Overlooked? Personally, before the Olympics i was ranking the teams:

1.Canada
2.Czech
3 Sweden
4.Slovakia
5.Russia
6.USA
7.Finland
8.Germany
not around here you didn't!

Finland as 7th, Slovakia as behind the Swedes.... Germany ahead of the Swiss... all ouch

but you did think the Slovaks would outperform the Russians and Americans.

I didn't rank them but I totally thought the Finns and Slovaks were underappreciated, as they usually are. It is indeed the Big-7, though some like to reduce the number to two or three.

ALl that matters is the Gold..Canada gave it a half a** effort and only lost 2-0.

I feel sorry for all you guys. Watch when Canada revs it up after the next game.

Wasn't that said after Canada was shut out by Switzerland?

That type of attitude and thinking is the reason why the Canadians have been shut out two straight games. They think they are obligated to be given the gold medals. Looks like they forgot the fact that they have to earn it.

Face the facts. There are teams out there who look hungrier than the Canadians. Finland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic appear to be better on the ice. Too bad you don't win games on what your roster is on paper. This isn't a fantasy hockey league.

That's what Pittsburgh Penguins found out this season early.

It's a TEAM game.

And Canada is NOt the best team out there on the ice. Their chance for Olympic gold is slim. As a Canadian, I'm sad about it. But as a hockey fan, I'm impressed and pleased at the level of play of several teams at the tourney. It's been fun watching almost every game so far.

It's amazing how many Finn fans are on these boards, and how few Slovak fans.

Isnt Finland the telecommunications mecca of the world? I would expect lots of them to have internet connection, plus I think they learn english as well at a young age.

Pretty much yes. Here you start learning english at either 3rd or 7th grade, depending if you choose English or Swedish. As for the internet connections, I don't have any real statistics on it, but I'd say that the vast majority of 15-50 year olds is online.

I feel sorry for you. This is why I never support Team Canada even though they have many players I like.

I thought it was interesting that the stats ( from the Canadian broadcasters on NBC) showed the Finns out hitting the Canadians... So much for the "soft euros" myth.

finland
goals for: 17
goals against: 2

The finns were never characterized as "soft". NHLers for over forty years have been saying the Finns play hockey like Canadians: physical and fiesty, lots of checking and hits.

The Swedes and Russians were the Euros meant when the phrase "Euros are soft" was used with some accuracy (a long time ago now), along with the Czechs and Slovaks to a certain extent.

This is pretty improbable since Finnish hockey was nothing 40 years ago.

The Slovaks, Finns & Czechs seem to be hungrier. They don't have the sense of "entitlement" that the Canadian team seems to have. The Czechs proved that at the Worlds last May.

Slovakia is because they have Marian Hossa. Hossa = God. :D

I've been saying that last part of your post since Hossa was drafted. He's incredibly underrated. Overshadowed by Thornton, Heatley, Kovalchuk, and others (even if they play different games). Hossa is the ideal combination of strength, skill, vision and perseverence.

It's been pretty well established for awhile that the Finns play a more physical style akin to North-American hockey than any of the other European hockey powers.

I'm not surprised they outhit Canada at all. They came out and played a huge game at the last Olympics (in 2002) where Selanne was hitting everything in sight (as he was again).

If only Selanne could play like that every game in the NHL. ;)

Didn't want to start a new thread but I have a question not related to this topic.

When will they decide about the timing of the quarterfinals?

I guess I do, otherwise I probably would not have bothered to post. But it's not a biggie, just something that always puzzles me. And makes me waste time telling people "you should not count out Finland" before every tournament.

But yeah, this time it looked even worse because of the big rejections we got before the games....even I lost some faith.

Finland is the HPK of international hockey :sarcasm:
