Soccer / Football Thread Part Seven

I knew he would shine against Madrid. This is the type of game and type of opponent he's made for. But I did not expect him to score two world class free kicks David Beckham would be proud of.

Aha… yeah two pure class goals… like omg goals. You guys are looking good going to Madrid. Could have been more but Cortois made some nice saves. Rice bossed that midfield outside of his goals. Great match for him

Madrid will go for it in the 2nd leg, but now they'll be missing another midfielder in Camavinga. And we always do well against teams that attack anyway. I'm pretty confident.

They sure looked good today

Best 8 in the world
Always saw him more as a 6 because he's just so good at winning balls, but with Zubimendi joining next season it seems 8 is Rice's position now.

He might genuinely be the best set piece player in the world right now. His corners have been brilliant for a while now and now he scored two of the best free kicks I've ever seen. He really is the new Beckham in that regard.

We win every time teams don't double Saka. He's too dominant 1 on 1. Created both of the set pieces that Rice scored on.
Palmer and Foden are getting all the hype, but honestly, Saka is twice the player those two are. He's elite and he will be the best RW in the league once Salah is gone.

By the end of this second leg, you may be a former BvB fan.
Nah, jokes aside this was pretty much what I expected. It sucks but I'm not really upset.

The team is basically just holding on until the offseason and praying to get the last UCL spot in the bundesliga (5 points back, so not impossible). If even half the rumors are correct there's going to be tons of changes to the team (including multiple big names), probably a new coach, and maybe even a new sporting director.

To make me a "former fan" they'd need to go the Flyers route and do literally everything wrong, while showing stunning levels of arrogance and disdain for their fans, and give me absolutely zero hope they'll ever figure out what they're doing wrong. BVB obviously makes lots of mistakes and they'll never be a big spender that's a favorite for their league or UCL, but at least they seem to react when things go wrong and attempt to make improvements. Just like during all those Hextall years, I can tolerate the bad so long as there's a reason for hope and some type of plan. There's enough quality on this roster to keep me hopeful that a quick turnaround is possible.

Former fan…… isn’t this only your second full season as a real fan? Buckle up

There are very few clubs who go through such a dramatic and elongated period of "bad" relative to expectations, because fan voices are heard much more prominently in Europe. It doesnt mean it doesnt happen - there are a few pretty prominent exampels actually - but for the most part, teams will always eventually "balance out" to their mean. I imagine BVB will do the same. You just have have a period where a lot of other German teams are also playing well, which hasnt been the case in recent history, necessarily.
