How was the second penalty legit? she was getting caught from behind and fell over when the US defender got close. The US player MAY have touched her jersey, but that is all... Certainly not enough to knock her over.

Additionally, that is the first ever cross check from behind, that has caused the player to fall down BACKWARDS!

really? she kicked her foot, come on. calling it a cross check? but it was tripping whether she meant to or not.

Still, the penalty calls were pretty slanted. What did they end up being? like 8-2? with our second one lasting all of 5 seconds before "The Slash"
yeah the reffing seemed terrible.
She did not "trip" her....she just freaking fell down. She played the ref. The ref sucked, so a penalty was called.

It was NOT A PENALTY!

you must be listening to it on the radio.

Yeah I'm not sure Wickenheiser was touched on her breakaway in OT. Penalty minutes were 14-10 USA, but calls were inconsistent, and OT was a joke. I wouldn't have called any of the penalties on either team. Canada earned the comeback and may very well have won it in OT, but it's a damn shame that such an entertaining game was decided by refereeing.

This. Yay for everyone on the internet/Twitter congratulating Team Canada and saying all the warm fuzzy things about what a great game it was. IMO, this was the worst outcome possible, not because the USA lost, but because the game wasn't decided by the players.

The CDN penalty was certainly legit, you can't bowl someone over in women's hockey. The breakaway penalty was definitely correct. She wasn't going down on her own, and whether you're "battling" or not, the contact from behind caused the player to fall. I don't think it matters whether feet get tangled or what have you...if you're beaten, the onus is on you to make a clean play.

The slash I didn't or haven't seen. But it sounds suspiciously bad.

You guys seriously think that? Lol. No wonder eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable. Watch the US player's right skate coming down on the CDN player's right skate. Nah. No contact there.

Also, on Page 34 of the game thread on the main board, there's another picture from a different angle that is pretty definitive.

I'm not going any farther if you guys are going to be such obvious trolls. Obviously a great game, heartbreaking for the US women. Sucks that fans such as yourself take losses so badly.

Right, because wanting to discuss a less than conclusive game-deciding penalty is "taking a loss so badly". That's even completely disregarding the call, which was a cross-check, which didn't even happen. Is it really a stretch to say the referees botched a call in this game?

For reference, here is the picture S1C2 was talking about:

But you can clearly see in the gif that it was Knight's skate that was on the outside, not Wickenheiser's. This is why pictures can lie.

1. Incidental skate to skate contact is not a penalty.
2. That was clearly not a cross check.
3. While falling down, there is no earthly way that Knight had both the mental AND physical wherewithal to both decide AND execute to intentionally place her skate in such a way so that the Canadian player would fall down as well.
4. Furthermore, even if you want to assert that it IS possible for her to have done so, look at her eyes and arms/hands. She is CLEARLY trying to make a clean stick play.
5. Therefore, at best, this is incidental skate to skate contact that occurred as the result of two players each trying to make a stick/puck play. No penalty should have been called.
