I like Jack's call better, but this is always great to have a listen to again.
Former Yankee HOFer closer for all of you young-uns.Stu can be our Mariano Rivera.![]()
While there is a lot of truth to this the Vegas finishing on the other hand was in outerspace. You don't score when you wire pucks wide on scoring chances or stuff pads or logos. Last night Vegas had 5 real shots through the first 30mins. (credited with 7 but two were dumps) for Clarity Skinner only had to make one decent stop in that frame. Vegas then got busy for the only 5mins in the game that they were, in last 5mins of 2nd period. Skinner was required to make some stops, and quality stops at times but there were maybe 2 that were really challenging. One was the Eichel shot that Skinner made the blocker save on.
In my mind the only way to get a handle on what we're seeing is to see what other goalies are doing, or requied to do. For example in first period alone last night Bobroski made 5 highway robbery stops last night. Stupendous stops. Even Woll was quite good for around 25mins keeping the Leafs in the game.
I'm not completely prepared to say Skinner has found his way or anything like that. In playoff hockey you can only be completely structured and shutting down everything if the opponent whimpers and allows it. Sure Skinner was good, sure Vegas the way they are playing wouldn't be scoring on pretty much anybody.
When your top 5 goal scorers get zero goals in a series you ain't beating anybody and you sure ain't scoring much. Our goaltending benefitted from a complete lack of shooter confidence by Vegas. In shortest terms they had nobody going. Nobody feeling it. Barbie on a clear breakaway with time shot into Skinner right pad. Right into pad. Eichel passed off chances from the slot. Doro shot wide or shanked shots. Stone, Saad got injured, Hertl never scored, Eichel never scored, so it went.
On the goalie profile, in general, the Oilers are still limited. Sure if they completely shut the opponent down its airtight. Will every opponent allow that or will some "storm the tower".
Zombie Oilers. Interesting my friend. That was my alternate name of thread but I went with Possum Oilers. This edition of the Oilers is a straight zombie. You can shoot them in the chest 30 times and they'll still get back up.
Unshakable belief mixed with rock solid depth and elite top end game breaking talent.
This group, particularly given that hockey is a grueling 7 game series, has got to be one of the hardest outs I can ever really recall in sports.
It must be terrible to have that little going for you.
If the Laffs pull off a miracle I think we will still get Jack no? Otherwise I imagine it’s CuthbertGonna miss not having Jack next round. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea with some of his stories, but for me there is no one better at calling the big goals.
i thought i heard Ivanka Osmak say jack and louie will return for the WCF in the post game show.Gonna miss not having Jack next round. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea with some of his stories, but for me there is no one better at calling the big goals.
I give Skinner a bit more credit. hahaI mean, I don't disagree with you. We played a solid, structured game (that was the context of my post).
I do think you could give Skinner a little more credit though... he's a big structured goalie who maintains good angles in a structured game. He is at least partly to blame for having his crest or his pad where the shot was placed... that's an under appreciated part about goaltending. When you don't give them anything, and don't bite on anything, they have no choice but to shoot at you and it doesn't look like you are doing much.
From personal experience, there are games were I ask "am I giving him top cheese above my shoulder" and a millisecond into that thought I know the answer the hard way... and then there are nights where you don't even have to ask, because you know you have literally everything covered. Skinner had one of the latter last night, and yes, his team made it easier for him to have such a night, but they certainly can and should share credit with him.
* any reference to you is meant in the general specific way and not directed towards you in anyway.
This the stupidest thing people did around here. I've got to a point where all those people are on my ignore list because f*** them., but its awfully quiet around here because of it.
The team plays well, they win, its that simple. Over. Done. When the team buys in, they are the best team in the league.
Im sitting here laughing at the overly dramatic posters posting "thats the series" after game 3. Have some f***ing faith. This team has been to the last 3 of 4 WCF, the SCF last year and lost to the Stanley cup champions the last 3 years and yet people here are so quick to write them off at every opportunity. Are they really fans? I mean you have to question that at some point. Im sure some are trolls, others have some humiliation kink or what not, but almost universally all them have no faith in the team.
SKinner was fighthing for his career these last 2 games. Kudo to him to stepping up, if being optimisitic and wanting to see to the team succeed makes me his uncle, than fine, but f*** you for suggesting it. I certainly didn't expect a shut out in game 4, let alone a second one last night. I was literally thinking his career was over after game 3 even though that goal wasn't soley his fault.
Gonna miss not having Jack next round. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea with some of his stories, but for me there is no one better at calling the big goals.
I'm going on the assumption that the Leafs series plays out like they usually do.If the Laffs pull off a miracle I think we will still get Jack no? Otherwise I imagine it’s Cuthbert
There is a pecking order, and Cuthbert and Simpson will get the top billing. Apparently if the Jets had lost against the Blues we would have gotten the duo that are calling their games against the Stars.Who says he isn't back? I mean, usually it'd be Chris Cuthbert and Craig Simpson, but maybe Rogers has changed?
Things have switched for me. I'm not minding Jack as much these days, but I can certainly do without Louie.Gonna miss not having Jack next round. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea with some of his stories, but for me there is no one better at calling the big goals.
I hope we get to call him "The Closer"Stu can be our Mariano Rivera.![]()
Simpson describes the play as if he's doing radio and you can't see what's going on. He's supposed to "enhance" the viewing experience, not give a blow by blow of the obvious. There is a pecking order, and Cuthbert and Simpson will get the top billing. Apparently if the Jets had lost against the Blues we would have gotten the duo that are calling their games against the Stars.
yeah I hate that he seems like an arrogant asshole, they got outplayed badly most of the series."I mean, we had our chances, we just couldn't really capitalize. It's more on us, than probably, them"
Post game and post series words from Pietrangelo. As if I can't stand him enough already, he gives comments with not one of them giving any credit to an Oilers team that just demolished him and his band of inbreds.
This isn't Mariano, or Stu for that matter, but I guess the title is relevant, so there's that.I hope we get to call him "The Closer"
Stu can be our Mariano Rivera.![]()
Meh, the Oilers were okay, is all. Vegas just gave up with no compete. A speedbump.Zombie Oilers. Interesting my friend. That was my alternate name of thread but I went with Possum Oilers.
Its a good analogy. Just no give up in this lineup. Doesn't matter what score is, even better to kill the enemy dead coming from behind multiple goals and ripping out hearts.
I think it's so cool that we have stars from other sports like Charles Barkley and Shaq cheering for the Oilers. And don't forget Rory Mcllroy. I guess stars like to follow other stars![]()
