Those Zib numbers are simply market value. The Rangers have to decide if it’s a deadline trade or long term deal. Somebody WILL pay him that.
Is it?

Why is he worth THAT much more than Couturier for example

7 years, 9 million AAV or 8 years, 8.5 million. If Zibanejad wants the 8th year he needs to leave a little money on the table.

Full NMC the first 4 years, full NTC year 5, limited NTC years 6 to 8.

More than fair. Sign the contract and let's get to work. Don't have this hanging over the team's head during the season. Get it done before puck drop against Washington.

Some GM will give Zibanejad 7 years and $63 million. The Rangers are going to have to match that or come close, if they want to keep him.

I wouldn’t sign Mika till the last possible moment to see if he stays healthy. He may be one concussion away from having significant issues.

Maybe it’s a young mans fear but I could careless about worrying contracts 5 years from now. Worry about that crap then if and when you need to. This is the window. You pay Mika what he’s worth. First line centers don’t grow on trees

I'm a believer in the 'two window' theory, one now and one when the guys that are currently 20-23 are in their prime in five years.

So the ability to keep Fox, Kakko, Laf, Chytil, and all the other young guns when they are the veterans will be key. We will have to bite the bullet and give up some assets to move Kreider, Zib, Trouba, etc when their time has come.

I have zero problem paying guys like panarin and Mika big money because they are star players. Those aren’t the guys that hurt you because even as they tail off they’re still very good players. It’s paying the Brendan Smiths of the world that bite you in the ass.

I think the big concern people have is that Zibanejad may very well age like Brad Richards, in which case we will only be getting what we paid for maybe 3-4 years of the 8 he is signed for.

Name that someone

Minnesota, Boston, Seattle, Anaheim, Florida (if they lose Barkov), Vegas (they make cap moves to do whatever they want).

That's basically 25% of the league. Mix of contenders and up and coming teams. I'm not saying he'd sign with one of them, but they would make the offer.

We used Couturier as a comp when he signed. He'll be 29 in December and took 7/7.5. Could he have gotten more money on the open market? Most likely.

He took less to stay in a place he wanted to stay. Look at Boston, this is the mentality and approach you need from your front line guys to maintain sustained success.

I'm sure Mika loves New York....all things being equal.

brad Richards god love him could never skate. Wasn’t ever very big. Guys that can’t skate don’t age well. Guys like Mika they’re different he’ll still be a very good player

Minnesota won't have the cap space, Seattle is essentially a building team, Anaheim is a rebuilding team, Vegas has no cap space ever. Boston will most likely re-sign Bergeron and then have to pay out McAvoy. Florida will re-sign Barkov.

I think the other thing that's clear is that it is not just about money for Zib. Let's be realistic, he's not signing somewhere that isn't going to be a contender and isn't conducive to his lifestyle.

Richards was never a great skater. he was an average skater but defeinitely not a great skater that's no way true brother. there's a reason he was a third round pick. guys didn't think he would have enough skill and size to compensate for his skating. he proved them all wrong but sure enough he couldnt' skate by the time he got here really.
