We have the depth and talent to win games without playing well. For better and worse.
that is correct. this team can't play the way other teams (boston, colorado, tampa, all the usual suspects) do. what those teams play with an aesthetic normalcy what all hockey fans are all accustomed to. this squad can do that, but only in infrequent spurts.

what we have is an ugly hockey team. we look like shit, sometimes boring as hell, and to be perfectly frank it's absolutely beyond miracles that the team somehow scores 5x5. with that being said, we'll have to heavily rely on goaltending and all 5 on ice to be defensive disruptors to the opposition each night from establishing any kind of offensive rhythm. that and a consistent PP.

maybe GG has tried during practices implementing a system in place with these guys but the chemistry is just not there as a whole for it to work. the result is the ugliness that we see quite often. it's an ugly team that is somehow winning.

This board always absolves the goalie of all blame, it can never be the goalie’s fault, even on the worst softies.

I think there are two reasons for this:

1) Despite my complaints Hank and Igor are two of the best in the world.

2) If they God forbid absolve the goalie then they won't be able to have the pleasure complaining about how terrible of a roster it is.

Even worse than tonight’s result is that me, my wife, and our daughter came to the decision that it’s time to say goodbye to our dog.

He’s been fighting cancer since July and it has eaten his muscle mass, as well as him blowing out his ACLs years ago, and now he is struggling to get up and move. He gave me a look when I went up to bed like, dad it’s time.

I’m going to miss him so much.
Stay strong man. You’re doing the right thing by helping him go on peacefully. You’re a compassionate owner.

My takeaways from this game:

-Boston is what a serious Cup contender looks like. They were on the 2nd night of back to backs, played half the game with 5D, looked tired on the ice, turned the puck over numerous times in their own defensive zone, and still came away with a clean 3-1 win in a game the Rangers never challenged. Not a strong game by them by any stretch (other than Swayman), and they still won handily. Part and parcel of why I'd rather see the Rangers continue to build rather than go all in on a playoff appearance that 99% will not result in a Cup this year. Does anyone seriously think we have a chance against a team like Boston in a 7-game series, or any near-equally skilled team?
-Holy crap, Harpur actually scored a goal with one of those terrible floaters from the point! Good on him, but as I said to my wife during the game, if you removed the other 9 skaters and both goalies from the ice and asked him to take that same shot at the empty net, he'd probably miss entirely or land center mass. That he managed to pick a corner from that spot is blind puck luck (and a product of a nice screen by Chytil), but not repeatable, and that it was our only scoring play spoke volumes about where the offense still is.
-Lines. Trocheck and Panarin - complete nothingburger...again. Kravtsov...played well and demoted to the 4th line for no reason...again. The line changes did not help the offense and rarely do, in fact they seem to actively hurt. These stupid scorer-scorer-grinder combos did not work in November, and they are not working now. Whether it's GG or the assistants, these lines are DUMB. Vesey on the 4th line actually makes them not a complete defensive black hole. Kravtsov is defensively solid, but putting him there destroys his offense, which he was active in creating/shooting prior to being demoted. Again - DUMB.
-Too much hesitation shooting pucks. Lindgren, Panarin, Laf, Goodrow - just quickly from memorably, all 4 had the puck in the slot and either passed, or hesitated to shoot and either got blocked or stopped by Swayman. This team is terrible at taking snap shots or shooting off the pass when not receiving the pass on the off-side. It's ridiculous how long they take to release the puck.
-Offensive structure. Way too much perimeter play, and way too much stagnation. The purpose of going to the net isn't just to stand there, it's to try to move around, lose your check, and create a passing lane and a shooting lane at the same time. The only one on the team who's doing this right now is Chytil. Literally everyone else just goes to the front of the net and stands there, or sits along the perimeter and passes the puck around the boards. This team needs more structure down low instead of building everything off point shots. Where are the strong side overload / triangle plays that result in a centering pass for a scoring opportunity? Where's the weak-side pass to a cutting D, or an opportunistic forward at the side of the net for a tap-in? The offensive zone is way too positional. This is especially the case on the PP. During the game, I pointed out a 30-second shift to my wife where the Rangers just passed the puck around the perimeter, skating, moving to the puck, chipping it along the boards...generally working really freaking hard to not create anything. Boston's defenders just stood calmly in formation in the middle of their defensive zone, not moving anything other than their sticks, remaining perfectly in position no matter how much the puck moved - because nothing the Rangers did was opening up a passing lane to a scoring area.
-Powerplay was terrible again. Too much play up high in the offensive zone.
-Lafreniere showed more willingness to try to be creative in this game. He was noticeable out there, and this was a better game by him. Hopefully he can get a lucky goal at some point to get his confidence back, because it's clear that's a major part of what's holding him back right now.
-Thank goodness Sammy Blais didn't play tonight. Say a prayer of gratitude.
-Chytil and Zibanejad were by far the most active forwards on the ice. Both had a good game. Also loving K'Andre's increasing willingness to shoot the puck (especially using the slapshot) from the point this year.
-All told, they didn't play *that* badly today, and still got beaten soundly. Hopefully this makes it clear to all those who believe "all we have to do is make the playoffs and anything can happen" that there's still a very long way to go before this team can be considered a serious Cup contender.

This part is so true and amazing that almost all our skaters are guilty of this:
“This team is terrible at taking snap shots or shooting off the pass when not receiving the pass on the off-side. It's ridiculous how long they take to release the puck.”

Worth the read.

Even if we had a Hornqvist to dig out rebounds, he would be ineffective on this team...because we don't put pucks on net in order to crate havoc in front of the goalie. We're constantly trying to create the perfect play, that we'd rather miss the net 15 times in a row than shot that puck into the goalies' pads & let chaos ensue fighting for loose pucks.

Despite all the flack he gets - Trouba is a great candidate for simple 'bomb pucks and bodies to the net". He had a few tonight, one on the Boston broadcast showed 94-98 mph. He can bring the heat.

He is far from without fault don't get me wrong, but how we play is not good for what he can bring. Constantly trying to force globetrotter hockey against real opponents just doesn't work. Take away the middle, we really struggle.

I sincerely believe we have the skillset to drive pucks/traffic to the net and grab loose change for bang-bang goals off rebounds/or burying first rebound pucks. The lion's share of them got good hands to handle these scenarios IMO instead of trying to generate from flashy plays (and you can still have the flash!)

However I don't think the sky is falling either like some have it portrayed in here. All opinions I guess.

Ah so I was right - he did give Igor a good snow shower right before the shot. No wonder the Boston feed only showed it once, briefly. (I have it set to start at the piece I'm talking about)

I'm 100% with Vally on this one.

Vally made another good point that goes back to a discussion we had at the start of the season. The Rangers have a high shot count but still lose the games. Our opponents simply have better chances in that they have more ice to work with and have more speed setting up their chances/shots which make them much more dangerous than our ponderous approach attacking square and tracking goalies.

Boston, tired as they were on a b2b, skated as a unit, all five players skate, move and anticipate. Much of the time the Rangers have 1 guy skating (often the C) and the rest of the team are mostly watching what's going to happen next or standing waiting for the puck to get on their stick. It's simply not sharp and good enough. Our basic approach is too static in all three zones, it's flawed.

Yep. Exactly. The pretty passing and the easy tap in goals are great. But the rangers seem to only score on those and they ignore a whole other set of goals, the rebound goals. The digging goals.
And btw, if you’re getting some ugly goals, there will be more space to set up the purrdy ones later on.
I’ve said it before but a few shifts per period I’d love them to just focus on crashing the net. Just do it enough to soften up the D.

agree with every word of that, but these two things specifically are the two biggest contributors to why we suck at scoring goals / generating any intentional looks/volume chances. we absolutely suck at shooting, and generally speaking, most technical skills versus other teams. it cant be overstated...we really, really suck at shooting - especially snapshots. was watching mackinnon and rantanen the other day - and yes theyre two of the elite and not saying thats the expectation per se - their shots though aren't just a higher level, the way they can shoot youd think the rangers dont belong on the same ice as them. and beyond them there were several other players i saw receiving passes and firing seeds id love to see this team taking and with similar frequency as the avs did. things like making passes on the tape, receiving passes with speed, receiving passes on the backhand, shooting off the pass, attacking one on one, getting shots off quickly, finishing in tight, breakaways, and hitting empty nets are all below nhl average as a team, an unfortunate number being well below.

and then when it comes to offense...its everything about generating chances purposely 5 on 5 unless off a turnover or broken play. they never find a decent look walking into the zone 3 on 2 or 3 on 3. no one backs the d off with speed before pulling up, no one challenges 1 on 1, no one besides gauthier will dip the shoulder and take it to the net. and off the puck nobody ever drives the middle to take a d, there's no creativity in playing off each other ie carrying the puck as if theyre actually on the attack and knowing ways they plan to create a shot they want. instead, if we carry the puck into the zone its something like: pull up for a trailer who fumbles or misses the pass, throw the heels out and get closed on while gliding towards the boards before throwing a hopeless cross ice pass, or throw the heels out and glide further outside until closed out on the boards harmlessly. if we get possession off a dump in, any shot has some variation of pass around corner/perimeter until point shot with no traffic or get traffic but point shot miss way wide - with the occasional shot from the goal line or limp wristed muffin from the half wall. the only look we do have, that absolutely no one doesnt see coming a mile away, is the dot to dot cross ice turnover, or at best a whiff on the one timer. they never force teams out of position with what they're doing in a way that isn't wildly telegraphed. they make hockey look so gd hard, especially whenever they have the puck
