Evan "Norris" Bouchard has been on fire this month
Standing up straight with his stick parallel to the ice just like in every other video. Notice that he doesn't care about a potential rebound or rechecking where #49 is.
That said, Ekholm could have prevented that goal if he kept skating.

And EB is being considered for the Canada team. Hard to see why when he plays defensively so poorly.

Guy clearly has some offensive gifts, and can play decent defense.
But man, is he ever present and responsible for some backbreakers at times. Like last year in the cup finals he gift wrapped us at least 2.

Funny enough watching the Panthers implode in games 4-6, my first thought was how good weegar would have been then.

Incidentally, Bouchard is good enough as a top-pairing for a team to win the Western Conference.
i wouldn't even call it awful defense. he checks out before toronto is close to gaining the puck.
Yea, I don't see either as abhorrent plays.
On the tying goal, Bouchard makes a well timed stick swipe, hits above the blade, gets a high percentage bounce, nifty skate tap, and circles behind. There is no Oiler up the right boards, so if he throws it up those boards he risks a quick transition back to the zone. He spots a forward on the left boards near the bench, hits the worst possibile spot of a leg, and it's a goal. Unlucky really. Throwing it up the right hand boards is a "foot off the gas" kinda play, something a plug Dman would do to protect a lead. That's not how this team is coached. That puck is 2 inches to the right and the Oiler forward is sprung on a partial. My issue here is that I think he should probably assume a change happening. which would mean go the plug route, but lift it high and drop it at the top of the Leaf zone circle. (Way easier said than done, but that's what we're doing here, right?)
As for the go ahead goal it's a nothing burger IMO.
- The puck takes the absolute perfect bounce to spring McMann.
- He has a teammate (Ekholm) in an awful position, but still way better than he could possibly create by "skating hard", and makes the most logical adjustment = if it's stopped or goes wide, where should I be to take possession/not fly the goal line leaving two Leafs alone in front?
- Bouchard has no angle to the player or puck, Ekholm has a low percentage play on McMann.
- Bouchard recognizes this, slows, and prepares to turn up ice in anticipation (which you see he does before the puck goes in) of a save put to the corner or a shot wide to that corner.
- *He probably also sees two Leafs skating past centre in front of any Oilers.
* Believe it or not, everyone in the nhl, ahl, echl, etc, processes the game at a level HF posters just can't understand. That includes Bouchard.
This certainly isn't a "controller disconnect" lol. It's a perfect deflection, springing McMann who is flying the zone.
Bottom line, Bouchard could have skated as fast as possible toward McMann and wouldn't possibly have had a play. If he did, and McMann doesn't bury it, then both Ekholm and Bouchard are behind the net and two Leafs are entering the zone all alone.
Hockey is a great sport. Watch it. Pay attention. There is a lot more happening away from the puck.

What? The second goal against? You mean the second goal scored by the Leafs?
If so, I don't get what you mean by "he checks out before toronto is close to gaining the puck." Bouchard is in good position for the play to the front. Gains possession. Makes a debatable decision on his transition pass (see my other post for my take) then it's a bang bang play and it's in the net. I don't see how he could have "checked out" less than a second after having possession.
There are so many more egregious plays by Bouchard to use as examples of his defensive shortcomings. Watch some Oiler games when they play other teams. Learn a bit more about hockey, and then post about how he sucks.

i am talking about the play where the puck goes by him at the offensive blue line and he casually turns the other way, while ekholm and mcmann race the other way for puck possession and toronto scores. buchard shows zero intent to engage in the play. i wouldn't qualify this as a bad defense. it's simply horrendous effort. if you qualify effort as an important ingredient to defensive ability than you are 100% correct.
Okay, I thought you were talking about the second goal against.
In my previous post I give my take on the third goal against. I don't see any way in which Bouchard can make a play on the third goal against. He recognizes that, and sets himself up to make a play if McMann misses the net or the goalie makes a save and directs it to the corner.
It looks like a lazy effort, I get that. If you look closer at the play you'll see that no one could close that gap and that skating hard after McMann would be useless and just put him out of position if McMann doesn't score.
It looks bad, sure, but it's the logical play. If he would have somehow anticipated the board bounce in the Leaf corner than he could have been in position to negate McManns exit. If he would have made the assumption of that bounce then he's playing the lowest percentage outcome and THAT would have been indicative of a poor defensive mind.
That's just how I see it. Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately he is not even doing that. They should change his shot name from the Bouch Bomb to the Bouch block. He can't seem to get any shots to the net this season so far.
