Post-Game Talk: Skinner with another spectacular Game 4 win

Stu.webp

So I finally got to watching some of the game. Maybe its due to knowing the score in advance but the game has all the drama of Dallas waving a white flag.

I did watch 5mins of the game in real time. before heading out to enjoy the rest of the day. At that moment I saw Harley with the puck at the point and instead of ripping a shot he just dumps it in, Oilers recover puck and get a dangerous rush up ice. I thought at that exact moment that its clear who's going to win. Stars have hardly anybody playing with moxy or purpose. Oilers have plenty of players capable of it.

But we complain a lot about coaching here. I'd have to say its plain nuts what the opponent coachng has yielded this playoffs. the one thing I wouldn't be doing against the Oilers D is dumping the puck in. As long as Dallas have that as a strategy they are dead in the water. They're just handing our D the puck. Haven't finished watching yet but this game felt inevitable. Dallas trying to mount something in 2nd and storming the castle firing toothpicks... About the extent of it. The Oilers yawning throughout the period just letting Dallas punch themselves out. Then Oilers score 4 goals in last 7 sog of the game. Like what?

By my eyes Dallas gave up their game plan in the first minutes of the game. They've been so vanilla and so many players not scoring that they were trying to force offense and getting caught. Thus the 2-0 lead. But that goal at the end of the 2nd with just secs left. What a killer. Go into the third 2-1 is a lot different than 3-1. Oilers didn't ease up the pedal this time I guess.

Dallas are a real weird team though, impossible to figure out. Everytime it seems like they are dead in the water they claw back and do something. Not sure if they will this time. but a lot of guys in Dallas room should be ashamed. Duchene is a disgrace to playoffs. No team should want him after this. No team should ever have wanted Dadonov. Robertson and Hints have been duds. Hintz so bad you would hardly even notice he wasn't playing today. Dallas best line a lot of the time seemed to be 4th line. Didn't it seem like Dallas gave up in this game? Maybe it didn't seem like that in realtime but it did watching it later.

Maybe this is the year the Oil put it together. Their sense of moment is off the charts scoring big goals at exact moments that just kill the opposition. A lot of Killshot moments this playoffs where Oilers are just removing hope of opponents.

Ott really isn't good against the Oilers. We really seem to have his number pretty consistently.

As someone who is a Skinner hater, I think everyone should watch that second period. I think we owe it to him. It's his magnum opus. He was spectacular.

McD, Hyman, and Nuge and many others say hi.

Maybe I don't get it but Stu just doing what a goalie is supposed to do. Make stops against a club that can't score any goals to save their lives. Dallas offense is lost in space.

The impressive thing in these games is the Oilers offense torching OTT everytime out. They're destroying him so far. In a 6-1 game I credit our offense and scoring quite a lot.

That's a crazy minimization of what happened dude.

Hyman, McDavid and Nuge were amazing as well, but we can and should give Stu his flowers for this game.

Was reading the Stars forum and almost caught myself feeling bad for them.

Then I remembered Game 2 vs Dallas in 2003, a 1-6 loss. Game 5 in 2001 when the Oilers had a 3-2 lead but of course the Stars tied it and the Oilers lost in overtime on a Kirk Mueller goal. Modano’s empty-net dagger in Game 6. How hopeless it felt every year having to face a team that just had our number and the best we could hope for was an upset only to get killed in Round 2.

Oilers fans of a certain age hated that team more than any other. Our all-time playoff record vs them is still only 21W 30L. Before the 2024 WCF it was 15W 27L. They killed us in the playoffs more than any other franchise.

Hope they gentleman sweep.

Real curious to see Dallas's response in game 4. It felt like they rolled over after their 2nd period push tonight.

I remember that goal well. Salo kicked out a giant rebound straight to a Stars player with about 5mins left. Those pre-salary cap days really sucked. Those Oilers teams had heart but just not enough talent.

Weird game. Worst played game of the series but the biggest win. Some very opportunistic scoring by some very skilled players.

Skinner was huge in the 2nd. His best game by a mile, which is funny considering the 3 shutouts. But those shutouts the team played pretty close to flawless defensive hockey. Tonight they gave up a whack of good chances against and Skinner made some big saves. He made a handful of saves that he wasn’t making in any of his losses.

We also got lucky with some posts, but you take those when you get em.

Never would have thought I’d say this, but hopefully Brown isn’t too badly hurt because he’s been awesome so far and will be missed if he comes out of the lineup. Although having Skinner and Arvidsson as options to step in is pretty good depth.

But it isn't. Dallas finishing has been bad all playoffs. basically nobody but Rantanen scoring. I don't know that Robertson or Duchene or Johnson could score in an empty net right now. its a rite of Spring for Dallas Stars to suddenly hit an incredible dry patch. They did get 3 posts but their finish is pathetic. Nothing typifies that more than Duchene failing to put the puck in the net when he's behind Skinner and then after that futility the Oilers fly up ice to score.

Dallas "stars" are misnamed. In this series they don't have any.

Our PP needs to wake tf up. I'd seriously consider starting PP2 at some point. Everyone that thought that we were hiding new PP plays can see that clearly is not the case.
Agreed. I think they are in their own heads at this point due to frustration. The Oilers PP goal last night (admittedly close to garbage time goal when Dallas had probably given up) was scored with Kilngberg (G), Draisaitl (A), Kane (A), Kulak and Podkolzin on the ice.

Couple interesting quotes from here:

“We’ve got to just win the next one,” forward Mikko Rantanen said. “That’s the mentality now. Get some rest. Reset. We should have a little bit longer rest since it was afternoon game"

“You’re without your No. 1 center,” DeBoer said. “I give our guys credit. They didn’t mail it in. They showed up and worked.”

Lot of focus there on rest and on just showing up. Dallas went through two seven game series against very good teams just to get here. I wonder if that is starting to catch up to them.

Pin that to the Leafs board. Guy is an Oiler for life. And I thank my lucky 5-14-6-1 every single day.
Good way to ruin a career, go to Toronto. I was listening to a Pod Cast this morning and they are saying Leafs will have 22 mil with Tavares and Marner contracts off books. They are convinced McDavid going there. They were also convinced after 3 year ELC deal but then McDavid signs 8 year deal.

I've said it before but it's worth repeating. How nice is it to have a fresh J Skinner and Arvidsson chomping at the bit to get into games? You have to think they will be extra motivated if Brown is out.
Oiler top 5 in hits per 60 so far:

5) Kasperi Kapanen 18.37 :)
4) Trent Frederic 19.58
3) Zach Hyman 24.93
2) Vasily Podkolzin 24.94

And number 1.....Drum role please....

1) Jeff Skinner 26.78 :naughty:

Small sample size of course. But I suspect he is chomping at the bit to get in on the fun.
