WJC: Standouts of the tournament so far

I don't remember seeing Hirvonen get a lot of hype before the tournament.
Niemelä has definitely been disappointing.
Hirvonen started really well, but honestly his trajectory has been downwards the more the tournament has been going on. And especially against Canada he was even bad. Being smallish and not the best skater seems to make him have a bit of trouble against the really good teams.

I can’t say that I have have been as impressed with his play as some other Finns seem to have been here. I mean after the great start that he had. But at least the only really bad game he had was against Canada.

Some guys I was surprised looked so good:

-Ridly Grieg: Has looked awesome all tournament. Has a good combination of physicality and skill.

-Carter Mazur: Versatile forward with a good two-way game, finishing ability, and physicality. He was definitely under the radar and preformed great.

-Aatu Raty: I thought he has been Finland’s best player. It’s easy to see the offensive abilities of Kemell and Jarventie, but Raty does it all. I love his game.

-Wyatt Kaiser: Obviously Luke Hughes is, rightfully so, going to be the biggest standout on Team USA. But, I really like the tools Kaiser has. I thought he looked really good all tournament. Him and Brock Faber look like they can be top 4 D to me.

-Jiri Kulich: He’s been great all tournament and he’s a young 18. He is a huge part of that Czech team and has looked great.

-Jack Thompson: Just a solid right handed puck moving defenseman. I think he’s been great all tournament and I think he’s going to be steal as a 3rd rounder.

Well, at least for me clearly the best defenceman of the tournament so far. And has been a surprise for me. I didn’t expect him to be this good.
He has been good, though he hasn’t been carrying his team like Andrae has. I also don’t think he’s been quite as dynamic as Luke “One Leg” Hughes, but possibly the next best dman after that.

When a player gets hyped the way Hirovnen was pre-tournament (you can thank Leafs fans for that) I expect an MVP like performance.
Both Toronto Finns players have been disappointing in my opinion.
You think Hirvonen got hyped pre-tournament? What? There was practically no talk of him.

Niemelä's been disappointing, sure. Hirvonen's been one of Finland's best.

Othmann, and he will never get any love by a majority of people up North because he "doesn't play like a good ol' flashy Canadian boy". Still early to say but in a re-draft Othmann slides into the top-10 and there really shouldn't be any debate. Drury's first draft pick too
What the hell does this mean? He has looked great in my opinion. However your original statement is asinine.

Even more than usual it’s hard to make much of this tournament. You can tell most players are 1-2 months away from gameshape. Final games will be interesting to see if competition heats up and players start to get comfortable, but overall I consider this tournament a forgettable failure.

I think a chart like this (if it’s legit) proves my point. He’s gotten a lot of chances for himself and his teammates yet there Isn’t much production because of it. puck hog
He leads the team by a huge margin in primary assist generation. How is that being a "puck hog"? And how's it his fault if his linemates don't bury the scoring chances he generates? If you think his production's been poor(it hasn't).

One thing that chart also shows is that Aatu Räty's performance's getting overrated.

For Sweden, only standouts (performing better than expected)

- Emil Andrae
- Grinders Åke Stakkestad, Oskar Magnusson

Everyone else has done what has been expected from them, or less than so

That’s why we watch games and don’t look at charts.

Charts don’t tell the whole story…

Ill reply saying its getting underrated by this chart. His play has been subtly so good, his hands have been on display with sweet feeds or pass reception, showed good ish speed(wanna ser what one more year does) and his puck support is constant. Id like him to be more instinctive as he’s a bery calculated player, more shooting or gettinn opened for shots would make him more dangerous. Kemell has been very noticeable but immature in my eyes in his play/shot selection. Still great tournament and makes me want to see more! Overall though i loved what raty showed and i think if the isles work well with him he coule be a good nhl’er

From Anaheim.

McTavish has been MVP quality, granted for as good as hes been/stats have been there have been chunks of games where he wasnt very good at all.

Meh he was playing meaningful hockey a few weeks before camp while everyone else has been in offseason mode forever now. And even as you acknowledge he still has had some very mediocre stretches. I think it's expected he comes out hot before players got their game legs under them
