What the hell is up with slava?

Just really unnerving how much he's regressed over the past year.

Last year, he was so confident with the puck- ever so reliable on defense, offense, in the corners, on the breakout, etc. At points in time, he was right up there with doughty in terms of consistency. His playoff performance in 2013 was studly.

This year, it seems as if he's just not into it. Is it complacency, now that hes getting millions? Is it a mental issue? Is it his conditioning? Does he miss russia? WTF.

Its so FREAKING disappointing.

He's played now over 100 games in one season, in only his second season. Was our second leading scorer (from a d-man) and plays the third most minutes, on defense, against top players in difficult situations.

I think he basically lacks these type of qualities: passion, fire, drive, sense of urgency,
determination, and desire to be better.

He has no emotions and looks like a machine out there. Can you be an elite athlete
and not be emotive? Sure, it is possible, but not having emotion can be PART OF not caring and being complacent. Happy with the status quo.

For being #1 fastest skater in the AHL 3 years ago, he is now slower than: Mitchell, and Regher. He would probably beat Greene, but that's how much he has regressed. He gets beat in physical battles 1 on 1 almost 100% of the time. And he now coasts out there more than Mike Richards was all season. Thankfully, Richards is skating harder and playing harder now.

I don't know what the answer is. I would field offers for him, after the season, because there are those out there that would overpay for him. A top 4, RH defenseman at the age of 24 would fetch a good return. Not saying I want to
trade him, I just think he is one player in which DL would get a superior return for
the player he is right now. Kind of like Visnovsky back at his peak - DL said that other GM's made incredible offers...he then waited another 2 yrs and got Stoll and Greene.
Not bad. Voynov may be able to get that kind of return now. Why not explore it?
I think of only 1 real positive to keep him and that would be to help other Russian players in their transition here...Prokhorkin, Kitsyn, etc. He's still a good player, but
instead of getting better, or even being as good as he was 2 years ago, he has regressed and that's a problem at the age of 24.

The higher the stakes, the worse he seems to play. Kind of the anti-Doughty. Voynov was probably the worst d-man in the cup run, and hasn't played all that well these playoffs. Super unlucky too, he's gotta be the Kings all-time own goal scorer.

The talent is obviously still there, hopefully he'll mature and turn into the #2 we all know he can be

really? another Slava bashing thread? We are up 2-0 in the Stanley Cup Freaking Finals and this is what you chose to post about? Unbelievable.

Yeah, sorry reset, I just don't think this is necessary now.

Voynov was amazing in last years' playoffs. This year, he's hit that sophmore slump I guess you could say. (2012 he came late, 2013 was a 48 game season.) Also heard was trying to bulk up in the offseason and ended up coming into season out of shape. I fully expect the kid to recover next season.

It's actually quite impressive what this team has been able to do despite guys like Brown, Richards, and Voynov not producing like you'd expect. Many guys have stepped up, and everyone as a whole has gritted this out to get back to the Final.

yes, because:
1. we havent won the cup yet and it seems as if some of our D-corp (ie slava) keep trying to give the series away
2. slava's an important member of the team
3. im genuinely perplexed

does that answer your question?

Given what we all know about Daryl Sutter, do you honestly think that if Voynov was playing as terribly as you and others seem to think he is, that Sutter would still be using him in the situations and minutes that he is?

who else would we use? shultz? mcnabb? bodnarchuk? were pretty thin at D.

well see what he does with regehr, but after seeing that atrocious performance by the greene machine, im suspecting regehr will be in for greene, rather than voynov

Any discussion of Voynov needs to take into consideration his partners. He hasn't been as good since 2012, but he hasn't had partners as good since then. It's been Regher the human anchor, or the rapidly aging Mitchell. If this team gets a solid top-four defenseman in the offseason (just let me hope, okay?), the biggest beneficiary might be Voynov. A good partner for him could return him to top form.

Slava isn't playing up to par this season, but I think he'll bounce back. Maybe part of it is conditioning and the pressure of a new contract. Looks like he's overthinking everything as well. That being said, we're quick to want to dump players with a swiftness who have a down year. Richards, Brown and Slava this season. They're all too young to rule out the possibility of bouncing back at this point. I have faith all 3 will perform to expectations next season.

No I refuse to put it on his partners. Schultz CARRIED Slava on his back when he was in the lineup.

This is simply Slava having a poor season, just call it what it is. Slava simply needs a reset, and unfortunate the off-season is only the place he can get that.

Nothing's wrong with him and I'm not disappointed in him because I've been an avid hockey fan for 40 years and have seen how most players track.

He's a fine young defenseman with all the right tools to grow into a very solid D.
You're looking for far too much in a young D whose only played about 185 games , nowhere near the 300 or so it takes most young D to get used to the NHL and all the things in their game that have to be learned and honed. It's the hardest position to learn and has a high degree of responsibility.
He's put up 80 points in that time and last year in the playoffs he was outstanding, without what he did and all those GWG, the Kings would have been playing golf far sooner.
I know it's hard to be patient, when as a fan you see the talent and how well a young player can perform. But it takes time to get comfortable in your skates, to get the confidence you need. it's normal for him to have growing pains.
The same pains the TT and TP will have for the next couple of years, for forwards it comes a bit sooner, usually the 3rd year is the breakout.
ANd TT and TP will hit the rookie wall next year, about the 40-50 game mark, just as most do and that's normal.
The Kings were smart to sign Slava and DL is a real student of the game, he studies it , he knows just how good Slava will be.
But you can't lose sight of the fact he's not played in enough games yet to get there.

Perfectly said and a very astute insight as well.

Thanks TG (and mrkolice also) , it could be astute insight or the pain meds for minor surgery Thursday...either way thanks buddy

oh and since you often 'hear' things that we mortal fans don't, this is the 3rd time this week I've read about this player: (the below from a TSn article this morning)
Have you any insight on him?

McKenzie: And there's another free agent we should keep our eye on who most people haven't heard of: a 22-year-old Czech by the name of Jiri Sekac. He went through the NHL Drafts and never got picked up. He was once cut by the Peterborough Petes but he had a strong year in the KHL playing for the Prague team. Right now he has more than a dozen firm offers on a max entry-level deal for two years. He's expected over the next couple of days to make up his mind as to which team. This is a guy who is in great demand. He's a 6'2, 190 pound left winger who many believe is ready to step in NHL-ready.

After all the bad years this franchise has had no need to relax and enjoy the ride when they are in the 2nd cup final in three years. Sometime positives work better than being a Debbie downer at times like these.

He seems to be a split second slow like he's second guessing himself. It's probably a confidence thing. Not too worried, especially since we are 2 wins from the Cup.
