2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs first-round predictions

The Avalanche, who are the top seed in the Western Conference, were picked by seven of 16 staffers to win it all. The Flames, the second seed in the West, were picked by four staffers.

The only other team to be picked by more than one staffer was the Florida Panthers, the top seed in the Eastern Conference, which got two picks.
TWO out of 16 writers?? i know, they're just writers and half of 'em are probably morons but still, sobering.

I think our goaltending is a bit of a wildcard, which may be why some would shy away from picking us.

Also we are a team that is carried by its ability to score lots and lots of goals. That style doesn’t lend itself to the tight checking playoff style.

Just playing devil’s advocate

Bolts’ success has partly been surprise factors. 2020 championship had Point and third line and weak defenders playing stronger than expected, and Stamkos making a meaningful guest appearance. 2021 championship had deadline pickups and Kucherov and well practiced PP and Vasy.

If Panthers get the solid Bob and our D steps up with addition of Ek and no weak links… and the opponents are less successful in exploiting our weaknesses, because they aren’t as bad as opponents plan for. So their game plans have to be adjusted quickly… usually doesn’t work so well. Okay, just being an advocate back: it could happen that way too.

Not surprised at all.

It's not "how good the team is", it's "how likely to win it all are they", or more accurately, "pick the most likely team". Four other guys had FLA as a SC finalist; it's possible many have us as n.3/4. Only one guy has us eliminated in the first round - the FLA-WSH series is seen as the third most loopsided behind Colorado-Nashville and Calgary-Dallas.

I'd also probably vote Colorado or Calgary, simply because the East is so much harder than the West.
Note that Tampa only got one vote - we're the only team in the East who got two.

There's also playoff experience - and let's face it, we're one of the if not the least experienced team there.

I think we have a good chance, but a "good chance" in SC playoffs is still pretty low and we'd have to battle through some excellent teams.

The more I think about it the better this feels. Getting through east will be damn hard but we start with optimal match-up to get us really going & getting Ek back with game shape. Don't mean to be overconfident but if we lose to this Caps team something has gone terribly wrong. And they are not a bad team, actually they can be a really nasty opponent. But we are just so much better when playing our full game this should and will be our series. Wouldn't be surprised if we lose one game from the first two but as this goes longer the evident will happen.

In playoffs it's so much about mental aspects. I really want to see what happens with this team when they get their first round win in their belt. Second round will be the true test can they raise their game into championship-level, that will be needed.

I dont like our odds in round 2, not cobfident in the D/goaltending. That said, I am feeling good about the Caps because they dont have d or goaltending. 2010 Halak isnt walking through that door for them.

I feel this is going to be a cardiac panthers series. We’ll lose the first 2. Win the next 2. Then split the next 2 just to win it in 7.

How could it be different with this team?
