So to keep track of results today

Boston does their job getting a bit of a testy 3-2 against Pittsburgh. The Stadium Series ends in not OT in favor of the Jackets in what is the absolute best outcome for pretty much everybody trying to run those teams down for a wild card spot. The Jackets now have a 4 point cushion on Ottawa and Boston

In games that matter to the overall picture but not really as much to the Bruins; the Islanders won earlier this afternoon (jesus Preds how do you give up 7 goals to THAT?) and Montreal beats Buffalo 4-2 to pull within a point of Boston with a game in hand

Important games for 03/02/2025

Minnesota at Boston; no shit sherlock, a Bruins win here means they pull even in points with the Wings. However, due to Detroit's ROW advantage, the Bruins can not pass them tomorrow.

Nashville at New York (R); A Rangers win and a Bruins loss means they leapfrog both them and the Sens due to the ROW advantage

Don’t think there catching Columbus dogfight for the last spot with 5-6 teams.

Most of the foes have difficult schedules coming up. I wouldn't be shocked if Ottawa and Boston stole both wild card spots.

Edit: sad seeing the Bruins listed as an "easiest" opponent. :laugh:

Given Boston's traditionally good ratings in national broadcasts, etc., if you're a conspiracy theorist who thinks that Uncle Gary cooks the lottery each year, if we stay in the lottery, good chance we could take home the #1 overall and expedite the rebuild

If you go to the standings and use the points percentage (P %) the Bruins true standings show they are tied for 9th from the bottom with Utah. Bruins have a difficult schedule going forward starting with todays loss.

So today was pretty much a worst case scenario. Bruins lose (after an admittedly solid effort, especially coming off a B2B) and the Rangers unsurprisingly stomped the Preds. All the ground they could have gained on Detroit has been flipped into a chance for the Wings to put distance between them tuesday night and the other teams to move;

Important games for today, 03/03/2025

Sabres @ Canadiens: Montreal has a chance to deal Boston a body blow here. A win puts them up a point on the Bruins with a game in hand

Senators @ Capitals: Probably the least likely to be problematic given how awful Ottawa has been in their last 10, but still, a win by them here is very much not ideal

Rangers @ Islanders: A rare double whammy situation for the Bruins. The Rangers already jumped them by virtue of ROW, passed them. A win here puts them two points up with a game in hand. Even if the Rangers do happen to lose this game given it is a second half of a B2B for them, an Islanders win means they pull within a point of Boston with two games in hand

I would honestly probably say the season ends if all 3 of these results go the wrong way. Boston would then be faced with a scenario of having to leap frog 5 teams to get to the final wild card, all of whom have more ROW AND also have games in hand.

At that point you'd be looking at one of those wild scenarios you see at the end of an NFL season where X team needs a 3 teams to lose, a win here and then for a team to tie as three wolves bark at the moon. Those almost never play out.

Time to start the tank. 7th position in the draft is very achievable. "Trade me right effing now." -- Denis Lemieux (Goalie in Slapshot).
