So... What Was With All The Hatred And Derision Toward The Tanev Signing?

The only thing Tanev does exceptionally well is block shots.

The whole "physical defenseman" thing was way overblown. As it always is with the hype around this team. And I guess he's pretty good at screening his own goalie.

Otherwise Tanev looks to be about average.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. At least he's earning his salary. Unlike a few other players on this team.

The problem is that Tanev's the 1RHD.

When really he's only a middle pairing defenseman. They need someone more dynamic to be manning that position. Preferably someone younger who can excel at the transition game as well as make plays in his own end.

Just blocking shots isn't good enough.

Rielly's a good hockey player.

He's in over his head though. They need someone better than Rielly to push everyone down a spot. Right now they're all playing above their pay grades.

That includes both Rielly and Tanev.

The guy is a stud - but he's 34, it's a long contract, and it's not a matter of if it will become a bad contract, it's when.

Tanev has a very good argument for being the best defensive defensemen in the NHL. He just had a playoff run where he shutdown Mackinnon and Eichel at 5v5, neutering two of the better playoff producers in the game. He doesn't just "block shots", that simplifies his game way too much

On top of that he can handle the puck extremely well and is one of our best defensemen in terms of clean zone exists

He is easily a top pairing defensemen. There are not 64 defensemen in this league better than Chris Tanev

He's not really the 1RHD. He's 4th on the team in ice time. Has been around the 19-20 minute mark in recent seasons.

tanev is a goalies best friend. quietly leading the league in blocked shots, rarely makes a mistake, and is it just me or does he actually move the puck up the ice very well?

Yes, his skating and puck movement were a nice surprise for me too.
