Pretty easy call on this one

Is it?

How can we know until those draft picks are used?

What if they find they find the next Brad Richards or Brayden point in the 3rd round?

What if they find the next Mark Stone in the 6th round?

What if those picks are used to acquire a plzyer at the deadline and that player is a key piece?

We have no way of knowing that SJ won that trade until those draft picks are used.

The truth is Lilly is not good, he hasn't shown a damn thing in about 4 years.

He has a little bit of size but he NEVER uses it.

He did once against Boston in the playoffs, and then 2 of them hit him and then he stopped and has never hit anyone again.

His career high in points is 23 so he doesn't really bring offense.

He's not good defensively.

He doesn't really do anything.

He's the defense version of Josh Levio in that he doesn't score, he doesn't hit, he doesn't fight, he doesn't block shots, he doesn't PK, he's not on the PP he does NOTHING.

Except It's worse with Lilly because Josh Levio didn't make 3 million bucks to do NOTHING.

Lilly does.

I am honestly so pissed at Treliving and Berube and think this one’s gonna look bad as soon as a few weeks from now. Liljegren is either a fantastic bottom pairing guy or adequate top 4 option going by any statistic. Outrageously bad asset management.

I liked Lilly but the guy couldn't win a board battle with a chainsaw and a machete. Exposed regularly on any zone pressure and got caved in sheltered minutes. Terrible puck handling giveaways... in tense moments he has the "yips" with the puck. And you want to promote him to top pair against top competition? Say all you want about coaches he's had, but they are surrounded by intelligent voices all day too. They saw what everyone else did. If he can't handle being "converted to a 2-way 5-6 dman" to earn a spot then he sure as heck can't handle the "#1-2D slot with #1PP time".

Hope the best for Lilly he'll finally get minutes and may prove us doubters fools.
There is no need to lie. The last 2 seasons he caved in other teams 5 on 5. He was the best possession dman we had and one of the best at generating expected and actual goal differentials.

He is a typical example of a player brought over too early, before they develop confidence in their game. It usually has bad effects on their decision making. Still skates well, can hold on to the puck. Can perhaps put things together with the right coaching. I don't think anyone in Sweden understood why he was brought to NA so early.

lmao. I could swear at some point recently, i said Liljegren is the type of player who would make a lot of sense as a "filler" for a team like San Jose.

It's a very reasonable deal. Sharks pay basically nothing but a bit of temporary cap space they have in abundance. Leafs lose a guy that is a bit of an awkward fit like Jokiharju as a "tweener" who plays a Top-4D sort of game, but isn't good enough to actually be a Top-4D.

Expect Liljegren to do well for San Jose and fill the appropriate role as a "filler" as other guys develop. Probably going to see some upsurge in his points in the process. His minus number might take a hit.

He's like the defenceman version of Granlund in a lot of ways. He's sorta built to be a "good play on a bad team".

A deal that fits all sides really. Low risk for the Sharks with a potential decent upside if he thrives in a new environment, Leafs clear cap of a guy who clearly wasn't fitting and pick up a depth D, whilst the player gets a chance to show whether he is good enough.

There is no such thing as a fantastic bottom pairing guy, that's why they are bottom pairing guys.

A fantastic bottom pairing guy would be a top 4 D that plays on the bottom pair because the team he is on is that deep.

That is very, very VERY NOT Lilly

So there's not fantastic back up goalies or 4th liners either?

Generally if you have a fantastic backup that guy is somebody that a lot of people think can be a starter.

Guys like Spencer Knight come to mind or Jermey Swayman before this season, Tukka Rask when he was Tim Thomas Backup or Vasi when he was the Backup Ben Bishop, Hasek when he was Belfour's backup in Chicago or Marty Biron as Ryan Miller's backup, or both Turek and Turco as Belfour's backup in Dallas, Kipper as SJ's #3 I could do this all day.

You know who would be a fantastic 4th liner? Bobby McMann, if the Leafs could add a forward that could bump Bobby McMann to the 4th line they'd be loaded up front because Bobby McMann is significantly better then a 4th liner.

yes there are fantastic backup goalies and 4th liners.

But they are Guys that are in those spots but should be starting goalies but aren't because of who the #1 is or guys that should be higher in the lineup but aren't because they are on incredibly deep teams.

Those arent really the guys we are talking about. Young guys taking the next step is just that. History is riddled with fantastic backups, 4th liners and bottom pairing defensemen who were just that. Either because they just werent suited for bigger roles or because they were specialists or simply older vets settling into being role players. Though cap era has indeed limited this phenomenon somewhat.

Don't act like Liljegren is only 22. He's now 25 and can get in the top 6. Getting anything for him is a huge win for Toronto. That being said, Liljegren could still blossom with more opportunities. It would have NEVER happened in Toronto.

What? He played like 3 or 4 years with the Marlies with our development staff. Not like we brought him and through him on the Leafs.

I really wanted this move. I figured Benning+late 3rd for Liljigren was ideal. Ferraro desperately needs a partner who can move the puck. He can skate, is pure grit, and works his ass off, but dear god he sucks at moving the puck. They should compliment each other really, really nicely. I had hoped we'd get him for less, or a pick would even be thrown the Sharks way as Toronto can better use this cap space. Much like with Walman, I figured the second year would be a problem for most teams- it's a benefit for the sharks who will need a guy like Liljigren next year too. I think Toronto did really well here, getting a 3rd for a guy Berube wasn't going to play, while opening up like $2.8M in cap space (Benning will cost them like $200k agains the cap I think).

Benning's a solid dude- and when healthy- you could do worse as your 6-8 guy. Post hip injury though I'm not sure he'll see much time with the Leafs.

Pretty good upside for the Sharks. Hopefully it'll look like a massive steal when Liljigren gets a bit more trust and opportunity, but I think Toronto did fine. Win-Win with upside for SJ.

Doug Wilson used to do a tremendous job of stealing stars in bad situations. Grier does a tremendous job of stealing depth in bad situations. If Wilson had that skill, I think the Sharks win a cup (unfortunately SJ paid stupid assets for Rivet, Guerin, Bonino, Huskins/Moen, Polak and a bunch of other dumb shit). It'll be interesting to see if Grier can do the reverse and grab the star at a discount when the team is ready to compete.

The doghouse
Leafs sold low but I don’t just don’t think he’s a good player. So I think it was a good move to clear him out and give him a chance elsewhere

Every fan would love a team to trade their only good D for nothing. I don't think it has ever happened before. It is almost always a struggling D whk might still have potential that get traded, like this trade.
