So why is it impossible to catch Boston?

The problem now for the Leafs may be staying focused (though that clearly wasn't an issue Sunday).

I don't think home ice vs. TB is going to be a huge rallying cry in the locker room before each game down the stretch, and no one below the Bolts has a realistic shot of catching them.

It does seem like it will be a tough task sloughing out the rest of the season knowing it's almost impossible to catch Boston but also almost impossible not to make the playoffs. Not a lot of incentive to give their best effort. Now that I type that, it's not ideal at all. At least Tampa's in the same boat.

Just for fun:

Leafs have 31 games left. To this point, they have just under a 69% points percentage. Let's say they up that to 75% for the remaining games (which would be insane BTW), they would end with 116 points.

Boston needs 35 points to reach 116 with 32 games to go.

So unless you think Boston is going .500 for the rest of the season plus Toronto will play lights out, it ain't happening. It's very hard to make up 11 points in 31 games. It seems possible at first glance but it's almost impossible. The entire purpose now is to see who has home ice vs. Tampa and I'm not even sure that makes any difference compared to the clear psychological issue with closing a series the team needs to overcome.
Looking at it that way it's certainly a daunting task, but you can look at it from another perspective which makes it more palatable

Leafs have 2 games left versus Boston. They must win both in regulation. That gives them 4 points and cuts the Bruins lead to 7 points

Now, Leafs have an easy schedule coming out of AS break (CBJ x2, CHI x2, MON). They need to win all 5. If Boston fumbles a bit and go 3-2-0 you make up another 4 points. Now the lead is down to 3 points. You need to outplay them by 3 points the rest of the way

It's certainly unlikely, but there is a chance here. The Leafs throwing away games against inferior opponents is the main reason we're so far back, otherwise we'd be in striking range right now smh

Your last 2 paragraphs contradict each other.

On 1 hand you’re saying we have an easy schedule coming out of the break against basement dwelling teams and then in the next breath you’re saying that the Leafs throw away points against inferior teams.

He was referring to the past, doesn't mean we have to keep doing it.

Like @Gary Nylund mentioned, I was discussing the past. The only reason we need to go on a 5-0-0 run while hoping Boston struggles a bit is because we threw away the easier games. The 2 losses to MTL, Arizona, the OTL to the ducks etc. You win even half of those and catching Boston is a lot more feasible

Nonetheless, going 5-0-0 after the all star break should be more than achievable. CBJ/Chicago are absolute tirefires

I would hope their bloated contracts would be enough incentive but it’s not

Reaching anyone at this point don't mean shit. We're gonna make the 1st round. That's when everything gets real.

Agree its mostly pointless chase now, but you dont want to lose your way into the playoffs.. I'll bet my money on wildcard winning their way in over a team that lost last ten but kept playoff spot.

I get that motivation is low, how about pretending you are fine-tuning your team for the Cup run?

Playing one of the WC teams would be preferable to another 7 gamer vs the Lightning.

Although playing the Sabres would terrify me

I said I wouldn't be surprised if they beat Washington 5-2 it turned out to be 5-1

Let's see how Boston goes.

If the Leafs can still catch Boston, I can still catch Jessica Biel....dare to dream!!

They such a sucka ass good tough team. They hard. We gotta get mo thugs and hitters people who give a dirt. Hardness. Then we will talk even more with simmonds and bunting and sparkle our team even more.

Focus on 2nd place, find time to rest the vets and the goalies, and mentally and physically prepare to pound Tampa every shift.
