..you bumped the thread to say this? You can interview a black person and still be racist, for the record, but the bigger thing is- what are you talking about? There’s no crowd calling them racist or sexist, I’ve never heard a single person say that. I don’t really think Whit gets it, personally, but I also don’t see him as racist/sexist. Some people don’t like Barstool, that’s different, but it’s weird to post what you posted against a crowd that doesn’t exist. Show me someone calling them those things, I’ll wait.
...do you have twitter? There is 100% a crowd that calls them racist/sexist, it's not hard to find. They also specifically complained about the number of people of colour and women interviewed on the show, and mentioned that after the George Floyd incident they did not have a person of colour on the show. Fair enough that this was on twitter, but if you've followed these threads you would have seen people complaining about the show as well. Also one of the first posts in this thread mentions them being disgusting misogynistic people.

Whit is the best part of the show.

I agree not liking Barstool is different, Portnoy is a shitty human being tbh.

Twitters a damn cesspool, you can find a group against anything on there. A lot is probably because of Portnoy. As to HF- I just don’t recall seeing those harsher labels used- I see the misogyny thing, “getting kills” can be labeled as such, but I also don’t think interviewing a woman negates that. Some of the stories can be seen as misogynistic imo, but I’d also never then just say “the show, all those guys- sexist.” It’s a bit more nuanced than that, I think. I also think those interviews are them trying to understand and do more, though, so in a way I’m glad you pointed it out.

And I don’t like Whit but unless I know him to be abhorrent, I’ll keep listening- and I do love his shtick sometimes. Said it before, it adds a nice tension/back-and-forth to the show.

Agree with your first statement, there is more nuance to it. I do find 'kill stories' to be a bit gross, but I also realize it's more them being a product of their environment and it has seemed like Biz has dialed them back over the duration of the podcast and is learning that his language matters, not just his intents.

I was more commenting on specific twitter threads complaining about their lack of interviewing people of colour or women and how they did both in one week, which I suppose is less relevant posting it on HF than on twitter, but I don't really post on twitter just read lol.

Noticed today that while Whit was born in 1983, he was never drafted in 2001 and waited a year. Seemed odd because he would go 5th overall the next year so he had to be on the radar even the year before, I presume.

& no, he doesn't have a late birthday.

College-committed players used to have to play a year of college before they entered the draft. They changed the rule in 2003, which contributed towards a stacked class, with '84 D.O.Bs like Parise and Kesler available in addition to '85s like Suter.

I getcha, good discussion- absolutely agreed on the stories and I feel like they’re definitely trying, and I might not have noticed that if you hadn’t been willing to explain your post.

I'm sort of souring on the show. I find their hockey analysis to be underwhelming. For example, the previews to all the playoff series was pathetic. They probably spent 3 minutes on each series. I don't know maybe I'm over-thinking it but to me it fell short.

On top of that, they lauded Marchessault's comments on instagram as 'hilarious'. They all thought 'suck on yo mamas titties' to an anonymous troll through an Instagram chat was hilariously clever. I found the whole situation funny - but it wasn't Marchessault that was funny, it was that some trolls riled up a pro athlete and had him acting like a complete tool. Anyways this poor sense of humor and the over-rated stories has me turning my attention to something different.

Heatley too also delayed being drafted

Here is your first problem, you are using twitter as your gauge for normal human behavior.

I have to say the show isn’t quite what it used to be. The days where Biz first got involved were great. Hilarious shit. Now it kind of seems like that they have a formula and just kind of home it in. It makes sense considering they got the pink Whitney brand and have built up enough of a following - really just all of Canada.
I find myself skipping a lot of the interviews now because they just shoot the shit. No dramatic or outrageous questions anymore. And they used to always ask players questions like who the hardest forward or defenseman to play agains was, who the best player they saw was, etc - things like that which was always awesome.
Now it’s 5 minutes talking about the current topics, and then just going to the interview - and that’s pretty much it.
Sad but it is what it is

I agree with the hockey commentary part. I was excited to hear Whit shit on the Isles and their fans for complaining about the Hart no-call and they didn't even watch it happen live or even look it up. RA said it was a delay of game over the glass.

That play was in OT for pete's sake!

Yup, he knew as a 4th line goon / occasional player he'd have to go go above and beyond to have a good post-NHL life. He obviously started with the jokes while he was still active and it helped him reach the level of popularity he has now.

I cannot stand him. By far the worst part of the podcast.
R A is the best part of the podcast in my opinion.

Now that you say that I am remembering that archaic rule. Makes sense.

I know theres a few people in this thread who like him but he just comes across as so unlikeable for me. Its like hes trying to hard to be one of the boys or something.

He's the most relatable to me. He also started the whole thing and is the brains behind the operation for whatever that's worth

RA and Biz are great but Whitney has been getting really annoying since hockey came back. He like screeches in episodes now when he tries to talk over people. Still listening but its getting harder. Maybe he cools off after the cup.

That's Grinelli to a tee. Even Whitney tries too hard at times. RA and Biz always seem genuine to me.

Eppy 292. RA lets a crappy pop tune roll for 30 seconds. When a classic tune is used in the into he usually cuts it off at 5 seconds. What gives RA?

I don't disagree, like I know their bread and butter is the interviews but even a little bit more research would be nice. It is a hockey podcast after all.

All the Grinell talk reminds me that I haaaaaaaate his hockey talk. Like he just sounds like he doesn't know anything about the league

Meh, it always feels like RA is trying to fit in with the guys who actually played the sport at a high level. I notice it mostly when it comes to the slang.
You're reading it wrong. RA is 20 years older than those guys. He was at Barstool 20 years ago with Portnoy when they were a Boston blog. He's totally genuine. He's just riding the wave now and good for him. He knows his stuff and does a good job.
