I like Stamkos and hope he does well as he heads closer to retirement. He's pretty much a slam-dunk Hall of Famer thanks to his peak seasons, his goals totals, and his two (okay, more like one) Cups (despite some 'iffy' playoffs).

He is also clearly not worth half of his current contact. But, he just as clearly chose money over fidelity to the club that drafted and developed him (and stuck with him through injuries). So, I can't say I feel too bad for him if he gets stuck at League-bottom while with Nashville.

Why are you blaming Brisebois when Stamkos is the one who priced himself out of Tampa?
Rumors were Stammer was willing to take 4-5mil per,I don't think that's really pricing himself out.

And JBB is catching heat and blame for how he handled it including the summer before.

He treated this fanbase and Stamkos like we are all stupid. One of my fellow fans summed it up perfectly earlier in the thread.

He reimbursed Tampa's loyalty with two Stanley Cup wins, three finals appearances and more overall success and popularity than the team had seen in well over a decade.

He didn't chose money over fidelity. He felt justifiably snubbed when not only had Brisebois not even spoken to him at all prior to this past off season but when he openly offered to take a 50% discount, that still wasn't enough. Tampa countered with an insulting 3Mx8yrs.

That just more like feels pushing the same problem into the future instead of dealing with it in the presence

They gave Guentzel a 7 year deal and we are on year 1
Of course, but Guentzel's last years won't matter as Tampa has no prospect pool and will be tanking at that time after Kucherov is out of his prime and others are getting old. They just didn't want to see Stamkos getting old and wasting rest of the Kucherovs and Points prime by not giving them good players to play with.

Oh okay, if that's true, I was not aware that he had offered Tampa a 50% discount. That changes the story a bit, sure.

On the other hand, $3 mill x 8 years isn't chump-change, considering that Stamkos is 34. That deal would put him at age 42 (probably retired, gassed, or ineffective) by its end. I would tend to think that Tampa would have offered it incrementally, as in 4 or 5 million the first couple of years, and then decreasing afterwards. Which would strike me as very reasonable.

Stamkos was PPG last year, even if he got half his points on the PP that's still a great return. He was over PPG in the playoffs last year too.

He's not cooked, he's just not working out as well as intended on a team that is not working out as well as intended. It's unlikely he's dropped off.

fans are irrational and can move on from a captain or fan favorite very quickly

Good on Tampa
I’d tell my GM to have that mindset.
Not every team can do this. You have be a winner in an active or just closed cup winning window.

Some teams would lose too much support doing this ( even if it was the right move)

Because this is not what happened? Unless you think asking way below his market value is pricing himself out.
The post I responded to painted Brisebois as an ass for not signing Stamkos.

Stamkos knew what Tampa was willing to do and he went for the money. Nothing wrong with that but Brisebois did the right thing for the franchise by not giving Stamkos what he wanted.

It takes two to tango is my point. I'll never begrudge a player going for money, their careers are short; but the GM has to think longterm.

9M cap hit vs 8 cap hit. Who cares about the reported ask from Tampa ?
If you're bringing up Guentzel in a Stamkos thread, isn't it logical to look at Tampa's perspective? Otherwise was there any interest from Guentzel to sign with Nashville?

Guentzel is largely seen as the replacement high end forward for Stamkos in Tampa and much of this thread has been people saying Tampa was wise to move on from Stamkos. My point is, it's not so cut and dry because a lot of people overlook that they would have come at very different costs to Tampa.

The person you responded to did not say this. Tampa fans have repeatedly stated that they do not begrudge Brisebois for not signing Stamkos, the issue we have is how he never intended to. His actions, and what he said to the media, never lined up.

The previous summer, when he was eligible to be extended, JBB made no attempt to sign him. Essentially every key member of the team we extend the summer before they reach free agency, we do this to avoid drama at the end, for instance we extended Hedman as soon as we were able to. This pushed Stamkos to finally say something about it to the media, since he didn't want to quietly be pushed aside and wanted to stay. JBB's response:

The problem I have with this response from JBB is he's implying that he has no role in the decision making process, the pieces fall where they fall and he's just a facilitator. He says a lot of nice things about Stamkos, but doesn't address the WHY as to not tabling an offer to Stamkos, while his peers get offers.

Then, on completion of the season

20 days after making this statement, Brisebois traded for McDonagh, eliminating all but about ~3m in cap space. JBB continued to act like we would keep Stamkos.

Again, the problem I have is that JBB completely glosses over his role as being the decision maker. He didn't accidentally trade for McDonagh and have no cap space, he has a deterministic opinion of Stamkos's worth and was handcuffing his ability to sign him. At this point in time one can reason that JBB thinks Stamkos is worth ~3m per year, and the rumors of him offering that but turning down a 4m aav counter offer from Stamkos seem very accurate.

So, at the end of the day Lightning fans aren't mad that JBB let Stamkos walk, we are mad that he had such a low opinion of him(while praising him in public) that he thought he was only worth ~3m per year. Stamkos still had 40g and was a ppg, but we let him walk because Stamkos needed more than 3m to stay and JBB wasn't budging. The lack of transparency makes the entire process feel really underhanded and deceptive.

Stamkos and Marchessault are starting to look better after our idiot coach finally listened after Marchy publicly called him out for the line blender bullshit.

Preds had the cap space and took a chance. Gave the fanbase something to be excited about. If we had a coach that wasn't a moron this deal wouldn't look nearly as bad, and if he keeps playing like he has the last 5 games it won't look that bad even this year.

Just want to note that this poster doesn't speak for all Tampa fans. I was fine with him leaving even before I knew Guentzel was the replacement.

Well, I haven't ever claimed I do or do not speak for all of our fans lmao.

I'm not sure why you would think this note is needed or warranted.
Guy is asking for perspective of Tampa fans. You give your perspective (and it's fine that you did so). I was adding additional context that a subset of fans were fine with him walking.
