So, *why* is Alex Mogilny not in the HHOF?

This question came up today on Chris nilan's podcast.

Nilan was asking serge savard why mogilny isn't in.

Savard used to be on the selection team, and he said that every player needs a "promoter". Someone on the selection team really needs to vouch for the player.

Serge mentioned when it came to the soviets, he was making the cases for kharlamov, and yakushev. Both of them got in, although it took much longer for yakushev.

I'm sure none of this is groundbreaking news but it's the first time I've heard of someone from the selection committee flat out tell it like it is.

The way he explained it, it almost sounds like a war room where scouts are trying to convince management of a guy they really ought to be drafting.

Here's Mogilny's hat-trick against Canada in the '89 World Juniors.

I love Canadian world juniors commentators lol, this color guy is like the great Mike Haynes in terms of homerism but without his charm lol

absolutely beautiful goals man could this guy shoot so nicely while in stride

Oh God, this explains a lot.

Assuming Gretzky has everyone's ear (which he must), it's only a matter of time before Marty McSorley is in.

Yeah, let's build upon the amazingly well received Housley induction and add the one defensemen who could rival him in defensive ineptitude throughout half his career while not being even outstanding offensively. Ugh nopls.
Well “half” is a key word. Gonchar became a better defender in Pittsburgh and was absolutely a big part of those back-to-back SC finals’ teams.

Also, I said “better case” not “has to be inducted”, although with recent inductees setting the standard …

His second goal was impressive.
He was a Datsyuk before Datsyuk.

Funny how things change. A while ago there was a thread asking if a single play could keep someone out of the Hall. I brought up Gonchar getting turnstiled by Travis Moen, with the caveat that I didn't think he was overly close anyway. And now he's getting brought up in these threads semi-regularly.

At least we can say that McSorley's One Play was a lot more embarrassing than Gonchar's.
