(Reuters) - A U.S. F-22 fighter jet shot down an unidentified object over Canada on Saturday, the second such shootdown in as many days, as North America appeared on heightened alert following a week-long Chinese spying balloon saga that drew the global spotlight.

Trudeau also said he had spoken with U.S. President Joe Biden about the incident, a day after Biden ordered a shootdown of an unidentified flying object over sea ice near Deadhorse, Alaska. The U.S. military on Saturday was still tight-lipped about what, if anything, it had learned as recovery efforts were underway.

The Pentagon on Friday offered only a few details, including that the object was the size of a small car, it was flying at about 40,000 feet and could not maneuver and appeared to be unmanned. U.S. pilots and intelligence officials have been trying to learn about the object since it was first spotted on Thursday.

I'm going with Musk's latest Tesla model.

Last three targets deemed benign so far, but nothing had been recovered sounds like.

If it's some company or research project balloons I wonder if they will come forward or not?

Some of it may just be posturing to send a message... the US government saying to the world at large, "yes we see this crap flying around our airspace, yes we can shoot it down, we are just choosing not to". The identity of the object doesn't matter, it could be Farmer John's drone. Point is simply to illustrate that they can do this routinely if they want to.

Scrambling an air-to-air fighter jet (possibly with a wingman depending on perceived threat) is not something USG wants to do NOR wants to pay for regularly. So while there may be global posturing motivations involved, it's not feasible for USAF and/or USN to address these incidents on a regular basis in the manner they have been to date.

Exactly, that’s why you make a big show of it once or twice. I guarantee we won’t be seeing these shootdowns every 2 or 3 days going forward, even if people keep sending up RC hobby planes or whatever these objects were. The point has already been made.

Pretty amusing that there's an significant amount of people actually believing these are alien spacecraft. I have a buddy who is all in on it and it gets obnoxious from time to time. It's never been an intriguing idea to me. With what we've found out from the James Webb the last few months alone has me convinced we're very very very unlikely to ever come into contact with any other life forms.

1) Our galaxy, not even our solar system, is essentially a single grain of sand on the huge beach that is our observable universe. We are too small and probably much too far away to ever have those conditions align to me met by another intelligent civilization.

2) Even if there is life out in our own galaxy, the chances of it evolving past the prokaryotic bacteria stages that Earth itself saw for billions of years in the exact 12,000 year window we've been living in civilization would require too much luck in my humble opinion.

I defer to @Stylizer1 in all such matters.
I don't pay much attention to UFO talk.

Our periodical table is probably a grain of sand on a beach also when comparing all of the unknown elements out there. It's possible that there are a million planets out there with atmospheres similar to ours.

I've always liked the idea that UFOs are travelling light-years to reach us, needing to have mastered technology we can only dream of to do so; but then as soon as they get here they're just constantly crashing into the Earth.

To me, most of the story seems obvious.

In the 1940's the Soviet Union was testing nuclear bombs, the US came up with a clever way to spy on them. Over US soil they launched balloons carrying microphones that could detect the sound waves from the explosions. After some initial confusion the "saucer" was quickly reclassified as a weather balloon. The hope was that Soviets would buy the weather balloon excuse and not look into it any further or they might realize they were being observed.

Later on, they found UFOs to be a convenient way to help hide secret planes like the SR-71 or F-117, so they happily leaned into the UFO craze created in Roswell.

The part that's less clear is the recent "tic tac" videos/reports. But it's hard not to think there's a similar reason why some info about them has been allowed to surface, and why the government seemingly wants people to draw the conclusion that they're not from this planet.

The more recent extraterrestrial explorers have all been clearly sophisticated enough to access HFBoards content on their approach, and concluded that interstellar life isn't worth living any more.

What I find most amusing is that the conspiracy theorist's mindset is so dead-set on things being the opposite of what they seem, that as soon as their original theories begin to be confirmed they get suspicious and pivot to mundane explanations which they would have previously condemned as lies and coverups.

not much of a conspiracy guy but more of one that just looks for information out there.

I find it very interesting when you read or watch interviews or statements from Navy pilots. They have stated that when the f-18s got upgraded with the new AESA radars they were pinging all kinds of UAPs off both coasts that were stationary, flying in formation or flying in erratic patterns.

it would be interesting if the US had some kind of secret drone army testing going on. The pilots that have seen these things have had huge part of their lives dedicated to the knowledge and operation of aviation aircrafts and cannot describe or understand what they have witnessed.

Top Pentagon officials told a House panel on Tuesday that there are now close to 400 reports from military personnel of possible encounters with UFOs -- a significant increase from the 144 tracked in a major report released last year by the U.S. intelligence community.

A Navy official also said at Tuesday's hearing that investigators are "reasonably confident" the floating pyramid-shaped objects captured on one leaked, widely seen military video were likely drones.

That footage, which the military confirmed last year was authentic, had helped spur interest in purported UFOs, also referred to as "unidentified aerial phenomena" or UAPs.

The three recent Pentagon "ufo" videos are just ordinary aircraft being picked up on sensors and shown to people who have no idea what they're looking at.
