la la land is fire real talk. and it should be half way point of a movie imo
Does that mean you do or don't like La La Land?

Halfway would probably be fair in most cases but I didn't need watch an hour of La La Land to know I hated it.

No rule but 3 minutes is just too little. I made it almost 20 minutes into La La Land before I couldn't take it anymore. So if we make a rule I suggest a 15 minute minimum.
there are lots of people who already have decided in less than a minute if they're going to give a suitor the time of day after first laying eyes. anyone wanting to make a movie here's some advice: better make those first 3 minutes really count.

La La Land is pretty damn good imo, it's a little meta and knows what it is. I would say it's a great example of a movie to not give up on too soon, unless you really hate musicals. The opening is intentionally campy af, and there's like 2 other numbers like that, but otherwise it's nothing like the first few minutes.

I mean I agree with a first date and all that, but it still can be worth seeing it out a little bit longer on that too.

I often have an overly strong urge to quite a movie in the first few minutes, and it would drive my gf crazy, but I usually try to stick it out. There Will Be Blood is a great example, I would say it's probably the best movie I watched last year, but I wanted to turn it off for a solid 10/15 minutes.

There’s social sympathy towards fat people who can’t get their lives in order…since that’s a huge chunk of the North American populous, so the Whale takes advantage of that message.

It’s so shallow. I loved Brendan Fraser growing up and I’m really happy he won an Oscar but I’m not going to watch a movie about some blubbering fat guy and his broken relationship with that constantly negative and annoying girl from Stranger Things. It’s not intriguing, it’s shallow.
THIS is the guy at the party you quickly tell you have to get another drink and walk away as fast as possible.

Well that's the thing, I've hated every musical I've ever seen.

I think the Oscar was a bit of a "lifetime achievement award" for Brendan Fraser, plus a bid for the Hollywood establishment to atone for wronging him for many years. At least publicly.

It's interesting seeing all the negative press the film has gotten though from people who claim the film is "fat phobic." Like many things in modern society, what's seen as progressive to some is seen as obscene and offensive to others

Anyone making the claim is a moron shouldn't be taken seriously.

I just saw Les Miserables a few weeks ago and loved it, I’m seeing Book of Mormon in a few weeks as well
Les Miserables was the last musical I tried to watch before La La Land. Had to turn it off about a half hour in before I shoved ice picks in my ears. If I was to ever like any musical it would probably be the Book of Mormon but I've never got around to watching it.

The movie is one thing dude. I’m talking about seeing it live in person. I’ve hated musicals forever until I saw this one recently in Chicago. Les Mis is cool because it’s about a lot of deeply human things, not merely a sappy love story with songs.

Why do you torture yourself by trying to watch a genre you know you dislike?

Oh sorry, I thought you meant the movie. I saw The Music Man when I was in grade 7 or 8 and thought it was ok. Definitely better than any musical movie I've seen but I was young obviously and haven't seen one since. I'd be a lot more interested in seeing one if it had actors I'm familiar with in it but that doesn't happen where I live.

I guess because I think my taste may have evolved. That being said, the last one I watched was La La Land and that was about 6 years ago.

I haven't seen The Whale and have the feeling I will hate this thread once I have, but until then, let me make this off-topic more fun:

The same people claim that the main character should have been played by an actual 600lbs man. In a movie about how his self-destructive lifestyle affects himself and those around him.

Still, good luck finding someone who is naturally that big, has the acting chops to pull off the role and is "healthy" enough to spend hours on set every day.

Got through 3 minute before shutting it off. Not suprised something like that garbage would win an Oscar though.
How can someone make such a conclusion about a movie from only the first 3 minutes? I liked the movie but I can see why people wouldn't like it. But you didn't give it a chance and you decided you were going to hate the movie before you even watched those 3 minutes.

I turned Nomadland off after the opening scene of the main character squatting and peeing in a field. That convinced me the tone was going to be little more than shock value poverty porn

I can't imagine someone watching the first fifteen minutes of There Will Be Blood and not being captivated.

But there's a difference between not willing to continue a movie after 3 minutes versus coming to the conclusion that it was garbage.

I mean I haven't seen it, and I might get some shit for it, but a24 films are usually over the top highbrow to a painful level, without as much substance as they think they have. As someone who just watched 10+ of them recently because I've been stuck in a hotel room with an on demand collection.
Good Time and Low Tide were both very good though

How's After Yang? That's next up for me.

Nomadland is one of the more puzzling critical darlings I've seen in several years. A film without a pulse or a point.

Ehh idk, it just wasn't exactly what I was expecting and I had to rewind it cause I was a little confused about the timeline of what unfolded. But that movie is brilliance, I watched a bunch of PTA movies around the same time, and nothing comes close

Didn't get to that one. Recent ones I watched , in order of enjoyment

Good Time
White Noise* Netflix/a24 collab
Low Tide

thoroughly enjoyed those 3, below were all just average/overly pretentious or possibly even bad imo

High Life
The Lighthouse
Climax
It Comes at Night
X
The Blackcoat's Daughter
In Fabric
Spring Breakers

They do have a few movies I really love and a few I for sure still want to see

I really liked Good Time and think it's underrated. Maybe underrated isn't the right word since it got good reviews but seems like anytime I talk movies with someone they haven't seen it.

Exact same vibes as Uncut Gems, they just make a gripping thriller in a really original way
