That's fair.

What if Lowe were to ask for, say, Steve Reinprecht, straight up?
For some reason Steven Reinprecht's name jumped out at me as well, only because we aquired Langkow recently.

It would be tough however. Reinprecht is one hell of a talented player but has been hampered by the depth in Colorado and injuries last season. He did have 51 points two season ago however and at the age of 27 he is entering his prime years. I could see him putting up 55-60 points this year - if he stays in good health of course.

Gretzky admitted before the selections that they were looking at giving a young defenceman a chance on the roster for some experience. This young defenceman was going to be the 7th d-man. If they were looking to win the Olympics at all costs then Scott Stevens would have been named - but Gretzky and Lowe decided to give the #7 d-man spot to a youngster.

BTW, in 2002 both Wade Redden and Derek Morris were better than Brewer so you cant tell us that Lowe's input meant nothing.
Even IF, what you say is true...
Doesn't the #7 Dman sit in the pressbox?
How did Brewer get so much toi?
Were Quinn/Hitch feeling particularly charitable in allowing Brew on the ice?
I get it now, the gold medal meant nothing to Gretz/etal, getting on KLo's good side was the real goal.[/sarcasm]

Brewer was invited to the 2001 WCs and played well.
Maybe, that's why he was on the short list for the Olympics.
KLo may have suggested, but, ultimately, it was Gretzky's call.
And, the coaches played him because he did what they asked of him.
I don't know why this is so difficult for some to grasp.

If Brewer were as bad as some people think, why do great hockey minds keep choosing him?
:dunno:

Good points.

Would it be fair to say that you wouldn't give up anything more than Reinprecht straight up for Brewer?

Well, that depends. If I was willing to trade Reinprecht -- and I haven't said I would be yet -- a throw in of say, a Chris Clark wouldn't bother me.

Who else on your roster would you be willing to give up instead of Reinprecht?

Exactly IceDragon, C'mon Brewer detractors.... why was he played?

y are u trying to trade brewer i don't care if we get a center it is probally not gonna be worth it simply for the fact that our d were not great last year, all oilers fans will espically have picked this up but when brewer got hurt around christmas time i think it was the oilers went on a terrible skid and were getting lit up. we need brewer

No, I was trying to gauge what MrMastodonFarm places Brewer's value at.

So far I have:

Brewer = Chris Clark +/- Steve Reinprecht :D

Fuzzy logic... I love it. ;)

Just kidding, MrMastodonFarm. But seriously, I would like to know what you see Brewer as being worth. Do you see him as being a #2 D? A #1 on a weak team? A #3 at best?

The pairings at Salt Lake were:
Pronger-Macinnis
Jovanovski-Blake
Niedermayer-Foote

Brewer started for game 1, and Jovo was in the press box. After that if memory serves correct Canada went with 7 defenceman but Brew got limited ice-time.

Right now?

On a "contending" team I see Brewer as being a #3 guy. Although I think in 2-3 years he could top out as a #2 guy on an average team. He has to get more consistant and alot better in his own zone for that to happen though.

I just don't like Eric Brewer at this point. I don't like the way he just plain doesn't show up some nights. The guy really shows some serious lack of focus and intensity on some nights.

Thats a pretty cheap shot considering how cival our discussion has been.

It was you who brought up Reinprecht, and it was you who mentioned if it would take more. I merely stated if the "more" was a 4th liner like Clark then no, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Wasn't he the seldom used 7th defencemen, who dressed to gain experiance, the experiance his GM wanted him to get?

Thats completely fair to say, most of us Oiler fans agree that he lacks intensity most of the time. I recall a game where he scored the overtime winner against detroit, and hardly cracked a smile. But we also know that when the playoffs come, he steps up in a huge way, and often leads the team in scoring, at the very least defenseman.

He's also played very well in pressure situations and the olympics, world championships and such. I guess this is why we keep clinging to hope that he can be a number 1 guy, he just has to get over his complacency during the regular season, and show up every night. Well, thats enough for me.

Well we all have our own opinions and I don't think I, or anyone else, can change yours. And you're not likely going to be able to change the opinions of some of the Brewer supporters/defenders here.

I think Brewer is a pretty darn good defenseman. I don't think the Oilers should consider trading him at this point, as he logs important minutes and is basically the only true backend puck-rusher on our team. If we were to trade him Lowe would demand quite a bit.

That said, he can be inconsistent at times and does seem to make mental mistakes. His offensive game will never be what we hoped in the beginning, but I think he will develop into a *very* solid defensive force as he enters his prime.

I think it's important to distinguish here between Brewer's relative value to the Oilers versus his trade value on the market. Brewer is uber-important to the team and IMO will not be moved for anything less than a first round pick and a blue chip prospect, and even one other depth roster player. That is likely not what any team in the league would be prepared to give up for him, and that's fine.

On the topic of the thread, Brewer's relative value to Team Canada can be compared similarly to his value to the Oilers. He has valuable international experience, has won before in tournaments, has answered the call without question or injury concerns in the past, and has shown he can perform at a high international level. Whether he has had to elevate his game to do it or has the natural ability to do it because he's just that good doesn't matter, IMO. He was chosen to the team because he has shown that his value to Team Canada is high, and whether or not he's "better" than other defenseman who weren't chosen isn't as critical here because that's not the point, IMO. I would argue Aucoin is a better defenseman. Bouwmeester shows more potential. Hannan could be better defensively. Regehr might be more physical. McCabe can score more points.

Does any of that matter? If you're talking trade or evaluation on some scale, yes. If you're talking about his legitimacy as a defenseman for Team Canada, then not so much, IMO.

I apologize.

In fairness it was out of jest more than anything else. I'm sorry if you were offended by it.

So where would your golden-boy Regehr be as far as org. rank?

Brewer was the 6th defenseman decided to the team, beating out Jovanoski.

Explain that one.

Get your facts straight. Jovanovski got twice the minutes Brewer did and was called by Don Cherry Canada's best defenceman.

If Brewer was selected to be ahead of Jovanovski on the depth chart, I would be very dissapointed in the Team Canada braintrust. Brewer is overrated by them I feel sometimes.

Yeah, I'd be disappointed too. I mean, they're undefeated and all... A lot to be disappointed about so far.
