So why is it impossible to catch Boston?

Historic season by them so far no doubt.

In 1970-71, the Bruins had one the greatest seasons in modern league history. They lost in the first round.

When your record goes back to 0-0 as it always does at the start of the playoffs, anything can happen
Good point. :)

And while it does seem improbable that Murray/Samsonov will "pull a Ken Dryden", it's certainly not out of the question.

Boston has to lose a game for us to get any closer

In a bad stretch they lose 2 out of a dozen

They're not locked into who they're playing. Realistically that only applies to the 2/3 matchup this early. And every other 2/3 matchup is still very much undecided. Its uniquely a Toronto/Tampa situation.
Agreed it’s unique but that doesn’t give them an excuse to fail to show up as often as they do. What about the fans that pay big money to see their best…….sucks to be them I guess when multi millionaires fail to put in their best…….

It's impossible because they rarely lose and haven't had a single schneid the entire season. Just accept we won't catch them and focus on clinching home ice against Tampa, our known playoff opponent months before the end of the season. What a league.

If Boston gets 35 points in their remaining 35 games = 115 wouldnt the Leafs would have to increase their points percentage to catch them.

Not impossible and not likely.

Just get in, shouldn’t matter who they play. If they are as good a team as we think they are, it should take care of itself

because squandering points against bottom feeders was not a good idea and catching boston is almost an impossibility

that said,

catching boston means competing for presidents trophy. Given the modern trend; I'd prefer not to win the president's trophy. Goal should be playoff results

Unless the B's go into a huge tailspin, and I mean huge as in a 8-14-3 over the next 25 would mean the Leafs would have to go 16-7-2. Not bad numbers and no reason the Leafs couldn't do it, it is pretty much how the year is going. What seems unlikely is Bruins going through that kind of run. The other thing is it still gives them lots of time to take back the lead and home ice all through the tournament.

The current format is idiotic, it literally is designed to eliminate top teams right off the bat.
Much better option would be to save the high profile/heavyweight tilts for the semifinals where they belong.

Teams should be rewarded with easier matchups for finishing higher in the standings, and teams that sneak in should get the tougher matchups.
They should be but according to The BettMan this is what the fans want to see, that reasoning also gave us a skills competition to decide game outcome and therefore the standings. That for those paying attention gave Tampa Bay a easy path to a SC Berth years ago when they won 11 shootouts and a home ice seeding in the playoffs

History of Boston vs Coyotes 19-3-1

History of Toronto vs Coyotes 6-14-1

Not really losing the exact same
Boston has nine losses on the year. Two to the Sens, once to the aforementioned Yotes one to the panthers and one to Buffalo. All teams that are terrible or struggling.

We lost too many games that don't matter to catch Boston.

So Tampa it is. Only question is do we start at home or on the road?

You're quite correct but it doesn't support the NHL is out to get us storyline.

We have nineteen. That's why we're not likely to catch them.

Will be fairly amusing if Ullmarks inevitable cool down starts to happen the closer we get to the playoffs. Regardless though, it's very improbable the Leafs will be able to catch them before the end of the season. Leafs will be playing Tampa

A great example of how the current playoff system is awful. Half the playoff bound teams have nothing to play for by midseason

IMO if we could ever overcome beating bottom dwellers with this schedule it could shake the monkey off the camels back and get us over the hump.

Anybody else see us over taking Boston or at least making it closer than what most think right now?

Yes- the NHL could be renamed and they could call it "GOALIE"

I dunno I just feel we can up our game and beat bottom dwellers at crucial points to give it a go and slide past those nasty Boooooins
Give us Bergeron and kejci @ 3.5 mil combined instead Kerfoot.

We would be incredible to

to answer your question,
because it's so highly unlikely to happen in terms of odds, that it registers as "impossible".

Which is always "possible" . . . but like, Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber, ..."so you're saying I have a chance ... !!!"

Boston is about to break the nhl record. You burnout trying to catch, get a crappy draft pick and play TB anyways. Doesn’t matter who we play.

I honestly don't care where you finish in the regular season. Just make the playoffs. Better team in the playoffs usually wins.
