Slaf looks pretty good when he has the puck and you can see why he tantalized scouts. He's really big, he's a strong skater, he has a good shot, and he's a strong passer. But when you see without the puck, you can tell why he didn't light the Finnish league on fire in his draft year. He's just slow to react and always behind the play. The result is he rarely has the puck, so he can't use his good qualities. I've also noticed he relies on his teammates to control the puck in the offensive zone. If he wants to succeed in this league, he'll need to be way more engaged.
Mostly, I wonder how so many scouts thought he was worthy of being first overall. It's not just Montreal who had him at number 1. Lots of pre-draft rankings had him there, or at least in the top three. I looked through some of the pre-draft scouting reports and the negatives people mentioned are turning out to be all the flaws we're seeing on the ice. But somehow his size, speed, and success at the Olympics fooled everyone. As a Habs fan, I want him to turn out well, but I'm not hopeful.
