling in vacuum. The NHL (and its networks) work with the NBA so they avoid getting in each other's way.

2003:
May 27: Ducks/Devils G1, Mavericks/Spurs G5
May 29: Ducks/Devils G2, Mavericks/Spurs G6

Also an interesting scheduling year with the Nets/Devils both making their finals. I recall reading an article about the extra headache that caused for ABC in terms of setting up.

2004:
May 25: Flames/Lightning G1, Timberwolves/Lakers G3
May 27: Flames/Lightning G2, Timberwolves/Lakers G4
May 29: Flames/Lightning G3, Timberwolves/Lakers G5
May 31: Flames/Lightning G4, Timberwolves/Lakers G6

2009:
May 30: Penguins/Wings G1, Cavs/Magic G6
May 31: Penguins/Wings G2

I forget why (arena conflict?), but having those first two games go back-to-back was a bit peculiar.

2011:
May 31: Mavs/Heat G1
June 1: Bruins/Canucks G1

Seemingly a year where the NHL tried to avoid an overlap with the NBA.

2019:
May 27: Blues/Bruins G1; Bucks/Raptors G7 would have been that night but Raptors won in 6
May 29: Blues/Bruins G2
May 30: Warriors/Raptors G1

Sometimes its hard to point this out (especially on a hockey message board and/or to Canadians) that the average American viewer would choose an NBA game over the NHL. In past years, we'd occasionally see an overlaps between an NBA Conference Finals game and the start of the Stanley Cup. 2010 Chicago/Philadelphia Game 1 drew ~4.4 million viewers while Game 2 had ~5.9 million. Would it shock you if I told you that Game 1 went up against an NBA game while Game 2 was unopposed? Similarly 2016 San Jose/Pittsburgh Game 1 drew noticeably fewer viewers than the years before/after. That also went head-to-head with an NBA Game 7.

If you're the network, you might be concerned that 25% of the SCF audience goes away if there's an NBA game. They're understandably going to want to maximize the number of eyeballs. And they're probably safe in assuming that a passionate fan complaining about the schedule will still watch.

The days of the NHL risking having 2 or 3 of the Cup Finals games overlap with the NBA Conference Finals are over.

It's also tougher this year since ABC has the NHL and NBA Finals. They obviously wouldn't want an overlap nor would want a weekend doubleheader which would force one of the games out of prime time.

To be fair, most Americans are ignorant people in general, so pandering to their understanding doesn't leave much. It's basically guns, tits, and football.

Just enough time off between games for everybody in the world to forget that there's a stanley cup finals going on after g2

Will each game start at 8pm like the NHL site says?

Nhl season needs to be done by june 1st. If it goes 7 its only a few days until the draft. There should be a little breather for the teams that make the finals
