I'll just defer to the player, the team, the medical professionals that probably have some idea of what's going on and hope for the best. If he doesn't feel right to play or they think it's a risk, it sucks, but keep sitting him. If it's no issue for him to play when he feels he can, go for it.

This thread is really just a way to pass the time between games, tbh.

I agree with that, but at the same time, if he's really that hurt, I don't want to risk him playing and really screwing up whatever is wrong with him to the point where it becomes a bigger problem going forward.

People railed on the Nationals for sitting Strasberg during a playoff run not too terribly long ago because they had a legitimate chance to win a title but didn't want to risk his long term potential. Few years later, his play as a healthy starter for them helped lead them to a World Series title after watching their franchise star walk to a division rival for free.

I agree. My only counter is if Slavin really could injure himself further by playing, then why he was even in for game 1?

Edit: I mentioned this on the main board, but if Slavin's injury is making the big minutes harder but isn't something he can injure further, why not try this?

Skjei-Hamilton
Bean-Pesce
Slavin-Hakanpaa

Give Slavin the minutes Lajoie has been getting plus PK time. If he's doing well tomorrow, you can reunite him with Pesce down the stretch as a shutdown pairing and give Bean-Hakanpaa limited minutes. If Slavin is struggling, it's not like Lajoie or Gardiner is playing big minutes anyway:

Gardiner: 9 min in game 2
Lajoie: 17, 18 minutes in 2OT games 3 and 4.

Nothing is guaranteed either way. But athletes frequently play with injuries when they are told it can't be made any worse. I'm just saying they know better than me. And given their judgment in sitting him so far, I trust them to make the correct call. If they determined that shutting him down officially is the correct thing, I'm fine with that too.

I'm having a hard time buying the day-to-day line at this point. It's not that I'm impatient, it's just that the more he sits, the more likely it is that it's worse than they're letting on.

Everyone's playing through pain this time of year. We all know the stories of the injuries that guys have played through. They don't hold themselves out of playoff games unless it's something serious, or there's a very real risk of it turning into something serious. Whatever it is, I have a hard time believing it'll just go away on its own with a few days' rest.

Obviously, I trust the experts on staff to take care of him and do the right thing for him. They know more than I do. I've just been following the game long enough to be leery of public comments on a player's injury, especially in the middle of a playoff series that will drag on for at least 6 games. Everything is an opportunity for gamesmanship, including a passing comment about a player's status. If Nashville knows he's done, that knowledge is useful in their game planning. Rod knows that, and he's not going to tip anything that can help them.

Hot take. But Slavin should of been the 2nd star of the game tonight. Was just unbelievable, breaking up plays all night. Nashville offense couldn’t get anything going the entire night when he was on the ice. He makes our whole defense better, he creates the matchups are team thrives in.

He’s so damn good.

And, it’s really funny to watch him interact with players on the other team, during scrums and amidst general disagreement. He has the same expression on his face that he’d have in church. He can’t get angry. It’s amazing.

They showed his reaction to the no-goal call. Not sure if it was on the broadcast but they caught it on the jumbotron. He laughed and kind of shook his head drily, in a context where the other 12000 people in the building were ready to start throwing glass bottles.

I was ready to toss my towel onto the ice and then realized I wouldn’t be able to launch it 25 rows down

I watched him tonight, getting around with about half his usual burst and I couldn't help but think, if we'd had a healthy Slavin we may very well have swept this series. Even half hobbled he changes things.

It's pretty clear he's not his usual self though. I think he threw more hits in this one game than he typically does in a month. He's got to play things a little differently to erase people from the play and it affects his transition game. But it sure as hell beats not having him at all, for sure.

His hit on the opening shift was a surprise. It felt like the old "hit or get hit" as soon as possible to get your head in the game when you're coming back from injury.

He's not quite himself, but he's more than serviceable. As long as he can't hurt himself any worse, I'm glad he's back.

I'm quietly waiting for the day when he unleashes the wraith of god on some poor schmuck (Tom Wilson ideally) and just wrecks him. No one sees it coming and no one on the ice or in the stands knows how to react for a while before the roofs blows off.
