At some point, things have to change for us. We have been an embarrassment for a good percentage of our history, but that has changed when Viola took over, and even more so when he decided to get out of the way, and let the experts do their thing. It’s happened to so many other organizations over the years, so why can it not with us?

I posted the next paragraph in the Stanley Cup sub-forum:

Don’t know where this inexperience is with the Panthers. The young core (Barkov, Huberdeau, Ekblad) gained valuable experience early on in a terribly officiated series against the Islanders in 2016, and again in the play-ins a couple of seasons ago. They added players with Cup rings, others who have had lengthened playoff runs, and overall playoff experience, then had their tough series against the Lightning last playoffs. They aren’t new to this, nor are they naive. They know what it takes to get it done, and I believe what happened against the Bolts last season, fueled the team this season.

I understand the skepticism. The wait and see approach. But this team is different. We aren’t a fluke. We aren’t a gimmick team. We don’t need the stars aligned in order for us to win. We aren’t Panthers teams of the past, where we had to rely on long, unsustainable winning streaks just to get us in to the playoff chase. We were the best team in the league. We were the highest scoring team in the past 20+ years. We are deep. We are talented. And I believed they are smart enough to realize what needs to be done. And this playoffs, we will have our best Dman back as well. Which is pretty much like a trade deadline acquisition, only with familiarity with the team.

No team is entering these playoffs flawless. All have question marks. What we need to be is smart away from the puck, play simple hockey in our own zone, and we need one of Bob or Spencer to give us above average goaltending. We don’t need spectacular goaltending for us to win, although it would be nice. We need timely saves and mental lapses kept to a minimum, that’s it. Scoring goes down in the playoffs, but we are too deep for it to happen to us in a major way. If we can get that timely goaltending, which I believe we will get, we will be the hardest out for any team that will have to face us in these playoffs.

And enough of this shit about our past, especially from you @batting1k :sarcasm: . We’ve been through a lot on these boards, along with others as well. I’ve been through it longer here than a lot of members. And I was also a season ticket holder from 99-07, so I lived through our futility live, 41 times a year. We aren’t those teams. We aren’t the Panthers of 95-97, or the 2000s, or pre-Viola ones in the 2010s. Our past has ZERO relevance with what we do tomorrow night. These are the “real” Panthers, @Mogo. Those past tense teams, players, owners, GMs, etc. have zero control, mentally or physically, over this current team. And we aren’t the Maple Leafs either. I’m tired of that comparison. We are just entering our playoff prime, while they have stumbled theirs away multiple times. I believe this core are players built for the playoffs, and we will see that this playoffs.

Amen. Love ya.

Not Toronto
LFG cats!

Since I've joined the bandwagon, I have seen some tenacity and incredible 3rd period turnarounds. That quality in particular is what impresses me, and is what I believe will keep them in it. You're gonna fall behind at times, but the never say die attitude and confidence is key.

Bob and knight have been solid at times, so assuming the team supports and buckles down around them, they've got as good a shot as any. Anxious to see how they come out for game 1

Weegar Ekblad has been one of the best pairings in the NHL for 2 years now. No need to break that up. Only reason that should change is if the bottom pairing is a liability and we need to split up the top pairing to balance things out

Chiarot is not very good. Not sure why we’d want 25 minutes a game of that
Because 25 minutes a game of that helped take a team to the stanley cup final last year......I think last years panther d was one of the most porous in the playoffs.. That's why.

Love that we have our best lineup to start the playoffs.

Let’s go!

Score first and then increase the lead. Dominate!

It’s only 3-0 who cares
The game started just how this series has started, on the wrong foot. Didn’t feel right from the get go.

I feel totally deflated this morning about it, but the only silver lining I can come up with to give me a sense of hope is that the veteran guys like Jumbo and Horny are talking to the boys and cheering them up and nobody is panicking and reminding them how talented we really are. But also, that talent alone doesn’t win in the playoffs. We have to do better. Everyone take notes from Marchy and Bennet. Stop the cute shit and forcing things. Just have a game plan and execute. That’s what the Caps did against us. Keep it simple and avoid mistakes. What Weegar did was just……ughhh worse than Bennett’s dumb ass penalty last season.

Yes the refs were garbage but no excuse at all. We did this to ourselves and also let’s not forget Bob kept us in it.

Hopefully this is nothing more than the wake up call we needed to come out firing and go in a rampage and take several games back to back.

One concern also raised during the end was the winning streak.

They were beating lot of garbage teams during that streak getting into bad habits.

Lazy penalties, giving up leads game after game.

Was was ready, Florida wasn’t.

One reason I wanted Ekblad and Weegar split is because it would allow Ekblad to handle the puck more. With them together it neutralizes Ekblad with the puck and replaces it with Weegar with the puck, at the same time. Weegar does not pass to his defense partner.
It's an issue for some of our defensemen, because when there's nothing to pass to in front of them, they get in trouble. They get tunnel vision. It makes it easier for the opponent to defend you. Weegar gets the worst results. Passing to your defensive partner, as an option, helps with puck possession.
Weegar plays like a forward, like when he has the puck he acts like he's on a breakaway all the time. And he's actually the last man back most of those times. There's no plan B if he doesn't stick handle and skate all the way to the opposing net. He needs to defend, and that's it. The points will come, but even if it's not that many points, at least don't give up so many. That includes passing to people on either side of you. And not making turnovers because you can't complete that simple act.

We just need to get our hands dirty and we'll be fine. Get the mindset right, it's not regular season anymore. Expecting a strong showing in game 2

Washington is probably totally confident in winning this series right now. Before the series they had to look and say, one thing we have as our advantage is experience. In the first game they used that, just stayed calm, and didn't panic. Worked like a charm. They have to think all they know what to do, just need to execute.
The Panthers are going to have to plant doubt in Washington's mind. Otherwise Washington is probably going to give them plenty of what they goo8in the first game.
