He's been cooked for a while and was purely a PP merchant for the last couple seasons in TB.

People paying attention knew this was a bad signing, and that Brisebois was absolutely correct to move on.

Sometimes it takes time to get acquainted with a new environment. Joe Pavelski had a pretty rough first season in Dallas but eventually figured it out. I suspect the same will happen with Stamkos

Were they ever? I thought the consensus was that it was a shame to see a deal not get done, but the price he wanted didn't make sense for the impact he had on games.

They were for sure. Fans were really upset at how the team treated Stamkos more than not giving him that deal. They felt they could have worked something out to keep him.

Guentzel is on pace for 49 goals and 88 points.

Safe to say Tampa management knew what was up.
Opportunity to sign a great to elite player in his prime over one on the aging decline. Stamkos was never getting more than we offered with the opportunity to get Jake. Especially with the team they have they had to make a decision. Younger and better 5v5 was a good recipe for anyone and if vasi is more consistent when it means most they will be tough again in the playoffs. It sucks for stamkos because he's probably still best fit as far as production goes is on the Lightning with our pp setup and he's been a great captain for us he just wasnt getting the contract he got in Nashville in Tampa.

I guess what an NHL player does is a low bar for a big stink... but I'm not aware of some major reactiom Stamkos had.

There was far bigger reactions from Marchessault

Some athletes decline earlier than others throughout history of sports. It's always surprising or unexpected to some however.

Curious ... are Tampa fans still pissed off about losing Stamkos?
His ask was rumored at 4-5mil, we were apparently offering around 3. For 4ish mil I would love to still have his shot on this team and to keep the leader/face of the franchise around. No matter what, JBB handled the whole thing very poorly and I'll always be pissed about that.

It's been a little bit since I looked up the numbers but I believe it was about 40-45% of Stamkos' even strength time playing with Kucherov, so him being in on 11/21 ES goals isn't too surprising. And they were always on the PP together and that's where close to half of Stamkos total goals came from when looking at total goals.

Obviously playing with Kuch will give a boost to his numbers over other linemates, but my point was Stamkos ES points away from Kuch last year weren't nearly as bad as his numbers have been so far this season. I don't think he's regressed so much as it's a fact that he's going to struggle to produce on a struggling team because his one big asset is his shot.
I still don't agree with this. I'd love you to provide some numbers to back this up.

Kucherov was +8 last year and Stamkos was.... -21

That just more like feels pushing the same problem into the future instead of dealing with it in the presence

They gave Guentzel a 7 year deal and we are on year 1

I disagree with this title. sure he's cooked for 8m a season but if he signed for half that I think TB would have gladly extended him. can't blame Stammer for taking the money. still pretty early too, prob not a good idea to try and win through Free Agency. NSH just put together a bad team that;s aging out

I agree, his playing driving wouldn't necessarily look that much better on a good team...but the results would be much better on a good team. I am still hopeful if Bruno gets canned, we can put Stamkos in a position to be successful, but that hope is fading. He's getting older. This is the year we should be putting him in position to be successful, as with all the players, but unfortunately Bruno is unwavering on how he thinks the game should be played. The roster just isn't a good fit for the frantic up and down play he envisions.
I don't really have much hope for this even if Bruno gets canned. No coach is going to make the "hard" decision of playing him heavily sheltered, offensive zone only 3rd/4th line minutes at ES and then just load the PP time (he's been our 3rd highest TOI forward at ES, which is not a recipe for success).

Making him successful on the PP also likely means neutering our two best and most dynamic offensive players, Forsberg and Josi, so they can feed passes to the half wall shooting spot.

Just a poor fit and a terrible contract.

It’s pretty well established that Stamkos hasn’t been a play driver since the leg injury. He’s a shooter and still one of the best at that in the league. That means on a good team he’ll put up good numbers and on a bad team put up bad numbers. The whole Preds team has been awful this year, of course his numbers will look bad.
I think it goes even beyond a good team and bad team. He needs an elite of the elite playmaker.

Stamkos went on a heater after the TDL and got his 5v5 numbers somewhat respectable, away from Kuvherov. They were putrid before that. I don't know that he has many of those heaters left in the tank.

In a year or two Tampa could suggest to take Stammer back with retained half of price. With the salary cap going higher that could be an option and the team could allow that. And TBL knows how to utilize his strengths.

Looks like a cheat code - to use other team’s cap to get your player some extra 💰💰💰

I feel like there’s something right in it - to get your franchise player back. Stammer belongs to Tampa and it feels right for him to retire as a bolt.

As for why would it work - Eller is a perfect example - once he returned to WSH, everything started clicking right away, like you put a piece in a puzzle or a gear in the clock mechanism.
